The Last Guardian Gameplay Demo (E3 2015) (PS4)

So is it Toriko now and no longer Trico?

I think they're the same name... Toriko seems like just a more literal interpretation of the kana (and closer to how a Japanese person would pronounce said kana when speaking Japanese. They'd say the to part at the start pretty fast, making to-ri-ko sound like Trico. (Triko, w/e))

To think this was laughed at when it was leaked:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=225387

come from a pen friend of mine in SCEE

- TRICO is the project name for the sequel of ICO
return to the gameplay of ICO, adding the elements in Shadows of Colossus, like climbing
a kid together with a half-cat half-bird behemoth like animal, their journey through some spectacular ancient ruins
spectacular graphics and epic music

his comments: seems to uncover the untold emotional links of those two characs in Shadows of Colossus

This already brought up? The kid have black claw, he must be a demon or something, what if he was the demon in SoTC?

I was underwhelmed at first because like most I expected a complete graphical overhaul, but after further views my opinion changed and I'm sure it will look better by time it releases.

It's a buy regardless.

Heh, kind of a bitchmove that that thread was locked back then. :p

Hard to tell if they're claws or just tattoos. His hands were just tattooed when the game was on PS3:

Seems like they may be nonhuman now. Maybe the kid turns into a catbird when he grows up. Whatatwist.jpg

These games are so magical, I can't even describe it into words. Watching that gameplay demo (for someone who media blackouts everything, I couldn't look away) really soothed my soul.

The game is beautiful. It could be more "next gen" but I've wanted to play THIS game and this look for so many years, I am glad it retained its vision and style.

Regarding lack of posts, if this was revealed a day before E3, this would be a 100 page thread.

The lack of posts is a side effect of having FF7R and Shenmue 3 announced after this with the closing Uncharted 4 section and Horizon getting some serious love as well.

Man, Sony really knocked it out of the park. I'm not sure they can top that.

Jesus, is that image from the PS3 version? Really shows the visual upgrade

Just watched the trailer in HD...hard to decide which was is more beautiful. Horizon or TLG. Both high notes on completely different scales.

Slightly off topic, I could care less about 90% of Xbox1 lineup, but kinda piss that Recore and Scalebound are exclusive to the platform. I'm happy for the creators who are getting there funding, but can't help but feel they will all be a Sunset overdrive situation where the larger portion of the fan base for these experiences are still on PS consoles. Oh well, not enough to stay salty about it, just slightly annoying. Not getting a X1 until it's like $150.

Another whatatwist theory: The kid is being pursued/arrested (like Ico) because of a self-fulfilling prophecy (like Mono in SotC) that causes him to actually become Dormin at the end of the game and his connection to Toriko is what makes the colossi share his green horns, continuing the "sequels being prequels" theme.

Maybe the little boy is the last boss in SotC, as in the last guardian.

Tattoo on both hand, a robe like clothing...

It's a crop from a super high-res image, beyond what was intended for the game.

If you downscale that it looks fine. The actual game was hideously sub-HD though and suffered from awful dithered transparencies. Image quality is where the game gained the most on the PS4.

Some comparison pics of mr. Catbirdthing, cuz why not:

Trico has like more everything. More feathers, more fur shading, more whiskers, more hair, better shadowing.

Yeah the general image quality improve quite a lot from what it would have been on PS3. Glad to see that.

God's had his chance.
Yah they went to town with the feathers. Cannot wait to have it in motion on my big screen in front of me. Love the idea of them deciding against an actual demo as the AI is too unpredictable. Gives warm fuzzies.

Also headassplode.gif at the idea that the boy turns into Dormin ...

mayhaps when they lock his power away it manifests as the colossi as it's taking the form of the guardians he remembers as friends from waaaaaaaaay back in his past.

omg i cried.

You can see what the game looked like in motion on the PS3, last official footage:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010...ng-to-ps3-holiday-2011-watch-the-new-trailer/

Pretty...bad. Fuzzy, dirty, super blurry, jaggies that seem to have a life of their own, awful shadows. Soon enough they were going to make the game run at PS1 resolution to have the framerate be playable. :p

Just downloaded and watched the higher quality version from Gamersyde. I already thought the game looked amazing just from watching it on YouTube, but lawd this is so much better. If you can, you should really download the video from Gamersyde. It's so clean.

His eyes change color because they are dilating in response to fear.

Dilated eyes have larger openings which allow in more light, which means more light gets reflected out which means....

Red-eye_effect.png

Red eye effect.

No magic, just nature. Being scared of a large eye design, thats also nature.

Dude, Toriko's eyes were purple.

Dude, Toriko's eyes were purple.

Its called the red eye effect because thats what color it is in humans.

The color isnt uniform in animals, because of the tapetum lucidum, a special reflective layer in the retina of many animals' eye, which can result in a wide variety of different color reflections from the pupil. This is to help increase vision at night.

There is nothing magical going on, they are simply depicting the realistic reflection that comes from a very large animal eye, which gathers and reflects a lot of light.

