God Eater 2: Rage Burst demo slated for early Feb. 2015 (JP obviously)

as expected, graphics are just up-res version of Vita. They didn't put extra touch like how KT is doing with Toukiden which is shame.

The game feels like 30fps, which is somewhat disappointing. Nothing here is pushing the hardware. Still getting used to playing with a controller.

You can change the size of the damage numbers or off completely. I have mine setup mmo style, huge. Gonna make testing setups so much easier.

As for graphics I hope they could bother to do some extra tweaks, but I'm not so sure about the fps.
The thing is they sure could go for 60fps for PS4 version but that would dis-enable cross-play between PS4 and Vita. (Actually Bamco dared to apply disparity for Gundam Breaker 2 between PS3 and Vita versions, that PS3 version runs smoother but ppl can no longer do cross-play, that they could do for OG Gundam Breaker).

As for Gundam Breaker 2 both PS3 and Vita have healthy install base in Japan so they could live without cross-play, but as for PS4's GE2RB if cross-play is disabled PS4 players will have extreme difficulty to find buddies to play with :p

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
just because it is on a ps4 does not magically make a game 60fps.

do keep that in mind.

Here's my photo of the black bars:

My current screen size is "dot by dot". I can change it to full and the bars get a bit smaller, but they're still pretty big.

Looks like I'll replay from the beginning, no way to transfer saves data for people who played on their US or EU account.

And I don't have any black bars.

Edit : My new char.

Edit 2 : Holy shit, there's a female MC version of the OP

The game or the demo? Because Rage Burst got trademarked: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=977204

Oh wow nice! Didn't see this somehow. Awesome! Looking likely we'll get it then :D

Question is PS4 or Vita... (or cross buy if they wanna be awesome). From these black bars looking like it'll be Vita for me based off this. If vita version doesn't have online though and/or black bars are removed through remote play, PS4 version it's looking like.

PS4/Vita cross ports are annoying me because of this. A lot of these games I'd rather play on Vita, but with a PS4 version which would (or should) benefit from higher res and possibly fps, I can't logically turn that down. Why doesn't anyone other than Sony use cross buy? It sucks massively.

I have no black borders either. Guys have you set the display area in the ps4 settings?

I had the same problem with Dust on ps4, you have to enlarge the display area so it fits your display.

Taking a look at the original GE2 and the Rage Burst preorder, the file sizes are 3345 and 3313. Wonder how they managed to shave off 32MB while adding what's pretty much a whole second quest with new movies, voice acting, animated cutscenes, Aragami, and content in general. It's pretty impressive.

You mean in the main ps4 settings? I didn't even know there's something like that, all games so far have been fullscreen for me.

Edit:
Okay, changing that setting fixed it for me. Thanks!

Oh, that fixed it. Really strange, that's the first time I have ever had to mess with the video settings like that. Thanks, I am interested in this game again!

I wasn't actually serious about ignoring the game just because it had black bars.

From gamefaqs:
Some of the newer HDTVs have the option to enable 1:1 pixel mapping. Meaning for this type of TVs, you set the display size to max.

The reason why the PS4 has the display size setting is so that users of TVs which do not have 1:1 pixel mapping will be able to adjust the screen size to counteract the overscan default the TV is set to.
That would make sense.

Anyone get far enough to see if they let you try any of the new skill stuff, like the golden hyper mode? It's cool they have both male and female versions of the opening, depending on your created character.

Yeah, you can use Blood Rage, check out the first two demo-exclusive missions to do it asap.

Is this better than Freedom Wars? (the original GE2 I mean).

short answer yes.

long answer yes.

game plays differently of course but design and gameplay wise its better.

plus no irritating forced stealth or overly long pointless wandering in between missions.

watch gameplay vids or try the demo to see if you like it. fastest way really.

huh, so this is not full 1080p on PS4?

how is the framerate?

I played like 2 hours not knowing what i'm doing but it seemed pretty consistent

during loading screens there would be this weird jitter for some reason, not like that makes a difference or anything lol

I'm enjoying what I'm playing so far. I have absolutely no clue what is going on, but poking my way around I'm learning where the various stuff is. I'm not noticing black bars on my screen personally. Are they top/bottom?

