Rise of the Tomb Raider: Preview and Technical Analysis (NX Gamer)

LOL! NX gamer fucked up big time.

I'm still not understanding how he grew to any sort of prominence. It just seems like a few posters were pissed that DF found a few aspects of a couple Xbox One multiplats a bit better than the PS4 version (despite favouring PS4 overall) and suddenly this guy became a thing.

I think it was around the peak of the PS4 AFGate.

From memory so many last gen game look a lot better than they actually did. Yes the original did look really good. But the difference was immediately apparent to me, I said "wow" when she turned and started talking. Truth be told keyframed facial animation on these super realistic characters really don't cut it anymore so it's good to see them using facial capture for their characters.

You're probably right. I haven't played TR for a while. There's also the fact that it has a pretty similar art style, such as it is. Personally, I don't really feel all that strongly about Lara herself having an insane character model, as the only issue I had with TR graphically is that it didn't indulge in more fantastical design when given the opportunity. It created an incredibly detailed overworld, but with rare moments of crazy design. So things like a ship trapped in a frozen waterfall is what I want to see more of. The character model is nice and all, but it's not would turn the game around for me if I want it to.

I'm also really interested in seeing what Rhianna Pratchett does with the story. She's one of those writers I don't think has done anything particularly great, but I am rooting for her as an underdog of sorts for her to come into her own. I should probably read the TR comics she wrote. I've only read the Gail Simone one so far.

The trail looks absolutely horrendous, thankfully the actual gameplay segment after that was good but this is a tech thread and damn, the cross gen base of this game shows. It's not a very impressive game at all on a tech front, there was no need for them to go cross generation for this, rather just worry about the XB1 and nothing else. Can only assume that the studio thought last generation sales would not fall off a cliff like they did.

They thought a lot of things about this generation that haven't happened quite as anticipated.

I'm not getting the love for this NX Gamer dude. Doesn't he just do everything by eye off videos? How do you take that seriously?

Don't Digital Foundary have actual equipment/software they use to measure framerates, resolution etc?
He often catches many things that DF misses with their "devices". It's also pretty pathetic how some people are getting off on him being wrong, come on guys/gals really?

The facial animation looks great but I'm not impressed by everything else. I hadn't seen the video until everyones omg reactions and leave disappointed. There is something about it that I can't quite put my finger on that raises that uncanny valley for me. Its obvious the animations are more fluid, and the scene looks more alive but the world looks plastic. Her face and hair looks great but her clothes look completely static. Also the snow deformations look nice but off. It looks like the snow is just opening up before she actually plants her feet. It's definetly a step up from last game but not as big as some made it seem.

Crystal has seemed rather obsessed with Lara's model since their first trilogy, so their commitment there is pretty much a given, but their environment art has been on point too, MO.

Speaking of Crystal's past games and the current writing, I'm not against Pratchett's work but I wish whoever wrote Legend/Anniversary/Underworld was back because they were doing a much better job in dialogue at least. I'm both curious and cautious of whatever she's doing in the comics.

I can't say to have played those other games, but Rhianna seems to go for a highly realistic kind of dialogue. At times, it seems almost cliche and generic, but in real life, people aren't spouting one liners or even intelligent commentary of any kind. Much of what we say is filler. That's a dangerous way to write dialogue because the price of realism is a certain amount of blandness.

Which is a huge deviation from her father's style, which is often comedic in tone (though I should probably read more than his Discworld series and Good Omens, granted). I wonder if it's on purpose and how she regards her fathers style. The only comedic game I know she worked on was Overlord, but I haven't played htat one myself, so I don't know how she did with that.

I'll read a few comics now, see how they are.

I really think this game has a chance to be something special especially with tombs to explore and puzzles to solve. Give me the first game with tombs to explore and more than happy. The graphics look great but not as spectacular as Uncharted 4. I didn't like the story for the last game especially compared to Naughty Dog games. However, I loved how open it felt, but I feel it was missing the actual "tomb raiding." The one aspect I love about Tomb Raider games is the exploration.

I love the original Tomb Raider minus the controls and clunkiness. For me it is the best of these type of games. There was a real sense of exploration and isolation. I felt that there was an actual challenge instead of just being led through the narrative down a singular path. It had tombs in it and it felt like you needed skill to finish it.

I recently finished Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition and really enjoyed it apart from the sporadic frame rate, so I'm glad this one will come to PS4 and PC eventually after thinking it was a full exclusive. I will most likely opt for the PC version this time though.

And some people aren't doing that as well.

Its a technical analysis both the title and the content speak to the video content being of a certain kind. However many times this kind of rush is sort of transparent for views and you see some guessing occurring and just true mistakes being made. Either due to rushing, or not having proper data. That's exactly the opposite of a technical analysis. That's regardless of anyone doing it right or wrong elsewhere.

Seems well done to me

That snow deformation looks cool. I think small things like that are gonna added for a more immersive experience going forward. Still needs work but game is still cooking.

Really hope they can hit that 1080P/30FPS. Game looking solid so far.

Ya you know for many games it is just all those small things sort of building on one another to solidify the atmosphere. Its look like they are nailing that.

Well he has a frame counter, and I dont really know any other youtubers who do in depth tech analysis of games.
Albeit ive seen Gaffers post info as in depth as him, but i would usually have to go through threads slowly seeing what one gaffer found, then the next then the next.

NX Gamer is like an agrigate of what i could probably find myself, all in one video.

He def isnt the end all be all of tech analysis but i give him props for effort.

Completely wrong actually.
NX Gamer really got big because of Watch_Dogs, the downgrade fiasco got him a ton of subscribers.

After that it was in indepth love affair with The Order but probably his biggest influx which was relatively recently was how impressed he was with Uncharted 4.

