Missouri collegiate Football team starts strike over racism at school

They want some sort of vetting/veto power in place for the minority population. Given the issues on campus this makes sense.
Some sort of vetting/advise and consent/veto power makes sense, but I don't read the demand that way...
After his removal a new amendment to UM system policies must be established to have all future UM system president and Chancellor positions be selected by a collective of students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds. (my emp.)

Good to see these athletes realize the power they have even in a system setup to exploit them. Props to the original protestors for getting them involved. I hope they continue to hold these guys accountable and not let this move be used to sweep this racism under the rug.

Football players protesting is the easiest and biggest way to get their school to wake the fuck up. College football/NCAA makes tons of money off of the students, so why not throw a wrench into their machine to mess with them?

If the students and players felt uncomfortable, then they had every right to demand change.

OTOH, for people outside of Missouri, you might not know that the football team and the athletic department has been at the center of a lot of rape related charges the last few years. For instance, essentially the "tutoring" program has been used to get women for the players to have sex with.

http://www.themaneater.com/stories/2013/9/18/system-charges-missouri-tutoring-program-sexualize/

And there was a girl, Sasha Courey who killed herself in part because she was raped by MU football players.

It's a shame the football team (and campus) didn't show this same sort of concern then.

On the bright side this guy clearly needed to go.

It just kinda sucks that the public university system in much of the US is so screwed up that it took a football team protesting to change anything. Administrations need to be reformed across the board.

The second part of II seems problematic, there are more stakeholders to those positions than just students, staff, and faculty.

And you're totally right. Though I think in an ideal world presidents would be somehow controlled by faculty.

From what I've heard, hostess programs for recruits can work the same way. It's not "necessarily" that they encourage the girls to hook up, it's that there are some women that get into it for the wrong reasons, and there's really no one stopping them once that happens (as in there should be a code of conduct that says that this is obviously wrong and grounds for being kicked out of the program, but that's usually either not there or not followed).

Well, this protest doesn't respect the right of media access to public space, even student media, like Tim Tai and Mark Schierbecker

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRlRAyulN4o

It basically breaks down to everyone yelling about "don't enter my personal space" while in a gigantic crowd, of which includes a journalism professor (who called for "muscle" to come move the student media) and an assistant director of Greek Life as well. Both employees of the university.

Maybe it's just me, but this seems off.

In all fairness what proof you have the President is a racist POS? He did mishandle things (I agree with the protest by the way), but the racist is the person that drew the swastika or the previous 'calling people crackers on tape' incident at Missouri. Wolfe might be a racist, but your post is a little bit knee jerky.

Also if this team was 8-1 they would of never strike. They are awful this year, and by far their worst season since joining the SEC. Not fool yourself.

Huh?

Yeah this story got really weird this afternoon, with this weird protest thing.

It's typically white media who don't understand the importance of respecting black spaces.

Just a weird turn for things to take.

Hasnt there been allegations that the ”hostesses” are actually prostitutes?

"The most recent racist incident came Oct. 24 when a swastika was drawn with human feces on a college dorm's white wall."

I don't about this particular incident. It sounds like someone just being a drunk jackass rather than a targeted attack of discrimination. Still, good on them. Considering the insane College Football culture in the US, it must take a lot of courage to start a strike.

No, drawing swastikas is never "just" someone being a drunk jackass, it's an asshole conveying something racist.

Never mind this "boys will be boys" crap.

There's been allegations for like decades leveled at tons of successful programs about people hiring prostitutes/strippers for recruits (there's a scandal going on with the Louisville basketball program about it right now), I don't think I've heard a story about the actual hostesses being prostitutes.

Can you even really call it personal space? Aren't they living in a public area with public access?

That video really annoyed me. Poor guy was just trying to do his job.

And with one simple tweet...

Welp, pack it up, everyone. The second white people were blamed for contributing to a systemically unbalanced institution, their message was lost. Someone should give that guy his job back if the protesters are going to be so ignorant about the situation.

Uh...

This sort of thing does not paint the protesters in a positive light.

No. It has nothing to do with white people but with attacking the media. You make an enemy of the media everything changes.

