Rare to announce new game at E3

So most likely a new IP, but Kamp(if we still believe) was dead set and pushing Banjo.. idk..
I'd buy an Xbox One for a Nuts and Bolts sequel, but we're gonna get some Battletoads thing instead.

Battletoads will be a small game, I don't see how you make it into a big budget AAA game.

Who would buy a banjo game on the xbone? That IP is a miscast for the gears/halo audience and they already tried with the last banjo game. Its either battletoads or new IP.

People didn't buy the last Banj game because it WASN'T a normal Banjo game. Yooka-Laylee got 1M$ in 40 minutes, so obviously there's a lot of people who want Banjo-Threeie. With that said, Battletoads is coming, but it's not the big new AAA game from Rare. A tiny chance it's Banjo, but more likely a new IP.

God I hope your wrong, Rare needs to prove it can deliver its classics updated for today's audience. Also as it is the 30th Anniversary of Rare a nice heartfelt project to show its fans they know they still have the chops, redo the asserts for BK + BT and reuse them in a Banjo-Threeie.

New IP doesn't make much sense as they haven't used Rare's Library of IP.

They can do new IP and use their older IPs in a way that are actually sustainable for them to keep making them.

A new, retail Banjo game would not be commercially viable. If they do anything at all with the IP I think it will be a remaster or a downloadable title. Or maybe something with Project Spark like they did for Conker.

A new Banjo would be more viable than something like Sunset Overdrive.

Banjo-Kazooie sold more than 2.2 million and Banjo Tooie sold 3 million. A proper Banjo Threeie could pull substantial numbers.

Those games were nearly 20 years ago, in a very different environment. It would be a lot to expect multi-million sales from a new game in the series.

I think you would be hard-pressed to think of the last fully-priced 3D platformer than performed really well commercially without Mario/Sonic. Hell even the performance of Sonic games varies pretty widely.

Ratchet/Sly/Jak and Daxter ... but Microsoft would have to market it ...

Those games at least had the advantage of having art design and gameplay that was intended to appeal to a slightly older audience teen audience, whereas with Banjo they are pretty much stuck with a doofy cartoon bear and squawking bird. Unless you really want a gritty reboot :)

Microsoft got burned pretty hard on Viva Pinata, and I think the lesson they took away was that it's a bad idea to launch family-friendly IPs on a young game system whose early adopters are teens, college kids, twentysomethings, etc.

Part of the problem with the IP is that it doesn't have much relevance at all to children, who are already stuck on Skylanders, Minecraft, Disney Inifinity, iOS, etc. So you're stuck making this kid-centric game for the narrow audience of adults that value nostalgia.

Twisted Pixel probably doing Battletoads game. Rare doing some AAA budget game.

Ratchet/Sly/Jak and Daxter ... but Microsoft would have to market it ...

Those games, while technically the same genre, were a lot more focused on the combat, at least in the case of Jak/Ratchet (i've never played Sly). They were 3d platformers but also much more focused on the weaponry and combat.

That would require them to actually make retail games though using that IP which they can't/won't.

Why retail? As I've said they're using Unity for at least one thing possibly more, would make much more sense to use that for projects smaller in scope, downloadable games than it would be to use all those IPs in AAA retail games.

I largely think except for probably Perfect Dark and Kameo a lot of their games wouldn't do so well in that retail space and they could, should and seemingly are exploring other avenues for these things.

There are multiple ways to deliver a game to your user base these days, retail is only one of them.

Banjo-Kazooie sold more than 2.2 million and Banjo Tooie sold 3 million. A proper Banjo Threeie could pull substantial numbers.

They did that over 10 years ago on a completely different platform set. I really do not see either of the claims of substantial numbers or more viable than something like SO being true.

Simon Woodroffe is the creative director, the studio head is Craig Duncan, they worked together at Midway

Thanks for the correction. : )

Reading Woodroffe's twitter it seems there are multiple projects, which is consistent with Harrison saying there were multiple projects at Rare last year. That's great, I liked it when they had multiple teams and were able to release a game or two a year, so hopefully they can get that groove back.

I previously missed Woodroffe's tweet that Rare is about doing new things, but to me it doesn't necessarily mean new IP only. He said something similar back in mid-2013, where he explained it was about delivering new experiences, even creating new genres, by leveraging technology in creative ways. He also mentioned they had ideas for using classic IP such as Banjo, Perfect Dark, VP, etc. to deliver those experiences.

Reflecting on Kinect Sports Rivals, which came out about 9 months after Woodroffe made that comment, it wasn't that far removed from earlier Kinect Sports titles. It had some new events, but the biggest change was the presentation and the way it used Live to foster competition.

