Here are all of my stages so far, feedback and constructive criticism welcome:

A Safe Landing for Yoshi -My favorite stage that I've made so far. Tougher stage requiring skilled use of both Yoshi and spin jumping:

I tried my hand at making a difficult cheetah speed level. I didn't think it was /too/ hard but it's sitting at a 1.75% clear rate. Try it maybe, its very short.

I spent a few hours making my first level. I tried to make it in the spirit of the Japanese narrative structure known as Kishōtenketsu, which Miyamoto describes as the way he designs levels. It goes as follows:

Introduction: Introduce the core concept.

Development: Develop the core concept to improve player skill.

Twist: Put a twist on the core concept to challenge and delight.

Conclusion: Assuming mastery of the core concept, create a conclusion that takes everything the player learned and put it to a final test.


For an average Gaffer it's probably not too difficult, but I still think it's harder than it looks at first glance. Anyway let me know what you think.

thanks! did you get any of the invisible blocks? I had coins hinting at where they were but I'm not sure how obvious it was

Just in case people don't realize: the screenshot they take of your level when you save it is wherever you have the camera at that moment. So you can move it around, save, tweak, save, etc until you're happy with the image.

nice, yeah I put a coin above each of those blocks and a second coin above the middle one to indicate there was a hidden block there
 
Fuckin' aye, lot of these levels rock. But should there be a separate topic for levels, with maybe screenshots and codes collected in the OT?

Modbot said since the whole point of the game is making levels it should stay in the OT.

I disagree with whatever mod said that though, its hard to have discussion when 90% of the posts are people sharing levels. I'd rather have the OT be dedicated about level design ideas, impressions/questions about the game, and maybe some cool videos. Stuff like that. Oh well.

If you delete a course that has gotten stars, will you lose your stars gotten progress? I finally got some stars on my level but someone actually found a spot where you can get yourself stuck. I kinda wanna upload a fixed version and delete the old one, but I don't wanna lose the star progress in the play info.
 
Try mine. Feedback and criticism is always welcome on my levels. One of them is in the community showcase in the OP and my other two are in my post history.

Kinsey quite enjoyable water level! Just completed! just one thing in the last part if you swin lower on the screen you almost get no enemies! Making the last bit quite easy before the boss!

The boss was really clever!! Thoug it would be nice to have a mechanism to kill ourselves without restarting, maybe sone piranhas on the higher walls! because if you kill the boss i had to use the system reset!

Will play your others levels later!

you definitely nailed some of that smw feeling but some coherence wouldn't have hurt, i think. it felt like i was going from one element to the next element and i didn't really get the sense of a level. more interconnectedness could really go a long way, i think. the little scenarios themselves were solid, so if you focus on level layout next time, i think you could make something really cool! one more remark: the platform and saw blade at the start could also be timed a little better, you have to wait quite a bit for those elements to enter the playing area.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I think that's the hardest part of designing a level actually, to make it coherent and have a layout which makes sense for the player. As a creator, you have something in your head or on paper which makes sense to you, but that doesn't mean everybody follows your line of thought haha :)

About timing: I actually made the saw go up first so it would line up better, so the player would actually be able to avoid the saw by jumping. Maybe it's better to adjust the rail in such a way the saw and platform intersect at an exact point on the rail.

Played it. I enjoyed the simpleness of the design and it played well. The low jumps can make it tough but it is pretty easy (which isn't a bad thing) :) nice.

Try mine. It has yet to been beaten and I really hope someone can. The ending is great I think.

I'm really disappointed that you can't:
  • Categorize your level
  • Search by name
  • Browse user-made levels in any effective way (theme, background, size, etc.)
  • Link more than one level together

The tools we have are awesome, but it feels like the game could've been so much better had they fleshed it out more. I'm still blown away that the online features are so bare bones in terms of searching for/browsing through levels, especially since the entire game more or less revolves around making, sharing, and playing levels.
 
