Liam Robertson (of Unseen64 fame): "NX is not aiming to compete on a power level"

I think third parties could come back.

Just not this generation.

Maybe the one after, at best.

I honestly think that if Nintendo can make the right arguments with their product, third parties would have no problems supporting it, "inferior" power or otherwise. Of course this requires that Nintendo have a product that is immediately approachable and understood as the "new" from all angles and that they show that they're willing to go the whole nine yards with regards to making it easy to develop for and maintaining relationships with the third parties so they're well informed of what to expect.

bish gets all the credit :)
Ps4 was in the black when it launched 2 years ago at $400. If Nintendo is not even going to attempt that power level 3 years later, this thing better launch sub $200.

People already writing NX off because of one statement about power.
KuGsj.gif

Look, if power is a priority for you, then so be it. Power is just one aspect of a product though, so keep that doom & gloom card in your decks for now
(use it for the actual reveal)
. Even if Nintendo would offer a powerful console, it's not like third-parties would automatically jump on board; there is a lot more to be done, and what is more important than power is an active userbase.

The more I think about, the more I come to the conclusion that will be something entirely else than we all expect; not power-wise but what NX actually is and what it offers.

That we got a over 30 pages discussion based on 2 tweets, one stating he never said what NX is, is kind of amazing.

I don't see how anybody could be up in arms about this without even knowing what the thing is.

Where is the "This is Neogaf"- Gif when you need it.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. At the minumum, they should design the hardware escalable so current gen games can run at 720p 30fps easily, that would be very cheap as the current consoles aren't that powerful or expensive.Unless this is designed as a swansong console dedicated to their legacy games and a few other last hurrahs, this doesn't sound intelligent at all.

Are we sure it's 2 different paltfforms? i could swear I read here the idea was a transformer home console.
Nintendo specifically shot down the idea of a hybrid on multiple occasions. We're getting a separate console & handheld.

As for the rest of your post, it's what I've been saying this entire time. Third party companies only go where there is an audience for their games. Such an audience doesn't exist on Nintendo platforms if we're talking western third party companies.

What I don't understand about Nintendo is what they think their demographic is...

If it's kids, I feel like (but am not sure) that kids these days are less and less familiar with Nintendo franchises. My girlfriend's niece and nephew for example don't have any nintendo consoles but they will religiously play Minecraft on their dad's PC/PS3 or their mum's iPad. At their age I was being raised on Mario and Zelda.

So I can't say with much knowledge that kids are drifting away from Nintendo to mobile/tablet gaming but it sure seems that way from what I can tell.

If it's hardcore Nintendo fans, it doesn't matter what Nintendo does, they'll pick it up regardless in the hope for moments of the pre-Wii Nintendo genius, as with Mario Galaxy for example, but those seem fewer and further between than ever, and even at it's current size this Nintendo faithful group aren't generating enough sales.

And if it's gamers generally, they've already fully invested in PS4/Xbone. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of PS4 and Xbone owners would absolutely love to play the latest Mario, Zelda or Smash Bros game but they're not going to buy a console solely to do so when their PS4/XB1 will play similarly great first party games as well as pretty much all third party games.

So Nintendo would have to price a home console so low in order to tempt any significant number of those gamers to buy a second box, that it would probably end up being so underpowered that they would lose interest anyway.

Personally this is the reason I see Nintendo ultimately failing generation after generation. They seem to have backed themselves into this position over 10+ years of refusal to follow the tastes of their ageing, international audience and simultaneously losing touch with the child audience.

The exception would be if they managed to strike gimmick gold again as per the Wii.

The third parties aren't gonna come back either way.

Why do people keep saying this? It's not like third party developers hate Nintendo. Pete Hines from Bethesda has hit on Nintendo's main problem when it comes to attracting third party developers

"The time for convincing publishers and developers to support Wii U has long past. The box is out," Hine said, while sitting on a panel that also included Borderlands 2 lead writer Anthony Burch.

Hines pointed to Sony and Microsoft's diligent and long-running efforts to communicate with third parties during the hardware design process as a better strategy for most developers.