I strongly believe Banjo is on the way, but it won't be purely classic Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie or a straight sequel to Nuts & Bolts 2. I'm cool with Rare trying new things with Banjo as long as it pays respect to its heritage and it's a full, extremely well executed game.

I and many others would. I had an n64 because of rare and I got an Xbox 360 on launch (picked up kameo) because of them too.

Nuts and bolts was not good for banjo though. I wanted to go on adventure with banjo and kazooie but instead I had to create vehicles and then see how good they drove.

Xbox doesn't need to be just a shooter box. I thought they'd want all types of games. If it is so set on being a shooter box though I wouldn't mind seeing a new jet force Gemini or perfect dark though, but change perfect dark to third person so we can see Joanna rather than it being another fps.

C'mon guys, it's obviously not a Kinect game!

Chances of being a game for hololens however, can be high.

Just no! I'll sell my shirt if it's a HoloLens title. When asked if it's a Kinect title, Woodroffe only answered "No...". Don't you think that part of the reason there's a lot of press about Rare getting back to making AAA non-Kinect Rare games is because they want to win back the gamers? Not that he's messiah, but Phil Spencer is at the helm now, and I think he understands that Xbox needs the goodwill of the gamers. That's why Sony's ahead, and they're behind.

I am not an expert, but I doubt HoloLens can match current-gen consoles in the performance department. It also has an install base of zero. At best, there will be a Battletoads port to it or something.

I would like Perfect Dark to be a mas up of Mirror's Edge and Deus Ex. Just think a darker Mirror's Edge where the goal is to infiltrate, rather than run all the time, and you have gadgets, rappelling gear and such. Instead of just being an FPS, it would be a way more interactive and dynamic first person experience, like Mirror's Edge. They could even use some of Shangheist's assets, perhaps even making a game about heists. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXsJdTJQIFA. Joanna Dark is already a cool, female character. They could keep the game colorful, while keeping it dark(lol). Like a dark version of Mirror's Edge, where you are the predator and not the prey. Like Deus Ex, it could have a progression system, and give you some freedom of approach. I mean, imagine that it is a well equipped Joanna Dark sitting there, it's nighttime, the citylights, and you're scouting for a way into a building and tell me you don't feel something!

MS have plenty of other teams on Hololens. I suspect all their first party teams will get Hololens dev kits if they don't have them already, but the chances of this being a Hololens are probably next to nothing.

I would like to see what they could do with a new Jet Force Gemini. Keep the same art style etc but that game was clearly held back by the single stick on the N64 controller, would love to see a new one.

In my humble opinion if Phil Spencer wants to show faith to the the Rare brand, they need to have retail releases - everything is available to download - if State of Decay can get a retail release, Banjo franchise can as well. Plus Banjo can be that AAA platforming franchise to diversify the brand. Remember the humour in nearly all of Rares games were that double entendres. Not aimed at Children.

No, they did not. They did, however, do the far superior Viva Pinata. Some of the company's best work that I feel is severely underrated!

oh, my bad, thought it was rare who did that.

they were heavily involved in all those casual moves.... forced by ms.

Their main project will most likely recieve a retail release unless it is a "Games as a service" game like Fable Legends. And even then it'll probably get a retail release eventually.

As a matter of fact the only "casual" things Rare did was Kinect Sports. And maybe the avatar design, but that's a stretch (they didn't make the avatar games)

Nice, this is looking to be my highest-anticipated E3 in years.

Just with the possibility of these games (my own personal speculation + actual confirmation):

New Gears
New Mirror's Edge 2 stuff
New Mass Effect stuff
New Halo 5 stuff
Next State of Decay

And now confirmed new Rare game plus any other surprises.

I cant help but feel its a recipe for disaster assuming a $60 price point. Games are expensive to make, people trot out the whole "Yooka Laylee proves people want 3D platformers" but the fact is (even as a backer) it doesn't prove enough people want a AAA 3D platformer or similar styles to justify the budget it would require, they would have to do probably sell the equivalent of well over 10x what YL is doing

Phil's commitment should be having Rare make games people want to play, produced in a way that makes them sustainable to continue and make money, not throwing out AAA games at retail just because of "diversifying the brand", there are much smarter ways to do that, I don't see that it really matters if a game is smaller in scope, with a smaller budget if it means it can have a much great chance of success.

State of Decay is a post-apocalyptic 3rd person open-world zombie action simulator game, if that doesnt fit the current trend of video games I dont know what does, not to mention the game sold over 2m between XBLA and PC from June 2013 onwards, the last Banjo was in 2008 and bombed, the previous one before that was in the early 2000s?

