one of the great troll conferences of our time

"yeah we aint got shit...but you still gon buy the next console for dat new Mario and Zelda anyway"

You're over reacting too much.
Yes, it's a dispointement but you should shit more on the leakers than Nintendo.

In terms of pure entertainment, Nintendo had the best. In terms of what's coming down the pipe, Nintendo mostly lost. They started off strong with Star Fox, but, to me, none of the rest of it interested me.

Hopefully next year is a big year with the NX. I really think they should do an actual conference at the convention centre next year.

I simply don't agree. Their position as far as core-oriented third-party gaming goes is so abysmal that they're effectively starting from scratch, and it's far too late to do that. Even MS, with far more resources at its disposal, took more than one generation to truly pull that off.
It's never too late, as long as money and innovation is involved

So any WiiU people here willing to upgrade to the NX after this console cycle?

nope, wii u burned me , they were lucky to have zombiU or i would have been more upset, the drought was awful
i'll wait til the holidays or if theres a huge launch line up with about 5-6 games i want.
$350 was such a tough pill to swallow

they can't even give us remasters like super mario sunshine, luigis mansion 1+dark moon , f zero or anything, cmon

This is what I keep thinking. Sony and the rest will mostly just show more of what they showed this year, while Nintendo will have brand new stuff + Zelda.

Yeah next year is Sony's show me year. If by then they don't start nailing down release dates for some of these games, then they can fuck off for doing this song and dance of promising the world even if the games are far off. As for Nintendo, I kinda see next year as a rebuilding year where they won't have a ton of stuff, but the potential will be there. Also, there's directs to release information throughout the year, so who knows. Till then I'll enjoy what they put out and check out till probably 2017

I just can't believe Nintendo had that little to show. Or thought they could show that little without also showing zelda

We've had some pretty barren E3s before. Like that one where all we really got was a small mention of Pikmin 3 for Wii in a developer roundtable. Next year they should have Retro and Tokyo EAD lined up among other things hopefully.

Not their responsibility.

They didn't promise huge surprises and megatons.

They showed exactly what they said they were going to, it just didn't jive with what many wanted.

Huge surprises and megatons are implicit in every E3 press conference. Nintendo's employees aren't unintelligent people - for as much as Nintendo is tripping up, they're still among the three biggest video game companies right now. When you go to E3, you know that people are expecting a big deal from you. A new platform or a new game. 2014 had Splatoon, Mario Maker, Yoshi's Woolly World, Bayonetta 2, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Xenoblade Chronicles X, more Smash, and Pokemon ORAS. 2015 was a huge drop-off from that level of megaton, and Nintendo should have understood that.

Metriod has always been a franchine that while fans want more of has never been that big of a hit, I mean fans cry for fzero but that doesnt make it a key franchise.

I see what you're saying but it's up to Nintendo to innovate the game to make it a hit. Marketing helps too. Splatoon is a relative hit in terms of the Wii U through innovation and a memorable marketing campaign. Apply that to Metroid and see what happens.

What were all these studio expansions for?

Miyamoto is out of his fucking mind to present Star Fox in this sorry state.

I understand the reactions and some of the hyperbole - to me E3 is a trade show where you're supposed to demo future software and hardware tech. As hardware is cyclical, this leaves software, which was lacking in my opinion.

I have no problem with Star Fox, as the premise behind the franchise has long since been established, and it will be fun. Not too sure about any of the other titles revealed at this point - they don't appeal to me in their current states (however this can certainly change over time).

I'm more concerned with the former statement made by Buggy however. I was under the impression that Nintendo was expanding their studios in an attempt at ramping up software production, and I have yet to see any tangible results from this strategy. If anything Nintendo seems to be struggling more and more in their attempt to release software on a regular basis in the era of HD gaming. Part of me really worries that they are getting left behind in this regard.

I really hope I'm wrong, as for the most part I like what Nintendo brings to the table.

You guys do remember that Nintendo does directs all year long and has a tendency to only announce stuff aside from Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon close to launch right?

We got Majora's Mask 3d announced out of nowhere for crying out loud.

