I saw it a third way, the tan part under the eyes was a mask or scarf. The official artwork in the manual of Agahnim shows him with a scarf or something around that part of his face, so....

I didn't see the Black Omen as a tower, but what people are seeing as the back of the ship is what I still see as the front. It's a backwards Star Destroyer with a 'head' at the front that looks like a alien from Independence Day.
Also its thrusters are breasts. I dunno. I guess that is the back.

This is hilarious. I had to do some real mental gymnastics to get this to look wrong. I can hardly believe people saw it any other this way, with the head thing as a nose, haha.
The peon portrait in Warcraft 2 threw me off for years. Probably due to his right eye just barely being visible so I hardly even noticed it.
His left ear looked like his left eye and that he was winking or something. The left cheek was some kind of beak and the tusk his smiling mouth.
This one was also pretty laugh out loud funny when it clicked. Once again, I can't imagine how people didn't just see a sad orc.

This is a pretty good explanation for what I think it's really supposed to look like, with a color corrected and somewhat modified sprite to go with it.

Don't know if anyone else saw this one, but growing up I used to think the P-Wing from Mario 3 was a gloved hand pointing.
my siblings and i used to think this was / call it a 'paw'... am i mistaken that it isnt actually referred to as a p-wing within the game?

I do love Shovel Knight, but there's this merchant character, Chester - and I can't quite make out what he's supposed to look like. There's definitely something funky going on with this sprite's face.
Apparently this is what the sprite is supposed to represent... I'm not seeing it.

That makes a bit more sense. The two dots on his smile automatically default to eyes every time I see his sprite

I always thought this Battletoads boss had a fucked up face with bumblebee-like eyes. Since it was just pointed out on AVGN recently that his "left eye" was just a perennially open mouth, I noticed his "right eye" was just his right shoulder pad.
Was I the only one? lol
Anyway, I guess I didn't see due to shitty RF connections back in the day.Pretty much. Just remove those teeth lines from the mouth/tusk.

Always saw the original SMB's goomba's "stem" as a beak, and it was like a big bird head with feet. I of course know how it's supposed to look like from subsequent games, but I still need to make an effort to see the original sprite correctly. <_<
I never even noticed the mushroom. I was thinking the stem was a beak and the whole thing was the head of an eagle.
Mario looks fried out of his mind when he dies in Super Mario World. I've never really understood just what the hell is going on with this animation. I mean, I get it...but I don't get it, y'know?
