Credits to TheNAC for posting it in the other firmware thread.

Not sure if this is only backup of data to an external HDD or if it also allows playing the games off it.

Thuway also mentions Auto sync trophies in another tweet.

Whatever is good for Nintendo and Microsoft has to be good for Sony as well.

This firmware update is shaping up to be one of the best ever....If it doesn't break things.

Isn't that just for restoring your system once you've upgraded your hard drive, and not actually playing games off of?

That looks like a back up utility and not what the WiiU and Xbone offer as external harddisk support.

It allows to relatively painless upgrade the internal harddisk and not have to redownload all the shit you have, but not extend the harddisk space by using two harddisks.

Or sticking your digital games on so you don't have to re-download. Swapping them back into the internal would be a lot faster than downloading again.

Even if you can't play off the external, that is good news.

So there is a possibility that PS4 owners will finally be able to add storage to their console?

That is awesome! Best 8th gen feature to date.

You have always been able to add a bigger internal HDD on PS4. This is external support on top of that.

No. This does not look like you can add storage. You can replace the storage with something bigger (which you could always do on PS3 and PS4) but now you can also restore the previous data without redownloading it again. The latter part lacked on PS4.

Yeah, that's what it looks like. A hard drive extension would be nice to have on PS4 as well.

Actually that doesn't look like external HDD support, not in the way it's meant on Xbox One, at least. Looks like it's just for backup/restore of game installs and data.

Edit: aaaaaand beaten.

No. On a PS4 you can replace storage, but you cannot add storage. If I buy a 2 TB HDD and use it with a PS4 instead of the competition, I am getting a lower value out of it because I am only adding 1.5 TB of storage, not 2 TB.

Oh, well that kinda stinks. I was really hoping that the PS4 would finally have what One and U owners have.

Logic how does it work.

Sounds like there maybe a redesigned slim model incoming? - this would make it easier to swap models as well has internal hard drives.

That's a weird way to look at it.

By that reasoning, if I were to buy a 2TB internal HDD, then I would get an extra 1.5TB on PS4, but a lower value of 0TB extra on the competition.

Absolutely nothing shown even hints to the PS4 being able to use an external HDD as a storage option. It's finally getting what the PS3 has.

I can't even...

Maybe that's why we have beta tester for this update. Seems big enough for Sony to warrant extensive QA.

Having external HDD support is probably a less essential feature when you have the ability to upgrade the actual system HDD. Probably less of an issue still when you don't have a PS4 I can only imagine.

You are adding 1.5TB of storage.

Thread name is bit misleading. Someone could start believing that games can be played off the external drive.

This is only game backups.

I hope a mod will update the thread title. This looks like it will be for backups only - still an essential feature, none the less.

I say as much in the OP :)

If a mod feels the thread title should be updated to say "external HDD backup" then please do.

To be fair to thuway, I didn't credit him at all before, because I hadn't realised the source was his twitter.

Gotcha. I appreciate you making the topic. I was on phone at work and my work blocks gaf so I just did a quick type up in the other thread.