"It's not that every time we met with them we got all the answers we wanted, but they involved us very early on, and talking to folks like Bethesda and Gearbox, they say 'here's what we're doing, here's what we're planning, here's how we think it's going to work' to hear what we thought - from our tech guys and from an experience standpoint.

"You have to spend an unbelievable amount of time upfront doing that. If you're just going, 'we're going to make a box and this is how it works and you should make games for it.' Well, no. No is my answer. I'm going to focus on other ones that better support what it is we're trying to do."

Nintendo is constantly making consoles for their own developers, and then they expect third party devs to just jump on board for whatever reason. Why couldn't they get more support if they actually tried to use third party input for once?

We still have no idea whether these rumors are about their next handheld or console anyway, especially if NX actually is a family of devices that includes both, like many expect. We still know too little to make any definitive conclusions about Nintendo's next hardware aside from what they themselves have said.

Besides western AAA 3rd parties have already proven that they won't actually care about Nintendo platforms unless forced to.

One would assume this is specifically why they're making deals to leverage their IPs in movies, theme park attractions, etc.

I'd absolutely get one at that price, but I dont expect the console to be less than 200 at launch no matter what. Even the Wii didn't hit pricing below 150 for years, and that was way weaker than the competition.

Wii was also lighting the world on fire with sales, alternatively, the Gamecube reached $99 real quick

Edit: As Alberto even said, Nintendo isn't really being stubborn with the Wii U pricing so much as they basically forced themselves into a corner in terms of profitability on the system

"When will third-parties return brehs"

When the AAA bubble explodes at some point in the future because of bloated budgets, the focus on "bigger-everything" and putting studios at risk by betting everything on one card. When #OperationOpenWorldAllTheGenres will fail at some point (which it already does to some degree if you read/hear about behind-the-scenes stuff).

People front Tamaki a lot recently because of E3, and while I admit that I disliked him being on a powertrip and acting cocky during that time he still is a person who really puts a lot of time into his work and is usually pretty smooth. Also, he has a pretty good track record and I completely believe him when he says that he has sources to back his claims. That 'Fallout 4 is current-gen' tweet was never him leaking info afaik but his own prediction, but I assume he deleted that one since people used it to discredit him and his work.

Unfortunately he's banned right now, otherwise he could have checked with one of the mods and we had validation. But yeah, I believe him.

A good video related to your point.

One would assume this is specifically why they're making deals to leverage their IPs in movies, theme park attractions, etc.

If they are able to grab kids attention again and get another generation growing up with Nintendo franchises then for sure they will be hugely successful, at least until that generation is our age and doesn't necessarily want to play only Nintendo-style "family friendly" games anymore.

I would imagine they will have a better chance of achieving this than Sony, but it seems like Sony are themselves making a bit of a push for the kids market next year with R&C and it's corresponding movie, plus the same with Sly Cooper - but I can't tell how much Sony are going to invest in that push.

But if R&C turned out to be THE huge kids movie of Easter 2016 and it prompted enough kids to pick up the game on their parent's PS4/convince their parents to buy a PS4, then Sony could have a chance, but they'd need a much bigger catalog of family friendly games to keep up any momentum.

Meanwhile I don't know why Nintendo hasn't completely sewn up that market with either it's own CG movie studio or a deal with Disney/Dreamworks, and it's own fully Nintendo theme park in Japan etc.

That falls in line with what Iwata has been saying these past few years, so no huge surprise if it's true.

Super affordable handheld and console versions both sharing the same OS and library of games (easy porting between the two). No AAA third party games, but indies should be on board and there'll be a steady stream of first party games at least.

Just to clarify, I don't say he is wrong, it was just a statement about how much the discussion lacks ground.

The "Why would anyone buy both" problem is why I suspect they'll have different games with a few games being different bites at the same apple.

I don't necessarily think it's a good idea, but everyone is keen to tell me how wrong I am, so I'm not going to fight over it.

Not even if it's Pokemon Stadium on NX Home and Pokemon mainline on NX Go?

