The Last Guardian Gameplay Demo (E3 2015) (PS4)

holy shit. Fucking phenomenal.

Also...I know the creature is called Triico, but it seems it's native name is "Eobai" or "Durgu"? That may be just the native language to beckon or call to someone though in the game...

I think that "Durgu" is actually "Toriko", which is the Japanese name for Triico.

How amazing is it that we are even playing such a YOUNG character? Often these days we play some grown ass man (or even woman now!)

I miss games where we play as a kid, exploring the world with innocence.

It's one of the things i consistently like about the team ico games is that their character have a degree of frailty on the outside but with a strong will/resilience on the inside. Particular with Wander in SotC has he degrades over time, his movement becomes more and more "broken" and you can see he has so much pain hanging on to the massive creatures but still does as he finds the strength inside. It's an incredible detail

That was also the best thing about Team ICO games, the attention to detail is just outstanding.

In SOTC, the Colossi don't just feel like "enemies", they feel like part of the environment. When you read into the background and fan theories, you see how much is said, but how little needs to be said out loud.

Ico takes one of the worst aspects of fames, escorting someone, and makes the entire game an enjoyable experience... when you run, you pull Yorda and she kind of stumbles. It's quite endearing.

I love Ueda's vision and Team ICO's games are just perfectly crafted.

Just watched the gamersyde HQ version. The image quality and graphics are incredible. Man the artstyle doesn't jive with low quality streams. One of the most interesting aspects of Trico is that its eyes glow red when it is angry or pissed. You can literally see it transition that is so eerie when you notice it.

Watching it, it's not angry, it's scared by that purple "eye" structure. It must be a form of magic holding Toriko back, which is why his eyes change color, and you can't advance with him until you destroy it.

I'm not a huge fan of how scripted all the interactions between the boy and the creature looked. Would've liked things to be a little more dynamic. Everything else looks amazing, though!

i thought i read that's all dynamic. someone correct me if i'm wrong

Said the tail grabbing was dynamic, not scripted, so was the climbing. I'm guessing the real big scripted thing is just the bridge falling down and the creature reacting to it.

To me this is mostly the showcase of a tutorial zone where every type of basic interaction of the creature is shown, seems very much at the beginning of the game, and the game is going "Hey, you can give this or that command, you can grab his tail or he can grab you. He's afraid of these totems. Sometimes shit will fall off and you'll also have to help him" etc...which makes a lot of sense since apparently thisi s the section you get right after finding the creature for the first time

Really surprised at how few pages this thread has after all these years of waiting.

I guess it shows that the cult of Ueda was extremely dedicated and vocal all this years
but overall stayed quite small in numbers to this very day.

It seems that Team ICO games are still somewhat...leftfield.

Probably this interview with Kotaku:

“The game is totally playable,” he said proudly, noting that Sony simply didn’t play it live during their E3 presentation because the artificial intelligence behind the big animal can’t be expected to behave in the most stage-demo-friendly way all the time. “We have a certain level of confidence about the launch window, which is why we showed it.”

The 1080p Gamersyde video looks absolutely amazing. And that's without the final polish this game will no doubt receive.

The more I watch the demo, the stranger the criticism against this game grows.

Did you guys notice that, in order for Toriko to swing its tail low enough to catch the boy, it actually took a step down in the structure of the bridge? And how about how fluidly he animates between "states", to the point where it's actually hard to point the transitions? Or how it got startled by the vase that was in its way? How the whole sequence of it running from the falling bridge being completely dynamic and how you're climbing up Toriko as it happens? How GOOOOD the music is?

The world and it's characters are dripping in mystery: Obviously Trico is the last of his kind but why? Who would want to kill these creatures when you can work together with them as evidenced by the relationship with the boy? Also why would the 'eye' statues have been errected? There must also be some sort of magical force that these statues have as it seemed to blur the screen and let out a humming sound. Who is the boy? Where is his family? How did he meet Trico and become friends? Does Trico understand his language?

So many intriguing questions and I love this sorta thing. The game definately has that SOTC/ICO feel to the world which is honestly all I need.

His eyes change color because they are dilating in response to fear.

Dilated eyes have larger openings which allow in more light, which means more light gets reflected out which means....

Red eye effect.

No magic, just nature. Being scared of a large eye design, thats also nature.

I just took the general design of the creature, the blue horns and red eyes to indicate that it was similar to the colossi in Shadow of The Colossus. Their eyes turned red when attacked, and a few had blue protrusions like his horns.

Nah it's not that, otherwise this thread would still be huge like every other tlg thread. Its that ultimately team ICO Games aren't for everyone and once the mystery surrounding the game wore off only the fans stuck around. It will sell great, however its not ff7 or even shenmue

I preferred Ico to SotC so this is like the ideal setting for TLG for me. Can't wait.

Soooo....the spoiler picture in the gedDESIGN homepage is indeed a spoiler? Ok it could be predictable that it would end like this, but there's a difference between predicting and knowing.

My interpretation is that is one of the other creatures like Trico, all of whom are dead and now he is the last one, hence the game title

Of course we won't know until the game is out

I get the PS3 comparisions but....Are people getting the art style confused with the graphics? I think that washout grey hue that surrounds the game is apart of the look. I don't think that is looks like the PS3 at all when you dig down to the nitty gritty.

I just rewatched it since I didn't get to see the whole thing during the conference and....OMG....I already KNOW I'm going to be crying playing this game. That Bird Chicken is just so adorable and the connection he has with his friend...is oh so...ugh, the tears are already building. I know this story will be great, I can feel it in my heart already. Seems like the gameplay is a cross between Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, with some well-integrated cinematics ala Uncharted. I'm really impressed by all of the ivy, feathers, and destruction effects. All of the motion really adds a convincing sense of place to the environment.

I got to see an extended version of this demo at E3. Just had a little more at the beginning than what was shown at the keynote. Not sure if anyone else has done a write up, but if anyone would like me to just let me know!

True, there is no evidence that anything in this demo had magical properties. It'd be almost foolish to assume that nothing in the game is going to be about magic, after Ico and SotC, though. Eurogamer article even pointed out that the older demo they saw on PS3 had an eery 'unplaceable' enemy, whatever that's supposed to mean.

Whats amazing are the little touches, the movement, the sounds. That is whats truly phenomenal, Toriko has so many little whines, chirps, squawks etc, absolutely brings the character to life.

On this specific point, could you really say the boy "owns" the guardian? I mean if it is true that it needs to be taught and essentially have bad habits broken, it stands to reason that particularly if he's learned through experience to be afraid of something, it wouldn't respond to "random boy who probably saved him" the first time.

I was thinking it wasn't so much a fear response in the traditional Pavlovian sense, but that the structure was specifically created to ward off whatever kind of creature Triico is. If there's magic in this world then it wouldn't be far fetched to suggest that the structure itself might've been imbued with special properties so it could affect the creatures sense of danger. It doesn't pose a direct threat or looks entirely operational if it's supposed to actually move around.

I'm also assuming that Triico is fairly young, guessing from the underdeveloped wings, and the small horns that it's reaction is at an instinctual level instead of learning to be afraid of them from experience.

I'm rewatching it again right now on my PS4 and paying really close attention to the interactions and expressions. It's so beautiful.

I wouldn't mind hearing you elaborate more. Also maybe the impressions of others, the atmosphere, any interactions you had the the presenters etc. All of it!

im so glad that this game isn't dead, it looks fantastic. I can't believe that we'll be able to play this in 2016, it's kinda surreal.
