Can someone please explain what I'm supposed to see here?
All I see is a dude wearing an athletic cup and it's bothered me since I was a kid.
This is what I always thought but now I'm seeing a guy being sucked off by a Bellsprout.

Agh from A Link to the Past.
Holy shit. Thread still delivers.
Always thought that was supposed to be a smiley face, since Super Mario World is full of those.
Nope. It's a foot. It's why one "cheek" is longer than the other.
this might help
Some of yous guys... I don't know how you're seeing what you're seeing.
I thought it looked like a giant insect. Two huge eyes at the front.I didn't see the Black Omen as a tower, but what people are seeing as the back of the ship is what I still see as the front. It's a backwards Star Destroyer with a 'head' at the front that looks like a alien from Independence Day.
Also its thrusters are breasts. I dunno. I guess that is the back.
Grahf's profile from Xenogears:
The peon portrait in Warcraft 2 threw me off for years. Probably due to his right eye just barely being visible so I hardly even noticed it.
His left ear looked like his left eye and that he was winking or something. The left cheek was some kind of beak and the tusk his smiling mouth.
I saw it a third way, the tan part under the eyes was a mask or scarf. The official artwork in the manual of Agahnim shows him with a scarf or something around that part of his face, so....

I know its off topic but it kind of has a home here. I have been battling this for 30 years now.
Its a fucking backwards G with a line through it not a D.
Cue Ball in Pokémon Red/Blue always seemed a little... Off to me.
Looks like he's wearing a bellsprout cup

Don't know if anyone else saw this one, but growing up I used to think the P-Wing from Mario 3 was a gloved hand pointing.
my siblings and i used to think this was / call it a 'paw'... am i mistaken that it isnt actually referred to as a p-wing within the game?
Also:
And who knows, there could have been a plot twist that Gestahl is an Esper out for revenge against his race or something.
From Lone Survivor. It's a surgeon's mask, not a smile.
I always thought Toad transformed into a wise-man toad during his "bowing/gracious" animation when you return the kings back into their original selves.

Boss from Bonk's Adventure. Her hands are actually clasped together right in front of her chest, but I always thought she had a really skinny neck and weird claw hands...and an exposed rib cage.
I do love Shovel Knight, but there's this merchant character, Chester - and I can't quite make out what he's supposed to look like. There's definitely something funky going on with this sprite's face.
Apparently this is what the sprite is supposed to represent... I'm not seeing it.
haha, that's fantasticI dunno if this has been mentioned yet but Square Enix seems to be aware of the confusion... Look at this recently added minion (vanity pet) in FFXIV:

This little dog dressed in emperor's clothes is literally called Gestahl.

This is mind-blowing every damn time I see it I only realized it should look like the one on the right a few years ago, meaning I lived nearly 15 years with a lie.
Agh from A Link to the Past.
For some reason i really love this thread lol
He makes me think of galactus

I had no idea what that was until I saw the art showing what it's supposed to be.
Just ignore the hair and focus on this part.
This is hilarious. I genuinely, fully cannot understand what you are seeing it must have looked absolutely bizarre to you for a long time.

Always saw the original SMB's goomba's "stem" as a beak, and it was like a big bird head with feet. I of course know how it's supposed to look like from subsequent games, but I still need to make an effort to see the original sprite correctly. <_<
Mario looks fried out of his mind when he dies in Super Mario World. I've never really understood just what the hell is going on with this animation. I mean, I get it...but I don't get it, y'know?