Yeah, this is kind of Nintendo's best shot. AAA isn't long-term sustainable and the industry has kind of gotten itself into this weird mess where we're building nuclear weapons and hoping they hit their targets. People on GAF don't notice because, as an end consumer, it's great. Companies are making $100 million bets on us! We reap the rewards whether they succeed or fail!

But how long it will be sustainable is another question. Could be a decade, could be less, but eventually something's gotta give. With an increasingly contracting handheld industry and mobile increasingly being a den of whales alone, I wonder who will be first to just leave game development all together.

Well, the source still doesn't mention what the heck the NX is. In the end, I go towards the games. The NX will be able to play games, is the only thing that we know.

The rumors of Android emulation, unified architecture and account management, the mobile games coming this year. All seem to point to be able to play different kind of games, released across multiple devices under one platform. That's already nice in my book, so...just bring the games!

The Wii U was too expensive as a Nintendo only machine with no third party support. Something cheaper with a similar software lineup will probably sell much better than the Wii U. It still seems odd though, because Nintendo would be relegating themselves to a niche player in the market they have at times dominated.

Because it's too late in the current generation to even consider trying to penetrate the hardcore market. And third parties would be still apprehensive of supporting them. While Gearbox would go in if their requests are met, others would wait for an audience that will never come to Nintendo systems.

The fact the we have kickstarters for almost any decent sequel/nostalgia project should tell us a lot about the state industry. PC getting a whole bunch of ports and selling for peanuts in STEAM sales is also telling. Maybe in the near future being a spec powerhouse is not that much of an asset but a hindrance? In the end, if Supermario Strikers Cheap makes a 20% ROI and a AAA title makes a 5% ROI, the industry will adapt

So...Sony and MS went to devs about how they wanted to build, design the system and got their input? Amazing. And kinda explains why the 2 systems are so similar.

And why the Wii U is so different.

Wow...sounds like some of the same things we say on NeoGAF...lol.

Got to agree with Scum there, that'd be Nintendo at this rate. Like I said earlier, they're competition-shy.

I already stated this in that NX thread after e3. Nintendo is not going to make a powerhouse system. If anything, I see them making something that aims to be stronger than the Wii U but cheaper than the Xbone and PS4.

Sounds like they are making an OUYA kind of console. If so, it will be able to play third party games (games already on the android store) and the android games that Nintendo will start developing. Win-win.

Literally everything you mentioned is possible on a single screen.
Plus, single-screen 2DS form factor is more appropriate for GamePad functionality if that's to be carried forward. That was the original intent with GBA/GC connectivity and I don't think Nintendo will ever pack one in with the console again.

I tell you what....

Let Nintendo announce they are getting out the home console business tomorrow and they are partnering with Sony and the next main Mario or Zelda game will be on PS4 next year.
You would be one of the first to get a PS4.

I could care less about Sega ever making another console....I still got to play Sonic games after they got out the hardware business.

But then those games became bad because everyone lost their motivation and pride in creating those titles. People who did multiple things at the company were then just making games and were paid a lot less for it.

You'd get Mario on other systems.

But you probably wouldn't get good Mario.

Do you realize almost every single one of those restaurants fails miserably a few weeks after Ramsey visits

I dont know. I don't watch Kitchen Nightmares. The UK one was the only good one. He does those given up bits in all of his shows. He did one on Master Chef the other night. So your little point is kind of silly for a lighthearted comment. Perhaps you should get a sense of humor or something.

lmao yeah games like sonic 06 and shadow the hedgehog really validate sega leaving the hardware business

What an odd reply.

I don't see how anybody could be up in arms about this without even knowing what the thing is.

Yeah, like there are many things the NX could be. This mysticism that surrounds it is ridiculous, shit is just a console, that comes to try and get nintendo to a better position this generation, there's no magic thing, or cloudiness or anything.

You got to play a bunch of mostly garbage ass Sonic games. Add the fact that most of the franchises Sega is known for are dead or close to it, and it should be pretty obvious why you don't want Nintendo to go the way of Sega.