Watch pretty much any of his Attention 2 Detail analysis videos and you can easily appreciate what he is doing.

lol you will fight the image? The deformation is not coming before she plants the feet..at all.

It also takes into account what part of the leg/feet is being in contact. Impact the movement, etc.
I take it back that gif made it clear what I saw as "off". The deformation is lagged behind by quite a bit. It's like drawing on an pad and the paint (texture change in this case) coming in after the stroke. I'm sure that will get fixed then.

It's harder to see in that GIF, but it could definitely do with some work. Collision alignment and mapping just needs to be fine tuned, but I think they should be able to sort it before release.

I don't have a One, but this looks spectacular.

I bought the PS4 version of 2013, loved it, and am really jealous that One owners get it, at least first, if not forever exclusively.

Enjoy it my gaming brudders and sistahs.

It's a little ehh at the moment, but it won't matter when actually moving at a faster speed in combat.

It is actually a pretty neat effect because it looks like the snow is actually displacing under her. It's hard to tell since we can't move the camera. It also looks like it is computationally expensive which is why it doesn't seem to be matching up with Lara as it is couple frames behind. It almost looks like they are updating the effect every couple of frames instead of every frame. So the framerate of the effect is slower than the game's framerate.

I believe that in Last of Us and Uncharted 2, Naughty Dog used projected particles with illusion of parallax by creating shadowing on the decal based on the camera direction. The actual footprint is flat against the surface of the snow, but the illusion of depth is created through the shadowing which changes based on how you view it. Through shadowing they are also able to change how deep the footprint looks. It's fake parallax deformation. Here's what the effect looks like:

Maybe the snow is a little too fine, sand like in the way it easily flows. It's a tough balance though, so I feel it's a non-issue. If they can make it deform with a bit more weight it could benefit.

Snow can be that fine if it's fresh powder and really really cold. At really cold temps snow crystals are less likely to stick together.

Must PS4 owners plow through every thread like this? You fanboys pulled the same "concerns" when you were trying to make every Sunset Overdrive thread a comparison to Infamous.

How they will do this? predicting the player movement? Guess you will always have something to complain about

Pretty sure they are already happy with the effect. Very happy.

Only in the very extreme condition (legs almost entire under snow) there's some weird reactions, but the real situation is already weird. Even when she stumble, the effect changes too

Actually I think I know what you guys are finding strange. The animation system itself is not so fluid as the "other" game (gifs are slowed down). And I don't think it will be "fixed". This is how the game is.

What the hell are you talking about? What face off is he doing here with Tomb Raider? Hell, he hasn't even said anything negative about it. 900p is only a negative for people who care. He hasn't said anything bad about the games performance.

All he did was wrongly count pixels. My point was, why would people put stock in someone who does something purely by eye?

Would you trust someone who tells you the distance of a road by eye? Or the person who measures it?

No idea why you went so defensive so fast.

But I was under the impression that why DF is who they are is because they have proven details/numbers/stats what have you. Generally what they have can't really be "debated" given there is concrete data. If NX Gamer is basically doing it by eye, then technically any of us could do what he does. If we cared enough to observe in the detail he does.

I only first heard of him on GAF after one of the DF Face Off threads came to the conclusion that a multiplay had a more stable framerate than a PS4 version. Can't even remember which one it was. Unity? Not 100% sure, but as a result, I suddenly saw posts popping up about this guy. Then watched his Uncharted vid and noticed that he simply talks about stuff any of us could see.

I guess it comes down to what people care about? Actual technical analysis or detailed observation? I"m not having a go at him, it takes commitment to do what he does, I'm just surprised that on a forum like GAF where concrete data is valued pretty much above all, a guy like this would even be given much time of day.

Thread A: It's a huge difference, super noticeable, you'd have to be blind to not see it. 16 bajillion pixels difference. Facts.
Thread B: Really, the dev said that? Are we sure though? Can someone double check this for us? You sure he's not Greenberg?

:p

Gee whiz I wonder if I can guess the different contexts of threads A and B!

Well, yes I pixel counted it on page 4 and found it to be native 1080p.

To claim its 900p is more than just getting an assumption wrong, or being a bit wrong. There's a huge of difference from a basic technical analysis.

I suggest to him to google pixel counting and actually learn it if one wants to do technical analysis instead of assumptions or checking on info, it's very easy. Devs say this and that all the time, whether he read my post on his youtube channel or read it here I'm not sure, the dev tweet is days old and I'm the only one to bother. I've been doing it since Quaz51 but many people can do it on here, just its not much of a surprise this gen.

When I downloaded the E3 video weeks ago I could tell it's native 1080p without pixel counting. Then this "analysis" thread popped up and I download it again yesterday to confirm. When something is 900p or 1340x1080 or 1440x1080, you have obvious huge steps in lines, think of bigger jaggies and an overly blurry look. With only horizontal scaling you only get that in one direction, with 1600x900 it's in both directions and even more obvious.

Not to try and shit on NXgamer but you have to stick to your knowledge. Witcher 3 doesn't have tessellation on rocks or ruts. He rightly noticed godrays missing on a Far Cry patch and has a good eye for little touches like in Uncharted 4's first reveal and also has frame rate testing, its good to have more people doing that as I know from PC benching that you need to do a thorough job and some people don't test later stages and claim something from just a prologue area.

Again I should just say, the media so far is native 1080p, the game on release could be any resolution.

I think the deformation looks great. I'm just not sure why in 3" or less of snow she's dragging her feet through it instead of picking them up! Maybe it's leg day for Lara

Ok so he counted pixels wrong and got 900p from a 1080p picture... I thought you had to be blind to not see the difference??
Oh well game looks great regardless and is day 1 for me.
