Sony Q3 FY15 Results - Beats Market Expectations & 6.4 Million Shipped PS4's

Sony needs to get out of the smartphone business, they can't compete. Too expensive on the low end and no carrier presence, standout OS/ecosystem, hardware at the top end. Just look at the ad money Samsung is throwing at the Galaxy line and they are still seeing shrinking market share.

Sony should stick to making components and let the other Android OEMs battle it out.

PS4 almost 20m shipped is impressive. Only slightly behind Wii launch aligned.

Nice to see decent profit too. I hope Sony can continue to turn things around.

Nice PS4 numbers, mobile numbers hurt though, the latest Xperia iterations have been excellent in format, design and performance :(

They are doing "something". At Q2 (see my previous post) they writed down 1,59 billion usd from mobile department. And at Q3 they made small proftit in mobile dep. They have started restructuring of Mobile Division.

Did you see this?

The Verge 4.2.2015 said:
The Xperia smartphone business continues to struggle; Sony is laying off 2,100 workers by March 2016 having previously announced 1,000 cuts, meaning the division will shrink by around 30 percent in total. Sales were actually up slightly year-on-year with a small operating profit, but new mobile chief Hiroki Totoki is implementing a restructuring plan designed to streamline the company's smartphone strategy.

It´s quite interesting to see that Sonys Game&Network division ended up with an Q3 operating income similar to Nintendos (26b yen compared to 20b yen).

Honestly, we do need to see if Sony are able to maintain their current sell-through rate. 1.5 million isn't a big deal if they can continue their 1 mil a month rate, but if not, then there's reason to be concerned.

They are selling and doubt there is even any hint of concern that it would be otherwise.

Having an excess of over a million consoles when it sells a million a month average is hardly "channel stuffing"

Really great results for PlayStation division, even with that Vita write-off. Hopefully mobile division will survive in some form, Z3 line is currently IMO pinnacle of Android.

We still don't know if Sony will launch PS4 in China this quarter?

Vita actually sold more in the US in December than it did in Japan.

Also, Vita isn't close to competing with 3DS in Japan or doing well at all. Vita hardware is still struggling to outsell Sega Saturn, and software sales aren't that great for it nor are they likely for the rest of the year since most games are small niche visual novels.

At the least, it will probably end up being the best selling "Failed" platform to date.

Vita number is also better than I expected, honestly. Pretty comparable to WiiU except vita shipped more in previous quarters I believe

By now I wouldn't be surprised if it's 20 million sold to consumers, as the earnings ended dec 31st.

1.5 million over the past month doesn't sound too likely to me. Maybe if it had the China launch it would have gotten close but I don't expect 20 million until well into Feb.

Click for interactive chart.

Wii q4 2007: 6.96m / 20.13m
PS4 q4 2014: 6.40m / 19.90m

They are the undisputed leader, on the biggest quarter, with great sales and PS+ subscriptions.
And the income is only ¥53.7 billion yen?
I was expecting better, something like Wii-numbers...

There are no "Wii-numbers". There are "Wii+DS-numbers". =P

Sony's "DS" is having the opposite effect:

11.2 billion yen (93 million U.S. dollars) write-down of PS Vita and PS TV components. This write-down was recorded because the latest forecast of PS TV unit sales does not reach our original for ecast as a result of lower than expected unit sales in the current quarter.

I really don't see their TV division doing any better. LG, Samsung and other big brands who are doing well have taken Sony's pie, and their name is so synonymous with stupidly high pricing that no one wants to buy one. They can't go lower because that market is already swallowed up by in-store brand names.
I have heard it everytime on Sony TV hating, but people still buy one, so it can't be no one.

I expected good Q3 results given the holidays.

Wonder where they'll end up full year though. Nintendo and Sony seem to be doing good though.

PS2 wasn't available in over 30 markets for a year.

True. PS2 NA launch was 8 months after JP launch, EU was 9.

Also worth noting that PS1 launched in the west almost one year after Japanese launch.

PS1/PS2 initial sales appears weak because of that.

why don't they just fucking axe their mobile division
I dont think they're going to do that, the potential for the division to earn money is there and the Z series has been a big success while their low-budget phones and mid-range has been bleeding money.
When you buy a Sony phone you are more often than not looking for the best and that is the z-series.
Going forward they will probably start selling less low-mid and more high-end.
Based on rumors and chatter from the hq in Sweden it seems like they axed their strategy of 2 flagships per year and therefore axed one of the Z phones which means the 'z4' will be as high-end as you can reach.

I am talking about worldwide, where Sony dominates. 1.5 million in a month is possible.

As if that those people who responded to you entertained the distant thought of Sony selling that many units in the US in one of the slowest months of the year...
They were obviously objecting to the possibility of Sony reaching that goal through worldwide sales, a stance that is anything but illogical. The PS4 figure should be a little over 19 million right now...

I hope they don't. I like their mobiles, shame they always seem a bit behind in releases.

Would these figures include sale of SOE?

No. This thread is for sales until Dec. 31, 2014. SOE was sold in 2015.

I am talking about worldwide, where Sony dominates. 1.5 million in a month is possible.

Sony expects to ship only 2.4 million home consoles until March 31st. Even if the PS3 number is zero and PS4 outperforms and ships 3 million, the monthly number would be 1 million.

1.5 million a month is pretty much impossible for the PS4 in the first quarter of 2015.

Contrary to expectations, looking at this numbers I believe 360 is outselling PS3 worldwide and consolidating 2nd place for 7th generation.

If not, Xbox One is doing better than people estimate here.

The failure of both PSVita and Sony's smartphones are a reminder that quality is not what matters most when it comes to sell.

This gen are more upfront, because it was very late jump from last gen to next gen, and more countries available on it first year.
People more hungry for new tech ever.

Yeah.

XBO until Mar. 2014: 5.1 million.
XBO+360 from Apr. to Dec: 2014: 10.1 million

PS3 from Apr. to Dec: 2014: 2.7 million.

If 360 = PS3, XBO = 12.5 million.
If 360 < PS3, XBO > 12.5 million.

Thus, I put the max in my chart at 13 million.

Wouldn't wonder me, PS3 sales tanked pretty hard.