Okay snark aside, I'm genuinely curious: is anyone going to come in here and say that college isn't supposed to be a safe space and these kids are just being exposed to new ideas and shouldn't be so sensitive?

There's a difference between hosting a debate over a controversial issue/inviting a controversial speaker and drawing a swastika out of shit.

You can't be surprised though. They're college kids, an improper and wholly stupid invocation of these sorts of concepts is to be expected. The Journalism professor is an actual surprise.

This doesn't and shouldn't have any bearing on their protest's message. If you can't separate the two, try harder to do so.

Cause media has always been protestor's friends

Neither is having a group of white kids push an Asian student on camera and shout him down whenever he tries to engage in any sort of dialog.

Basket and Click should both be disciplined for their actions.

That said, happy that the protests are forcing the school to make changes.

I'm not even sure what the protesters' message is. When I first heard about this story, with a hunger strike and everything, I expected some truly heinous acts to have prompted such a response. But looking into the background, it seems that what happened was some random drunk dudes wandering through campus shouting some racial slurs, the president's car touched some students who were trying to block its passage, some unknown person made a stupid swastika, and the University of Missouri didn't apologize for Ferguson? Racial slurs and provocative symbols shouldn't be encouraged of course, but these individual events don't seem to point to any institutional problem that would require the university president to grovel on his knees and resign. The response by the students seems wholly disproportionate and irrational. I don't know what they're fighting for, and I'm not sure they know either.

Did you even watch the video?

It was an Asian dude lol.
It doesn't matter if the dude was Asian, Black, White, Hispanic or anything else.

It's a public space. They had no right to try to restrict access to it. They could choose to not comment or give interviews, sure. But pushing people out of the area? Not ok.

When similar events happened at a university I attended, the university president/leadership immediately responded and organized events to promote school unity and combat racism on campus. There needs to be zero-tolerance towards this kind of behavior from university leadership.

Well said. They could have made a real effort to combat racism on campus, while also encouraging faculty, staff, and students to come together. Instead they dug in their heals and tried to ignore it.

I'm so glad I'm out of college now. As what I would admit to be a "bleeding heart" liberal, this stuff disgusts me to no end. People are taking up their personal causes and implementing selfish fascism and mob mentality than actually thinking rationally about anything here.

The professor of mass media at the end of that video literally called for "muscle" to get a guy out of there. This is bat shit insane.

I guess 2015 campus liberals are the new 1990s religious right. They've literally become what they hated.

For whatever reason, someone drawing a swastika in poop really isn't making me feel like supporting the removing of the school president. Yes, I get it upsets people but the implications of removing a selected official because some sick idiot did something gross in the bathroom... doesn't add up to me.

As I have said, Mizzou is generally a school that is tied to racism in general. Combined with the student's experiences, I'm sure there fed up.

late on this, but from that timeline:

“We are boycotting spending money at the Student Center, we are boycotting football games — anything that brings the university extra money, until everything is resolved. If you can’t listen to our voices, you can’t have our dollars," said Storm Ervin, Concerned Student 1950 representative, in an interview.

fuck yes, hit em where it hurts

Wolfe says, "It's — systematic oppression is because you don't believe that you have the equal opportunity for success — "

The crowd of students reacts negatively, and the chatter is mostly inaudible.

Someone in the crowd yells, "Did you just blame us for systematic oppression, Tim Wolfe? Did you just blame black students —" before the video cuts off.

that's exactly what he did, no two ways about it. truly a gross thing to say.

glad dude stepped down, hope that hunger striking student is eating well since

I hope this sparks some more, how about a majority of NCAA football teams strike so they can get paid.

yeah, completely behind this too - whenever i find NFL stuff gross, i'm reminded of the outright exploitation of the NCAA

Why is it that a country built on protesting is so adverse to protesting?

real talk, ive known lots of people who just get physically upset hearing others protesting - sometimes even if its not an issue they seem passionate about. ive come to believe it's got to stem from a deep need for others to respect the status quo - if they're reminded that the rules are largely bullshit & many are being gamed, i figure it's harder to get up & go to a job you hate. that's the best i've surmised, personally.