Calm down. This conference had good games even if it didn't have all the ones you hoped for. Its Nintendo...they'll keep you in the loop when there is enough there to actually tell you. Better than the hype cycles for everyone else that last for 3 years or some stupid amount of time and then have zero hope of delivering enough to warrant trying to tell someone to stay excited that long. Strike while the irons hot...Nintendo doesn't like to give folks time to cool on their announcements too long so don't expect everything to be said and done.

Ah, right.
This conference's ending channeled so much my memories from 2012 and the fireworks. WHY DID IT HAPPEN AGAIIIIIIIINNNN

that's exactly what I thought of. "They cannot be making that same mistake again. They have to end on a new game reveal. And nope, they did it again."

It's E3. Sure, they do cool Directs all throughout the year, but history has said to us that the biggest Direct is the E3 one. We shouldn't be shamed for not expecting them to under-deliver.

If they've proved anything with the last two consoles and their recent history, I have absolutely no desire to support them on their next console.

I expect that Nintendo will try to get that "audience" with the NX, but I would be amazed if they were so tone deaf as to try to make it the focus like they did with the Wii and Wii U.

yes.

look at where nintendo was in the year before the wii u launch, compared to where they are now.

back in late 2011/early 2012, they were cocky as hell, sitting on piles of money, fresh off the wild success of the wii which eclipsed 100 million units. not to mention the success of the DS. they thought they could put it on cruise control and release a system which was:

- not well conceived in terms of its design or functional purpose
- had a weak game lineup not only at launch, but for the next ~18 months
- confusing in its name and marketing approach

it's clear they had no idea what they were doing with the wii u, and simply thought that because it had "wii" in the name, it would be another smash hit.

now, nintendo has their back against the wall. they're fully aware of the mistakes they made with the wii u, and i believe they're ready to rectify their current situation with the NX.

I'm not really sure why everyone expected huge games on a system that's dyeing and another that's at the end.

Tho I'm not entirely sure why I bought a new 3ds but that's my fault.

As I said to my wife while watching. These games could be great times, it all comes down to execution..

Either way, I commend the focus on games coming soon and not a cgi trailer of something we might make in 4 years.

Hey Nintendo, maybe people would be excited if you showed some new titles that weren't bastardizations of classic franchises.

Stuff like Mario Maker looks great though.

People are mad because after nintendo was forced to announce things years before release, the games shown today are seemingly low budgeted titles due to obviously shifting resources to the nx.

I just can't believe Nintendo had that little to show. Or thought they could show that little without also showing zelda

What they had could have been presented a LOT better.

INTRO: Lucas for Super Smash Bros. Also Roy. Then RYU. Say "available immediately after the presentation. Instead they released it a couple days too early. Same thing with the NES Earthbound. Putting that in the middle of the presentation along with more VC announcements (new Wii & DS games on the way!) would have been the way to go.

Then Star Fox. Cut a couple of those dev stories down, add in Project Treasure, Fatal Frame, and that mature game with that bald tattoed guy whose name escapes me. Maybe throw some indies a bone with a quick reel, especially for Fast Racing Neo. Making ONE third party exclusive announcement would have been smart (just imagine if Nintendo threw down the measly $2 mill needed for Shenmue).

No Zelda is peculiar. So peculiar that I don't think it's for Wii U anymore. I'd bet that it's going to be an NX launch title. In fact, them saying "here's what's available for the next 9 months" isn't them trying to be nice and not announce stuff too far out, it's them flat out saying the Wii U is done and everything just starting out in development is for NX.

So sad that they rised the expectation with the fantastic NWC...Everything about that tournament was spot on, with that surprise release of Earthbound Beginnings.

Not until Nintendo can give me confidence they won't abandon a console this quickly again in the future.

So just to be clear the Wii U is missing
- A Zelda adventure to call it's own (Zelda 2016 is on NX, accept it, theres no way they'd release it on a dead console)
- Wario (Land or Ware)
- Metroid
- F-Zero
- Animal Crossing
- Kirby (if Rainbow Curse is counted as a spinoff, is it?)
- Fire Emblem

You could nitpick and say spinoffs count (they don't) but my rebuttal would be that there's even more franchises that have nothing such as Kid Icarus and Punch-Out.

How am I supposed to have faith in the NX when these key franchises aren't supported?
This is what leaves me feeling a bit cheated out, even if the Wii U has been fantastic.

At the very least I expected an exclusive mainline Zelda, Metroid and Animal Crossing.

