Sprites that look like things they're not supposed to

Black Omen from Chrono Trigger:

What it looks like:

What it really is:

Because the top of the structure is really this part:

The Black Omen is a Star Destroyer and not some sort of weird-ass flying tower.

The last image still doesn't make sense to me though, particularly the zoom-in. If the Black Omen is a star destroyer, shouldn't you be able to see the lower/main level of the ship in the background as opposed to the moon over the horizon?

Don't know if anyone else saw this one, but growing up I used to think the P-Wing from Mario 3 was a gloved hand pointing.

Se28Njs.jpg

You just blew my mind. I knew it was called the P-Wing, but I always assumed the icon was Mario pointing like "yep, I got this" kind've like the Hulk Hogan point.

Yeah when little I always thought it was a hand, though at that time I didn't know the name of it. It's not like it gave you wings in the game so there was know way of knowing either unless you had the manual which I didn't till much later.

Because that minitower on it might be tall enough that the front is obscured by it

I'd be in the dick
I was going through this thread thinking I saw pretty much everything as intended until I hit Black Omen. Holy shit.

Exactly in fact saying the shadow makes it obvious only makes it obvious you don't understand refraction and light angles. CuZ the game doesn't prove squat in its display
The Epoch shadow is located just as Black Omen's shadow, right below it. Though Epoch's shadow does not "intercept" the Epoch sprite since the vehicle is smaller.

This is my favorite thread of the year so far. I love that a few people are clinging to green haired hippy and flying tower misinterpretations. The change is just too mind blowing after all these years.

Holy shit. I always assumed that it was a tower especially the way it's shadow was shaped. Looking at it now though it makes sense that it isn't.

Oh shit, like a lot of other people, I thought it was a flying tower too!

No one in the thread is clinging to the wrong looks. Everyone is aware of what they're supposed to look like, they're just making it known why they saw it wrong.

Anyone else thought Norstein Bekkler's nose looked like a tongue in Chrono Trigger?

It's obvious it's a nose when he moves around:

But still...

When I first saw this game I had no concept of what an FPS was. I saw the pistol as a helmet and the hand as a brown cape or leather jacket. Thought it was a TPS, without knowing the term. When I picked up the shotgun I was suprised that the character changed so much. Must be a backpack for ammo or something, I thought. Then I fired it, and there was the pump action motion. I was shocked and really had no idea of what was going on..
This really intrigues me. I can totally see your way of seeing it, though, I doubt I will ever have the same overall feeling as you had. That must have been wild!

Boss from Bonk's Adventure. Her hands are actually clasped together right in front of her chest, but I always thought she had a really skinny neck and weird claw hands...and an exposed rib cage.

This sprite from Paradroid is supposed to be an orb with the number "001" on it. The zeroes always resembled eyes to me, though, making it seem like the droid perpetually had a bored look on its face.

The main character from Phantasy Star 2 has something on his head when he's facing up. As a kid I always thought it was one of two things

1. A bald spot
2. A crown, like the end would have him revealed as the prince of Algo or something
and I wouldn't play the first game for about 8 years after this, but I still Encyclopedia Browned it

Both with the "the sword looks like an arm holding a green stick" and "the sideburn looks like the second eye" I feel like I have to force my brain to switch from one interpretation to the other.

It's almost like a physical feeling of a switch being flipped.

To you and anyone else talking about how the shadow makes it obvious...it doesn't. The shadow and silhouette of the ship are poorly designed, and should've been cast from another angle.

rlO0WL9.png
But... that shadow isn't like the one in the original pic at all. It's further up so it looks like the pyramid pic. If that was how it looked, I would understand the confusion.
But no:
Black Omen from Chrono Trigger:

This is what I see, and I see this very clearly:

I dunno how it actually looks in game since I have not yet played it, but based on the original pic there was no question for me that is was a flat-ish thing.

I was just thinking about this thread the other day.

In Sonic & Knuckles, they have these stone blocks in Sandopolis zone:

aer2aoT.png

For the smaller blocks that you push, they just mirrored the edge tiles:

I always thought it looked like the top of an old man's face with a big nose:

Huh, interesting. What has been seen cannot be unseen.

I'm laughing so hard right now, holy shit. You've made my day.

The first time i saw the original Psyduck sprite in pokemon blue, i thought it was a donut shaped pokemon, i later noticed it's a duck (thanks to the name).

Tried to find an image, but it's easier to see it correctly in color (only sprite i could find) than the 4 shades of green my OG gameboy used.

Not a sprite, but a related example most of us should be familiar with:

Basiliskeyes.jpg

Those orange things are not the eyes.

Wow, this changes everything. Ha! Have encountered these nasties in both Dark Souls games and always thought they looked way odd. Like too goofy with their huge cartoony eyes. It's the first time I see where their actual eyes are and all of a sudden they look so much meaner and that more in line with the overall art style of the game. They look so nasty I almost dread encountering them now, when before I used to just laugh at their cartoon frog faces.

Holy shit, HE WASN'T A DOG?!

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME

This in particular is one of those things I can't believe the sprite artists didn't see. I get that you are limited with what you can depict. But this sprite definitely looks like a dog. The features are distinct and clear.

This isn't some childhood ignorance of developing brains finding the wrong shapes, this guy is a dog.

I say this having never played the game and only seeing this sprite now.

Some stuff, like the Black Omen, is made ambiguous by the technology. And I get that. Stuff like the Basilisk is supposed to misdirect you on purpose. But this guy? This guy is a dog. Somehow, the artist accidentally made a dog and everyone was like "okay."

I dunno, he always looked like an old man with a moustache and long hair to me....

I mean, I can see where people are coming from, but I don't think he looks any more like a dog than any other person with a moustache. I.e. the similarities are there but superficial. It's not like FFVI had a bunch of animal people running around like FFIX, at least not as members of the Empire.

His hair looks like long, floppy ears and his beard looks like a snout.

I dunno if this has been mentioned yet but Square Enix seems to be aware of the confusion... Look at this recently added minion (vanity pet) in FFXIV:

This little dog dressed in emperor's clothes is literally called Gestahl.

Didn't that go out of the window as soon as you saw every other droid in the game, though?

Thanks for the necro. :')

I'll add one more: downed X in Mega Man X5 intro stage:
8FKNp42.png

Might be just me, but I can't figure out what the part indicated by the arrow is. Is it :
- X's right foot, him being in a weird open leg position
- X's right knee destroyed and separated from his leg

?

Dear god, that looks like some sort of insect sex or human centipede or something.