I notice them in the screenshots of course but not when im playing. I mean .... there is no space missing top to bottom but I THINK there might be like a centimeter off the left and right, nothing like the screens though
Look at photos in this thread. Basically, if you have an older tv or messed up with display settings for the PS4, you won't see any borders.

At work and can't really watch any videos right now. Could someone give me a gist on what the general gameplay is like?

For reference, I loved Freedom Wars, like Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star and was fairly apathetic towards Toukiden.

I have a 40 inch Samsung 120hz SMART LED. Only about 16 months old.

Heres what it looks like on my TV. There is like a little sliver on the left and right taken off, but the bottom and top are fine. Everything is just set to 1080p on my TV and display settings.

Edit: augh, f'in phone screenshots lol, hold on gotta rotate it

There, rotated it. Not nearly as bad as the screenshots

Well, looks okay. You can double check your screen size on your TV and display size in PS4 settings if you want to be sure.
The problem only appears on TVs with dot to dot display and default ps4 display size settings it seems.

If anyone's interested, here's my archived 2 hour long demo stream from yesterday - http://www.twitch.tv/hasemo/b/620736979

Hope this doesn't take forever to get localized. Also I don't have the black bars either, but I think I prefer to play this on the Vita. Gotta show the Vita some love.

Well, yeah, that's why a lot of games allow you to set display area/brightness calibration/etc in settings, so games aren't accidentally drawing UI elements outside viewable area on problematic displays.

Quite a lot actually. 3 ranks of both free and normal missions (quite a lot missions per rank), special demo missions and 2 special missions which appear randomly.

I think it has to do with the Display Area Settings option on the PS4 settings. I remember when I first set to 1080p and went into there the white arrows were pretty far out from the edges of my screen. Now they are touching the edges which has shrunk the black bars. So yeh its just the display area setting on the PS4 that needs to be adjusted if you actually do see black bars during gameplay

I can usually brute-force my way through Japanese demos, but this is too much for me. It looks great, plays great, sounds great. I can't wait to get my hands on the real deal!

Anyone that also played the first game? How much they improved from that?

The first game as in God Eater, or God Eater Burst?

GE2 alone was already a massive improvement in virtually every way.

For reference, I loved Freedom Wars, like Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star and was fairly apathetic towards Toukiden.

It's a fast-paced multi-dimensional hunting game. I say multi-dimensional because you always have two weapons - the "blade" (and pole types) and guns. Of course, you can completely ignore the gun and just use melee. The reverse is not as simple aside from the Assault type guns.

Main features:

1. Bullet Edit (create your own bullet) is a trademark of the game. I'm going to check later what has changed for RB. Hopefully, they didn't left these babies out. >__>

2. Also, since the introduction of Blood Arts, THE best addition to GE2 (and still is for Rage Burst), it's one of those few games with a more "personalized" fighting style as Blood Arts can simple strengthen, expand or even supplement a weapon's moveset into many ways to fight.

I tested Charge Spear's new BA in RB so far, and I liked what I saw. :)

3. Reliable AI companions

They're designed for high survivability (by default at least) instead of damage. A single NPC can hold of 3 large aragami at the same time and survive well while you finish a lone Aragami on the other side of the map. I've done that a number of times, and the other NPC was shieldless!

They are also very useful for some strategies as you can issues certain commands to them. They also do quite well for supporting the PC.

Anyone that also played the first game? How much they improved from that?

You should still play GEB. Its story is far better than GE2's main chapter.

As for gameplay? Blood Arts is awesome.

The weapons (both melee and ranged) have been somewhat refocused and specialized.

Any of them really, I played Burst but I know how stuff was with the original version too.

But good to know, I didn't keep up with news for GE2, so I had no idea of the upgrades.

Oh, I'm playing GEB, it's pretty fun, it was mostly on the gameplay stuff that I was asking about.

Thanks for telling me, I'll start to keep an eye out for this too.

