The Last Guardian Gameplay Demo (E3 2015) (PS4)

Do most people agree that this was a good gameplay demo? It seems like a quiet portion of the game or just traversal from point a to point b. I dunno... I just didn't feel it was anything special. I still hold out hope and probably the most disappointing portion of the presentation was no release date. My guess is holiday of next year but yeah it was disappointing to see it again just to be left waiting when it will actually release.

Nah, that's probably just the tutorial. I accepted way better puzzles later in the game.

We can also see the boy and trico fight armored enemies in one of the trailers.

I believed in that moment, the boy was trying to kill Trico

Now a few of the things I hope seeing in the coming year at Paris games week, TGS and PSX:

- Enemies AI. In the old 2009 trailer there clearly were "statue people" enemies who were probably the ones who captured Trico and are pursuing the boy. Not only that but one gets severely rekt. I am wondering about their AI, what can they actually do and possibly what's their purpose.
- Puzzles with the kid alone. Kinda goes with the first one, but again, back in 2009 there were obvious setpieces where the boy is alone and has to use stealth and cunning to get past obstacles. Wondering how many environment pieces we can interact with, and how free we are overall.
- More environments for boy + trico. Goys without saying, I just want to see what other places we can explore ! And also how free does the interaction with big ol' fluffy catbirddog gets

More gifs because shit I love the animation in this game.

8AssA2Q.gif

The way different parts of the boy's body bob up and down make me think this is partially affected by inverse kinematics almost.

G9EmT7U.gif

Trico is easily the best animated creature in all of gaming if not just flat out the best animated character full-stop. Never seen such natural expression of fear in a game character.

xMlslAs.gif

The stretch, the tension in his muscles, dem feathers.

bMDT9Sk.gif

The way it moves and reacts reminds me so much of my dog I swear.

Probably a similar situation to the Colossi. Fans have given them names that have sort of stuck but they are officially unnamed.

No, that its name. The japanese title of the game is "Trico, the Man-eating Eagle"

And there are people thinking this is just some PS3 port LOL

I just noticed Trico seemingly looks back at the boy to make sure he's hanging on tight before initiating his running jump.

I only thing I dont like about this scene is that the little boy becomes Earth Worm Jim for a second and stretches as Baby Griffon is fleeing.

What I love about is that I this is just a glimpse of the "real-time" sequences were you as the boy have to make your way to safety using Trico's body.

fuuuuck I hope Ueda continues to make game like this after this is done. You just can't get this type of game anywhere else.

Look up Rime and Vane, they look pretty cool and devs said themselves they are completely inspired by Ueda's work (hell, Vane is made partly by ex- SotC employees).

Ueda has influenced so many people, we're bound to get a few indies and mid-sized title that will follow in his footsteps.

Although yes, i'd be curious as well as to what he plans to do after The Last Guardian

It's a dogbird tho

From here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Guardian

The game will revolve around the developing friendship between the boy and a giant, feathered creature, resembling a griffin, named Trico (トリコ Toriko?).[6][7] The name of the creature can be taken to mean "prisoner" (虜 toriko?), "baby bird" (鳥の子 tori no ko?), or a portmanteau of "bird" (鳥 tori?) and "cat" (猫 neko?).[8]

http://teamico.wikia.com/wiki/Trico

Toriko is the Japanese word for "prisoner"; fitting, given its initial predicament. Toriko is also a combination of the Japanese words tori (bird) and neko (cat).

I think it is a combo of a bird/dog/cat.

I really like the sounds that Trico (?) makes. Like the one in front of that sculpture thing. You could tell that it really did'nt like whatever it was.

I wonder if it's pet owners vs. people who don't have a pet. I don't see how a dog/cat owner could look at the video and not be immediately taken with how the animal moves. By far the most realistic representation of an animal I've seen in a game.

Trico's animations are unmatched and will remain unmatched for a very long time.

Agreed. Just these short snippets have animation better than anything I have ever seen in gameplay.

Show me anything currently on this gen or even PC that is gameplay and not a tech demo or FMV that has animations that match this.

I've always suspected that a large contingent of gaffers have a condition whereby they can only perceive select aspects of graphical quality, namely texture resolution and edge quality. Maybe something to do with real-time shadows as well.

This animation is next-level, game-changing shit, except it won't change anything because gamers are accepting of an extremely wide range of animation quality.

Case in point: Fallout 4. Animation in that game is objectively awful. People don't care. In fact, some people have deluded themselves into thinking that game isn't ugly as sin.

Trico will probably replace Agro ( that horse is still unmatched nowadays ) as the most real animal ever seen in a videogame
Look at his reaction here, where the boy jump for the first time

that expression, that posture ... Trico is really something else

sorry for the shitty loop in the gif :p

Actually no. It's just a couple of (western) artists who helped with TLG.

But yeah, Rime, Vane and Journey have strong Team ICO vibes. There's also Torne but it's pretty bad. Titan Souls is like an indie, 2D isometric version of SotC.

None of the above was/will be as good as Team ICO's titles tho, NONE. In fact, I'm thinking about quitting gaming altogether after TLG because nothing will ever match it, NOTHING.

I can already feel myself becoming completely sick of that kids repetitious call to the griffin it already annoying the shit out of me and there is no way I can cope with that for the whole game it's enough to make me not want to buy it.

Agro was mind blowing for the PS2, but I think RDR had better horses.

You comparing a PS2 game and AI to a PS3/360 game with more memory and better capabilities of what could be made for the AI.For the time and the architecture, Agro is probably a bigger deal than horses in RDR.

Hell the whimpers reminds me straight of my dog. Psychologically, those with pets will associate this beast as a pet because it's actually animated similarly and makes similar sounds. Between this breakdown you're asking for, I would break it down further and see if either dog or cat owners see it more like a pet.

Thank you for calling it by it's RIGHT name! And yeah, Trico reminds me so much of my cats it literally kills me. Like I don't know how in going to be able to handle it getting hurt lol

I definitely have a pet vibe with it. I am already feeling emotional with the fears that it dies.

I see you haven't played Ico (or SotC to a lesser extent)

God's had his chance.

Snipped: well... i guess they were told it was from halfway through the game? Sounds like what they were describing is after you've already met catdogbird and had him get into scuffles and get speared and you are re-meeting up with him to pull them out or something?

I agree that the puzzles/interactions between the two look like very early in the game gameplay. Hmm... strange that.

I love the way Trico animates and the way light shimmers off his weathers at times, good lawwwd. I cannot freaking wait to finally be able to play this baby. Been waiting for ever. :3

Sorry if this has been addressed earlier in the thread.

Did they change the wings on the Trico model since the original reveal? I seem to remember them being much more stubby/underdeveloped in the original footage.

the animation is insane. There are different aspects to games tech to analyze, and it's not always about raw geometry or high res texture work. That is seriously insane talent to get the creature animating that well. I cannot think of a game with an animal that animates half as well, and given that it is a dominate play mechanic, that's a huge feat since it'll constantly be on the screen

Yep that's me too. All I can think about is how it sounds and looks so similar to when my cat wants something or is scared. I felt like a big baby getting all emotional at the demo.

I downloaded the gamersyde video and watched it on my TV downstairs to get the full (pretend) effect of playing this game. The animations really are stellar and after waiting so long to hear anything about the game, the fact that it's coming out in a year (or less, hopefully) is W I L D.

i read someone saying here that ico bombed

according to Shu the team that made ico had 20 people and SOTC team was around 40 people.

so yeah not a chance those games bombed

edit: TLG probably has the same amount of people working on it