Let's hope they save some good stuff for E3 this time. It'd be so weird if they revealed the NX or Metroid or something in another direct.

You know what I hate? Getting hyped for Nintendo's E3 for an entire year, have it be shit, and realize I'm going to have to wait another year to get what I want. In the meantime, somehow I'll be like 47.

I'm just surprised that Retro didn't have anything to show. They said that they immediately started working on their next game after DKC:TF was done. To be frank, I imagine we'll see an emergency Direct in the Fall or January to address the lack of known titles coming in 2016. The danger there is that they would be cutting into their "reveals" for E3, but if people are still barking mad (they will be) then it is something they'll have to do.

The only thing that would've changed for today was Hyrule Warriors Legends.
Everything else was from Sunday, but that was still hype since the characters were released same day.

If they already ditch the WiiU so early then all they do is proof to me that they are not able to properly support a console. I would certainly not be stupid enough to buy the next console from a company that is not able to do that...

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Also, since it seems there's confusion again about NX, I'm going to quote what I said earlier.

- Going by usual schedule, we can make a fair guess about NX, and say that it's probably going to be a handheld. Or, going by Iwata's words, possibly the portable form factor of their new family-of-devices initiative. Which could indeed mean that, after all, it represents Wii U's successor spiritually, but still: it won't be a home console.
- It is possible they'll announce it and release it in the same year. I don't get why people think that what happened in the past (announcement one year, release later) is going to happen again, especially in the current social era, where you can pull off successfully a quicker announcement-to-launch period. The longest we'll have to wait for it is Q1 2017 (Jan-Mar)
- Personal opinion: probably 2016 will be the last year where we'll still see a decent pace of games on Wii U, 2017 will be when things will slow down a lot
- Almost forgot: No hybrid.

Adding also what father_brain said earlier

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=168441402&postcount=510

Ah, almost forgot.

This DE was so "peculiar" (yeah, let's say that way) that, while I stil won't go spelling DOOM everywhere (that's just stupid), I feel the need to see their upcoming non merely gaming initatives. And the first one we're going to witness is the new membership service. Which won't just affect Wii U and 3DS, but NX too. Hell, it'll be one of its core concepts. If they actually nail the membership service well enough, I'll have more faith in the whole NX project being executed correctly. That's what I want to see, absolutely. Call it the "first test".

I thinkk next year they will return to the stage presentation format. They can't reveal a brand new platform in rinky dink video.

They've been doing a lot of unprecedented stuff with these directs. I think revealing a console will be one of them. Seems like they're done with press conferences as live shows.

Agreed, but it's not what I and, I would've assumed before today, the majority of GAF would want.

It just seems massively delusional to me for everyone to expect some sort of software push for the Wii U. If it's not dead this year, then it's dead next year. It's going to come to an early demise, there's no getting around that. Why blow your load with new Metroid, Mario Galaxy-esque and Zelda games when you can hold out five more minutes and blow the doors off with your next console's launch lineup? Sure, it sucks that we're not getting everything we want right now but it is what it is.

I guess since the NX is coming next year, it makes sense to save everything for next E3 and blow us totally out then with it, and just accept a worse E3 this year. But even stuff like Devils Third, Fatal Frame, the 3DS Dragon Quest-games would have made this event way better - and were nowhere to be seen :(

Nintendo looked creatively bankrupt. Compare their titles to even indie developers and Nintendo looks defunct.

They are a slow company that can't compete with the massive road maps Sony and MS have in place. They need to be more agile if they want to succeed next gen.

This is why if they decide to do another console they NEED to get third parties on the system. If Nintendo gets into a rut or has to delay something, it is far more obvious than a Playstation or Xbox console. Sony's first party lineup for the rest of this year is very week because Uncharted got delayed and Cory Barlog's game got cancelled. That sucks, but because of third and second party releases it doesn't matter all that much. PS4 owners will still have a wealth of options.

In my opinion Nintendo can not survive on its own. Not for long. They need to do a better job of attracting third parties, keeping third parties and getting consumers to buy third party games on their system.

Well that or they can just dump consoles and go entirely to mobile/handheld.

Mario Tennis existing doesn't keep Strikers from existing. :p

Ideally though, I wish Next Level Games was making a Punch-Out!! and Camelot was making a Golden Sun though haha