I posted a youtube video with some gameplay footage if anyone wants to take a look at the PS4 version. Non tutorial/character creator stuff starts around the 8 minute mark. Disclaimer: I've never really played any of the previous games in the series, and don't speak Japanese, so any horrible play or misquoted info can be attributed that :)

As much as I think the presentation of the Blood Rage mode is awesome (cool wings and bgm), ui for entering it is atrocious.
I can't decide if having to use the touchpad on the vita, or fiddling with normal controls which prevents you from moving on the ps4 is worse. I really can't imagine using it in high rank missions, since those can get really hectic.

Except for the part where it enables you to do triple damage... (multipliers stack). Anyway for those who want to get around the demos high rank weapon limitation, just change the color of the sword/shield/gun and it auto equips. Have fun wrecking everything.

I finally got to test all Blood Arts. Some 8 hours on Vita.

1. Blood Rage first impressions
  • :/
  • ...
  • -___-
  • You are invincible while selecting your oaths (can be turned off).
  • You are invincible to attacks while under Blood Rage. "Almost all attacks" according to official website.
  • There's a timer after you finish selecting your oaths. Can be put to "fast" or "no timer".
  • You can select no oaths and go Blood Rage directly.
  • You can automate selecting some oaths.
  • You can't use Blood Rage without a big aragami present in the field.
  • Your blood rage meter can be brought to the succeeding missions!
  • Activating it once costs "100%".
  • You can save up to 400% Syncro Rate but you will turn into an Evangelion.
  • It has a really cool activation animation.

I honestly hope that they don't balance stuff around this thing. It seems like Easy Modo. I generally suck at action games, and GE is the one action game that I try to improve my gameplay (for that SSS or Solo SSS, and Perfect Solo if I am brave enough lol). But this seems like somewhat against it. (That's... 4x 30s? of Damage boost + invincibility). Partial spoilers?
On the other hand, one of the help tips mentioned that it's only usable by the player due to her Blood Ability. So I guess this is easily removable for the next installment.

I'll definitely try not to use it.

Protip (esp. at early game):
Make sure you are at full OP when you start Blood Rage. The bursty the bullet, the better. (I guess that means stacking up Aragami Bullets will also do a lot)

2. Holy crap, that Skill Install thing at the end of each mission is goddamn annoying.
CAN THEY JUST BE TREATED AS NORMAL ITEMS AND DON'T DISPLAY THEM ONE BY ONE?!?!?!

3. Special Missions

These missions (IIRC) pop up randomly after you finish a mission. And they're a "take-it-or-nothing". (disappeared when I went to another mission).

As far as the demo goes, it seems to be the same two mission and even marks it if you've already finished it. I hope it's the same in the main game that it isn't randomized. :/

4. Blood Arts

Honestly, this is THE single best thing about GE2, and still is.

I likethe new moves for Charge Spear and Boost Hammer. It seems like my main weapon of choice will remain with them.

However, the new elemental variants of certain Blood Arts are... kinda boring. I mean, some of them already had two other variants - the "normal" version and the weakpoint variant.

5. Elemental Mechanic

There's an overhaul on how element works. There was indeed a need for a change due to how weapons with no elements become the best choice when it comes to skills like 剣の達人 and weakpoint-based Blood Arts (requires white effect).

Damage effects: White > Red > Green > Sparks (least damage)

Both of these guys are from the same mission. Rank 3 special mission.

Attack: Charge Spear (Triangle)
Element: Thunder

Ukonbasara Face Damage: 19
Ukonbasara Face Effect: Red
Shiyuu Leg Damage: 27~29
Shiyuu Leg Effect: Sparks

Shiyuu Head Damage: 270 (Mid-Air Square)

Attack: Rank 6 Kurogane Sniper* against Ukon

Thunder: 15~25 per hit
No Element: 150~250++ per hit

This elemental change bodes questions about many other stuff. For one, what happens to multi-element weapons. And for another example, there's the 弾丸 vs レーザー. Laser gave more elemental damage and less piercing while dangan was its counterpart. As a quick test, I went to Bullet Edit, used "Base Sniper" option and had a bullet with Sniper Bullet -> 弾丸(extremely short range) and another one for レーザー. They seem to do the same damage (130) on top of the first strike.