The easier version of my level has a smaller completion rate than the previous one. Shows what I know lmao.

Gonna play some levels before finishing my second one.

Just tried and complete it!! ;) good level ! Almost died for a little dude on the bridge at the end!! Felt there were a lot of shrooms to assist! Awesome level funny ending!

Fun underground stage. I like the upper route and surprise appearance of creepy Mario. (Or does he just appear automatically on most stages the third time you die?)

There's some room for fun improvisation, shell tricks and technical runs if you enjoy exploring the mechanics through alternative paths and combos. Tried to incorporate a smooth speed run as well, 20 sec or under qualifies.

Amuse at how a couple of people, just browsing Twitter and Miiverse, thought to recreate that terrible underwater level from the NES Ninja Turtles game.

Hit the Sky or Pound the Ground?- Far too short IMO, and I feel the route to get through the stage without the cape could be a bit harder.

Spiny's High and Low- Interesting, but the fire flower at the beginning takes all of the challenge out of the level. What is the point of the enclosed area by the flag? I went through the level as small Mario to get in there, but the brick block was a normal brick block.

Just finished up my first castle level and I'm really pleased with it turned out - it's challenging but I don't think overly so, and I tried to pack in a good number of secrets to find with the tools I have available. If you play it I'd love to know what you think about the difficulty level!

I've had 22 people play the stage I uploaded yesterday and 5 people star it. This seems like a seriously low number of plays. Disappointing.

Don't be sad, I'll get to it eventually, but there's soooo much content out there. Only in this thread, new levels are being posted rampantly

a neat level to look at (ashley <3) but yeah, it is a bit short. i guess you kept it like that to see how it would fair, star-wise. i think you could totally re-use what's there and make a longer 'underground + ghost enemies' level, it's a neat combination

Good level. Beat it and enjoyed every second of it. I carried the p block to the end and I didn't really see the difficult final puzzle.

Any challenging levels out there? I haven't had one stump me yet. And no one has beaten mine lol. Bring it on!!!

I tried to make it longer and maybe this is a false memory but IIRC by the time I finished the subworld and returned to the upper level I didn't have much space left to work with. Am I crazy or does the subworld share part of the allotted space you get? Anyways, I'm very happy you enjoyed that level, everyone at my party for the game last night seemed to like it the most too. :)

I hear ya but the fire flower was there on purpose as I meant this one to be more of a stage for lower skill players. There's no point to the enclosed area by the flag other than just being a chill, alternate room I thought people might like to try should they so wish, kind of line alternate coin areas in the old games. But this stage was made before I had sub worlds unlocked which kind of dinged my options on this one. Thanks for all the feedback. Do you have an easy link where I can check out your stages?

Is playing the 100 Mario challenge on easy the fastest way to unlock new amiibo costumes? I need a special costume for my new course, but this could take a while if I'm unlucky.
 
My second level, using the same formula - introduce a concept at its basic form, then another concept at its basic form, join them together and up the difficulty as you go.

I think it's a bit easier than the other one. 3 hidden 1-ups as well.

First try! It's tricky though, lots and lots of close calls. Got hit in the first jump of the second area but I got cautious after that. Super fun but I think a more adequate end would be before Bowser Jr. - Jr. is a really sudden drop in the difficulty (those blocks even destroy his shells sometimes) and it makes the end a bit anticlimatic.

Really entertaining, enjoyed it all the way through! I'd just do away with the springs when you leave the underwater area because it seems more cheap than anything. I'm also not a fan of underwater areas in general but that was a pretty good one, nice job.

Interesting concept. Not a fan of the goomba rain in the end - but otherwise it's pretty good. Love how as you go you add Goombas in block and giant ones, and it's so satisfying getting the mushroom and breaking those blocks. Good job.

I did not find it too difficult. Actually beat it on my first try. Still I really enjoyed it. It has a nice flow and there are multiple paths and secret areas.
