Unreal Engine 4 Kite Open World Cinematic

Of course not. But do we have enough fidelity to try it?
Frozen is probably a decade away for games tech, but the original Toy Story should be within reach right?

Yeah, definitely. There are more CG that did not use very advanced physics that could be 'replicated' with this tech.

Waiting for the news that it was running on SLI nVidia Titan X.

Considering how UE4 does not support SLI... I would imagine it is using a single card.

BTW, the distance field AO, GI along with the ray traced shadows are just great.

I really would also like to learn more about the Bokeh and motionblur used.

These are the types of next generation experiences we should be getting right now. But no, everyone wants to be cheap and safe and be fine with 10 year old graphic effects and sub 1080p and shit LOD and IQ.

Fuck this.

The GPU this is running on is probably more than 8TF with 2-3x more bandwidth than the next gen consoles (on top of having better compression). Along with a CPU which is an order of magnitude more powerful than those found in the PS4 and xb1.

It would mean devs have to target a completely different set of hardware for that situation you want to be true. Something that just cannot happen for most games. Likewise, this demo will not scale as well as other UE4 demos. Almost nothing (which for UE standards is completely rare) is being pre-rendered beyond the animation playback for the character and kite. It is one of the reasons why it looks the way it does... it is using some rather expensive base techniques to achieve its look.

What the fuck...

You wont see anything close to this on consoles. Hell you probably wont see it on PC for quite a while.

Is that true? If so, holy shit. Talk about a kick in the nuts.

I was disappointed to see that the boy didn't walk across the water to show off any water effects, but then the ending got to me. Smart, Epic.

Does that surprise you? This should be the baseline for PS5 open world games, IMO.

Vied for a tag related to cocks, so here it is.
I watched it and thought it was lovely, shouldn't have read the thread afterwards jesus you cynical bastards. It was a nice looking short, and it was a nice short! They're making a bloody game on it.

Am I the only one who thought that boy looked kinda out of place? He looks too cartoonish for these environments; One take you see his lego looking hair, the next you see super detailed, realistic looking rocks.

This can't be serious.

It works if you force it, but you get graphical artifacts.

I see.

You think these issues will be resolved with DX12 and SFR SLI?
I mean for such a big engine to not have SLI support at all would be huge downer for me. Definitely will make me sell my cards if that's the case.

Looking at games like Ryse, The Order and Driveclub, I'm actually pretty happy that developers are working out how to get the most out of 'low powered' boxes. It means that when we do eventually get to Titan X levels of power in consoles or more mainstream PCs, you'll get things that look even better than that demo - because as good as it looks, it'll be brute forcing a ton of stuff.

Do you think AAA games would be any less broken at launch? Any less money grubbing for DLC(especially with this kind of fidelity you apparently want them to strive toward?) Any less a victim of the broken industry we find ourselves in specifically because of that large scale production push we already went through and crashed?

Having power like this in the mainstream marketplace will be an inevitability.

But for right now, its hardly necessary, and more importantly, hardly sustainable.

I did notice his hair. It was very video gamey :(

I always say that the worst part of Unreal Engine is the character models... and this didn't help change my mind.

Huh? It looks better than Monster House.

Dat CGI pre-rendering quality.

Looked really good but I wonder if it ran on just 1 of those Titan X's and normal high-grade hardware. Wonder if the landscape was generated procedurally.

You should watch the presentation. Yes parts of the landscape are generated procedurally.

Well, one could try it out with UE4 and Flex..
It is similar enough to how the snow was simulated and seems to be very efficient. (*Wink* to nvidia demo team.)

So can we assume that the next generation of consoles might be able to pull of something reasonably close to this? Or is this level of power at least two generations away from the mainstream?

Amazing!

We could still get nitpicky here, hair will always be a problem, and animations? well he runs like a girl =p

Fuck this.

It runs on that new titan gpu apparently.
There is a bigger performance gap between that titan X and the xbox one than there is between the xbox one and the xbox 360

It's like asking why you can't get games that look like ryse on the xbox 360, you can't because the hardware is a full generation behind.

Give it a year and the gtx 1080 or w/e titan equivalent is out, then another 3 years for that to be the 150 euro lower-midrange average gpu in people's computer, and then you'll see this in games on PC.
If you want this on your xbox you're going to have to wait for the next xbox to come out

Next consoles will be able to achieve this.

I appreciate the demo not being about space marines, but it's _quite_ schmaltzy...

Techwise it looks very fine. Wonder why they chose to go with modeled plastic hair instead of a hair sim though.

Performance... They did want this to be a real time demo after all.

Getting picky with it is everyone's duty.

I'm quite bothered and surprised by all the pop-in. There's also a number of things I don't like about the art direction but that's beside the topic, here.

Not too impressive. Molded hair, the part where he jumps across the rocks and you can see his reflection in the distant water? bleh. There are current gen CONSOLE games that look WAY better than this tech demo, minus image quality considerations of course.

This is more of a LOD tech demo, if real time.

This demo won't get released wholly in the marketplace cus no one can run it. It will get released in chunks and each chunk will have assets of the demo.

wait - so would that be controllable gameplay or just another BS cinematic?

Think of it as a benchmark like Fire Strike. It's a completely scripted sequence being rendered in real-time. I'd be shocked if they had any of that setup for gameplay (like running around\jumping with the kid).

Lol the demo was just a realtime VIDEO running on the GTX Titan X. To run it in gameplay ingame modus, you will probablmy need quad GTX 1000-1100 New Pascal Cards with a pile of DDR4 and a IBM Power9 CPU! The demo won't even get released like you saw it, but in assets' chunks.

What resolution was this running at originally?

1080p

They actually allow You to fly or walk in that environment, in their booth.
Its fully explore-able 100 square miles.

why does it matter then considering we've seen similar tech years ago (look at toy story). If I can't control the character, I'm passing.

This is running using a game engine and not just 3d/animation tools for movies ! So basically if you get the adequate hardware to run it (like in 4-5 years) you could play it like a game !

If your objective is to show illogical console love : achievement unlock.

And the game you think about is ultra short scoped with half baked stuff and do nothing spectacular technically you can't find in others games (except it do with lot of attention due to the scope and the budget). This is what i call an not so impressive stuff on a tech side.
It sure is a good PR move to sell overrated power to the not so knowledgeable but dedicated community