*If you wanna know how I managed to equip a Rank 6 Sniper, I transferred my GE2 save. Then in the equip select screen, if you CHOOSE THE COLOR of the weapon, it'll automatically be equipped - bypassing the Rank requirement.

Now, this is where it gets interesting:

Equipping an Ilmatar (Rank 6 Tower Shield from Ukon), Vajra could barely damage me. And that's not an exaggeration, despite the fact that I am using a Rank 6 Tower against a Rank 3 High Difficulty mission (Wild Carrier; one with bunch of Ogretail + Ogretail Daten then Vajra pops up alone after the first wave). I didn't even notice it until I went alone and spammed BA on Ogretail - I was almost killed by them while Vajra could not. All of his attacks including those that don't seem to have element are resisted.

The Ogretail and Ogretail Daten are also from the same mission as Vajra. High difficulty Rank 3.

Spike Projectile 7 damage
"Side" Spike Projectile 7 damage
Jumping Tackle 6 damage
Spin 8 damage ~(12 damage?)

No Anger
Vajra Dash - 1 (!!!)
Vajra 5-ball thunder shot - 1 (!!!) per shot
Vajra Thunder Discharge - 1 (!!!)
Vajra Single Thunder Shot - 1~2

Angered
Vajra Thunder Discharge - 1
Vajra Thunder Shot - 1

For stats comparison between GE2 and GE2RB demo:
GE2: 803 Base DEF, 734 Thunder, 515 Others.
RBD: 492 Base DEF, ◎◎ Thunder, - Others.

I went ahead and looked for an shield that has similar performance but different elemental attributes:
猿甲タンケイ+2
509 Base Def, ◎ Ice, X Others.

Vajra Dash - 13
Vajra Thunder Field (the long range one) - 18
Vajra Thunder Discharge - 18

Vajra Aragami Bullet (sniper) was effective against Vajra. Same with Unko. No damage reduction or increase.

Now, I think this is crap for due to certain things:
1. For people like me who want the damage numbers turned off, it is now misleading to see a Red/White effect when you're actually doing shit damage.
2. You essentially become useless against those resisting your element. (Reduced to 10% seemed to be the magic number against Ukon and Vajra.)
3. Some visual effects (like the Vajra bullet above) are now disconnected with their actual damage.
4. You can turn Aragami into a joke. (LOL, 1 damage Vajra)

Honestly, I wish they just fixed the requirement and calculation for getting a white effect (Critical) instead of this. This change fixed some things but also broke lots of things. :/

tl;dr:
1. Damage effect is now irregardless of damage done.
2. 100% of your attack damage is now affected by the element instead of separate calculations for the physical attributes and the elemental attributes.

P.S. I LOL'd on the Brimstone (Alisa's Buckler) - it's Skill is
ザ 優等生
. Similarly, skill name of certain weapons now references its user. All(?) of them have same description (特別な思い...).

I'm still with #TeamNoDamageNumbers

They're awesome for determining with damage calculations, though.

speaking of the OT gonna make it pretty simple that and there isnt that much resources to use anyways. So am thinking mostly text and such, with whatever trailers there are available.

Oh, I didn't know that you're invincible while choosing oaths for Blood Rahe, good to know.
Also thanks for the tip about changing colors of weapons to equip stuff you shouldn't have access to - I don't care about it in the demo, since I already cleared all the missions there, but for the full version. I hope that it won't be fixed, since it's obviously an oversight on their part.

Edit:
Sigh, it seems that changing the Display Size Settings of the PS4 affects more games than just GERB - I've tried playing FFXIV and the game screen size was bigger than the TV. If Bamco doesn't change how it works in the full version, I'll have to change the setting between different games. :|

And this is why I will always be in favor of seeing my damage. No wasting time using skills/weapons that have no effect. I once spent 45min trying to kill a フルフル with a LBG and had no idea how close to death it was. Also the change to the MH skill system is much better. Being able to add +whatever and tally them up to a full skill is much better than having to use a weapon with x skill to get the effect.