This is not a demonic magical cat:

Well, probably not.

The more I watch the demo, the stranger the criticism against this game grows.

Did you guys notice that, in order for Toriko to swing its tail low enough to catch the boy, it actually took a step down in the structure of the bridge? And how about how fluidly he animates between "states", to the point where it's actually hard to point the transitions? Or how it got startled by the vase that was in its way? How the whole sequence of it running from the falling bridge being completely dynamic and how you're climbing up Toriko as it happens? How GOOOOD the music is?

It's insane how good that is. It's beautiful to watch it's reactions and details. The feathers moving and yeah can't wait to hear more of the music.

I have to say some of the boy's animation really felt off. Especially when pushing objects. I hope that's something they fine tune.

This looks crazy good. The sense of Trico being a living animal is unmatched by anything that I've seen before, you're not quite sure what it's going to do.

Late Jan release would be perfect for the game. Release it before the AAA floodgates open the following month.

There's a lot set for early next year, so i'm not sure if it's a good idea to put it there. The middle part of the year is usually a deader period for gaming. TLG would fit perfectly in there. The beginning of the year and holiday periods are what they want to avoid.

Yeah this game is wowing me in many ways. I can't wait!

I'm looking forward to the game, but part of me kind of prefers the darker shadowy look of the first couple of PS3 trailers. The game got a lot sunnier over the years.

I was actually thinking Summer. Early in the year we should be getting Uncharted 4, Late in the year is probably going to be Horizon.

We still don't know anything about Quantic Dream's game or GT (if they want to get it out before 2017). If this is true, GT might be put in the fall or Holiday, and Quantic Dreams who knows when. Bend also has to have something and Dreams should also come out next year. Like a late Summer (August/September) for TLG and maybe and Late Spring for Dreams (cause you don't want to put the artsy games next to each other). Just some assumptions

It might be a little too late now but if the game switched to a physically based renderer it would've totally look next gen and possibly one of the best looking games at the show. Not that the game looks bad, the boost to 1080p and improved aa greatly helped the iq.

I agree. It does indeed capture the spirit of a living animal. And it looks like the game explores the relationship between man and animal. Building trust, and friendship are likely huge drivers of gameplay and plot. Can't wait.

well, according to Yoshida the game is completely playable, and we don't know how much old this build is
but i agree with you on an early 2016 release, february maybe, the same spot where the order was this year

I really don't think it would look good releasing TLG after E3 2016. What are they gonna say? Here's the game you've waiting 6 years for.. back again... for another E3...

February is the absolute latest the game should release to avoid being kicked about by other major releases. If Sony has zero expectations for sales potential then release it whenever.

they're not going to top this no, but next E3 should be amazing as well. God of War 4, GT7, more Horizon and TLG gameplay, Amy Hennig's Star Wars,....maybe Crash Bandicoot >_>

Yeah, i've said it before but this game is really going to be a masterpiece. There's already so much just from this snippet of gameplay.

The lore/story told through design - the chain engravings on the stairs you go down right outside the hall Trico comes out of at the beginning. The structure that scares Trico and turns his eyes purple/pink...how they change back to normal after you destroy it..

The charm of the main character as well as Trico, the native language the boy speaks which is foreign yet endearing. The child-like tone he has when almost falling off ledges, or how his feet shuffle as he tries so hard to push a trolley.

The believability of Trico - how he moves and animates, and interacts with objects and the environment around him. The details on his design and physics working on his feathers...

The scale and consistency of the environment, the lighting, and oh my god the music.

Ueda is a genius.

I like how they're even getting the little details that aren't easily noticeable. After the boy goes down the stairs after petting Trico, after they do that pan of the area and the demo person swings the camera around a bit, when the kid's about to call for Trico and turns his head toward him you can see that even the little eyes are moved looking in his direction, like ND would do for that extra bit of life. On our TVs that'll look so good.

I have to say some of the boy's animation really felt off. Especially when pushing objects. I hope that's something they fine tune.

I'll need to watch it again but I thought the pushing looked fine, it comes off like he's struggling. Nitpickingly, maybe it's a tad fast, eh.

I would have liked to see his walk/run motion once or twice with a few less stops or starts by the demo player to get a real good look at it. :) Nitpick wise when he goes down the stairs maybe he leans back a little too much, though I like that it looks a little awkward.

I agree. I think the game looks phenomenal, especially in the way that the animal behaves and is animated. It's a thing of beauty. It actually looks and behaves like a living thing. I'm not sure how dynamic these scenes will be and how much room there will be for different actions, reactions, behaviour and outcomes (i don't think there will be much room for that tbh) but even then, the game should be amazing. Also, the bond between animal and boy is what will make the game so special (as was the case with Ico).

Also, i think that the artstyle is making it look less technically advanced than other games but that doesn't matter at all to me. It looks superb.

I think we'll be lucky if the game is out at the end of 2016 though. From the interview with Yoshida, i had the impression that a lot of work still needed to be done.
