If a steak NEEDS it then obviously it is a shitty steak. But if people prefer it, well, that's their choice.

I make sure my steak is well done and I use ketchup.

I'm pretty sure that when the OP says "steak sauce" they're specifically referring to A1 and condiments in that vein, not any kind of sauce you might put on a steak.

Yeah, that might be true, but there's a vibe of saucophobia for any kind of sauce here!

If that's what he likes that's what he likes. I'll dip a slice of medium ribeye into a pool of steak sauce from time to time. The combination of flavors is interesting.

Totally agree with OP. I actually raise my eyebrow when the waiter/waitress at a steak house asks if I want A1. "Do I need it?"

If your solution to making the most expensive cut of beef available, cooked in the best way, more interesting is to put A1 on it... No, dude. Just no. Do you pair it with Kool-Aid while you're at it?

I don't even know what A1 sauce is. But I do know that food gets boring the more you eat it, and a sauce can fix that.

Yes, it's a shit steak if it requires steak sauce. However, there are places I'll go where I really want meat that's not factory burger, and I don't quite trust the freshness of the meat or the chef's ability to get it right. Then it might make the "steak" edible.

If it "needs" sauce then yeah, it's not a good steak. If someone "wants" to put it on his or her steak, then whatever. But if someone puts it on a really expensive steak, it's a waste of money because you might as well just use a shitty cut. It'll taste the same. Aside from texture.

What's wrong with ketchup on a hot dog? Hot dogs are usually the shittiest meat just shoved through a grinder and thrown into an intestine. Steaks are not.

I think it's a regional thing. Chicago maybe? Apparently it is part of a list of hot dog etiquette from the National Hot Dog Council. But I just eat hot dogs however, lol.

All a good piece of steak meat requires is salt and pepper. The flavor should come from the meat IMO. If you like your steak well done/charred as my brother does, then every steak will taste pretty similar.

Med-rare to medium depending on who is cooking it.

No sauce, especially not A-1. If you use A-1 you're just eating A-1. A great cut of steak needs no sauce.

Occasionally a nice butter/wine sauce or a subtle teriyaki sauce is welcome, however.

If you order well done or use ketchup you should stick to mcdonalds. Yeah, I said it.

nothing wrong with melted danish blue(literally just melted blue cheese.).

anything else is wrong.

Also... if you pan fry a nice bit of steak with a little olive oil, once the steak is done(medium rare for me), infuse the remaining oil/juices with rosemary, garlic and lemon. Then drizzle over a side salad with parmasean.

Why make a $45 steak taste like a $3 sauce?

A good steak is expensive. The flavor of a good steak is by definition expensive. It usually costs $20 plus for the chance to taste a good steak. Why pass that opportunity up to taste a sauce I can put on anything cheap?

If I want to taste A1 I'll put it on some chicken or pork or cheap steak.

^^^

The only exception to the no sauce rule is a pan sauce that is made with and from the steak.

Nothing that comes out of a bottle is going to improve a quality steak.

True.

A good homemade sauce can enhance flavour, sure, but if it's required for it to be good, then the steak is bad or ruined, probably overcooked.

A good Béarnaise and filet go great together, but that shitty stuff in a bottle?

Nope, nope, nope.

Bernaise with mushrooms and red wine reduction are both great. But if I'm paying $35 or more for a filet mignon you don't defile it with anything I don't tell you to.

Eat whatever you want with Steak. If you want Ketchup, fine with me. If you don't? Who really cares. People should be allowed to eat what they want to eat without being made to feel bad.

I eat Steak with or without sauce, it depends on what mood I'm in and to be honest it's not like it detracts from the favour if you do have sauce of some kind. As long as you don't overdo it with whatever you're eating then it doesn't change the flavour much at all.

I used to always use sauces with my steak at home. Then I had one of my girlfriend's dad's steaks and realized the real issue. However! This doesn't mean steak sauce automatically means the steak is bad. Just like rubs, it can be used for some great extra flavor.

On that note:

Nah man.. going to cover it in Heinz bbq sauce and Montreal steak spice and wash it down with a shit load of beer. I'll leave the food snobbery to the upper classes.

Montreal steak spice AND Montreal steak sauce are god-tier, if we are going non-spicy. Honestly there's not a single cut of meat, cooked in any way that won't taste better with Mtl anything on it.

The best cooked steak of the best cut of meat, on the healthiest meatiest goddamn cow in the world...will taste better with Montreal rub. That's a fact, like gravity and taxes. Vous avez jamais manger de steak, motherfuckers.

A friend and I both got a filet for dinner last night. Without even tasting it he asks for steak sauce. And thats fine with me because he could put mustard on it for all I cared. He just likes the taste of steak sauce. I always heard that a steak that needed steak sauce wasnt a good steak. Its own flavor is what makes it so great and sauces mean you may as well got a hamburger with some A1. I know gaf is full of red meat experts so I decided to pose this question.

I'd agree with the saying.

Your friend should eat what he likes, but also.. he's wasting money buying better steaks to drown their flavor in A-1.

The only time I would ever ruin a steak with any type of sauce is if it was overcooked. That shit taste like tires. I only ever use salt, black pepper, and olive oil. Medium rare. Making my mouth water just thinking of it.

This is the stuff. Use very sparingly and it works miracles. Too much will ruin everything though, same as any seasoning, so be careful.

I can eat and enjoy steak on its own, but I also happen to really enjoy A1. Fuck anybody who tells me how to enjoy food.

A filet takes a fatty sauce well. It's very lean.

A NY Strip or porterhouse need nothing really. The marbling is good enough.

Steak without a good rub/sauce is like spending your life looking out one eye only. I can see just fine! I don't need two eyes lol! Why would I look at this beautiful scenery with two eyes! A beautiful place needs one eye only!

But you are missing out on perfection. There's a reason Montreal steak rub exists. Steak was amazing. But it needed a kick. Something to make it legendary. If spiceless steak was perfect, there'd be no rub.

Open your eyes. Taste steak for the first time. Montreal-steak rubs mofos.

I used to use A1 always but recently had a steak so good (grilled homemade) that the A1 was getting in the way of the flavor of the steak for me.

I've never been to a restaurant where I didn't need A1.