Gaming has changed, the possibilities for delivering high quality content to the consumer has changed and those possibilities make it much more likely that they seek alternative avenues to make these franchises sustainable from a financial POV (which ultimately is the only thing that matters). We will have to see what happens.

People are unfair with Rare !

I saw that Technical Director @ Playtonic is Jens Restemeier. I'm sure this guy is really really great in his work, but it's good to know that highlights of his career @ Rare are Jetpac Refuelled, Perfect Dark Zero and handheld port of DKC. For most people that's not "true Rare" but guess what ? He is Technical Director on Yooka Laylee !

People need to know that people that worked on THIS game work on THAT one (and it's sad because I'm sure they are new talents @ Rare that are better than our veterans -no offense guys !-).

So maybe Microsoft needs to bring together guys like Gregg Mayles, Robin Beanland, Nick Burton and other Rare veterans on stage :

"Hi, I'm Gregg Mayles, Game Designer for Rare since 1989 and I worked on project such as Donkey Kong Country series, Conker, Banjo Kazooie or Viva Pinata"

"If we are on stage it's because we wanted to show you this .... THIS is the new game from Rare"

I thought about this a while ago and decided that if they decided to MS/Rare could bring the Souls vibe to younger audiences with a Battletoads 3D action game with similar difficulty and playstyle. Set the game in an open world based on the Battletoads universe, allow players to create their own hero or select one of the existing toads. Would I be against it if they did this? No. Do I think anyone would ultimately have any interest in it? No. Do I think that they will do this? No.

But, a 'AAA' game with the Battletoads branding is totally feasible given the popularity of hard as nails games recently and what could give the Xbox platform/MS ecosystem a game that sets itself apart from most other offerings on the market, especially the direct competition.

Having Gregg on stage to introduce the new game (and himself) to the world would be really great. Microsoft does this with every developer, so why not with Rare? It'd be fantastic. But just Gregg, there's no need to have Beano, Burton or anyone else. That would come off as a lame attempt to rub on people's faces that there are still several veterans there. Just show that the director of the current game, who happens to be probably the greatest creator Rare has ever had, is still there, and that will be enough.

I would totally buy this ! Last year, at E3, I had a heart attack because I didn't recognize Crackdown logo I thought it was a new Perfect Dark at first glance !

I hope Rare is working on a new colorful adventure game (because Xbox needs one) but a new Perfect Dark in 2017 or 2018 would be great :D

Dude, it surely won't sell very well, but you have to make these games now and then as a fan service.
See PlayStation -> A lot of the PS fans want Sony to acquire the Crash IP. Does it make much sense business-wise? Maybe not really. Does it make sense as a fan service to show your loyal fanbase that you care about them? Yes!
So of course some Xbox fans want new games of some old MS IPs.
And yes, it makes sense to make them every now and then.

It's probably Battletoads.
Just a hunch, but I'm pretty sure of it for some reason.
Yep, I think everybody knows this already.
It's either a new Banjo or Battletoads.

I bought my Xbox 360 for Rare games (and also third party releases), and I bought my Xbox One for potential Rare releases (and third party games). I grew up playing Rare games and I'm too big of a Rare fan to not at least try their latest games.

So excited to see something NOT Kinect Sports-related. Hopefully it's not Battletoads, as it's probably the worst Rare franchise to revive. Such a shitty, overly difficult game.

The Gears/Halo arguement is bullshit anyway. Franchises like Minecraft, Lego and Skylanders are doing well on Xbox platforms.

It's not like a new Banjo-Kazooie game would have to cost as much to make as a new Halo or Gears either.

I remember the last time I was excited for a Rare game at E3.

It was the Banjo teaser for Xbox 360 and I was excited.

It did not ended well.

I also hope it's not Battletoads. If they revive Battletoads, then please, by another developer akin to Killer Instinct. Also, Perfect Dark and Jet Force Gemini seem very redundant within the Xbox One line up - though I have to admit I also am against those because I hate shooters, so it's an egoistic approach, too. Banjo-Threeie would be fabulous, but Kameo, Conker (I know, no one is working on Conker right now), "Diddy Kong Racing 2", "Dinosaur Planet 2" or Blast Corps 2 would all make me very happy to have a Bone.

after nuts and bolts i don't want a new BK. plus Yooka-Laylee seems to be channeling everything good about BK anyway so i'd rather play that.

battletoads will be great, but needs to remain a 2D sidescroller

a new perfect dark would be great, but only if they go back to the original style and formula. zero was terrible and everyone knows it.

personally all i want from rare is a new conker. nothing will really excite me other then that from their back catalogue.

ultimately hoping it's conker or a new IP.
