NPD Sales Results for October 2015 [Up1: Xbox #1]

I'm talking more about the disparity in time represented. While digital makes up a good amount of sales now I'm not naive enough to think it evens things out. However, combine digital with comparing one week of sales to two and three weeks of sales and the graph seems to lose a fair bit of its effect. I'm not implying Halo 5 is on par with past releases, as I'm sure it is quite a bit lower, but that graph seems rather meaningless when not comparing like scenarios.

Hell, move that bar all the way to 1.5 million if you want.

None of the effect is lost.

Halo 3 had an install base that's comparable to the current XBO install base and still sold 3.3 million at launch. If anything, you just pointed out that the decline really started with Halo 4.

I'm not gonna say that halo has not declined since 3, cause that's just not true. The competition got fierce and halo lost a lot of ground. all I'm saying is that halos fine given the current climate of the fps genre as a whole, and being locked to a single console

Edit: should have said it earlier sorry, physical only, one week for Halo 5, two for Halo 3 and three for the others.

Hm, let's analyse this number and compare to Halo 4.

So Halo 5 did 850k in one week. To make a fair comparison we should multiply by 3 to compare with 4 which had three weeks in its first month. So that gives 2550k copies. According to Ubisoft, digital sales make up 48.3 % of total sales. Taking that into account, the three-week sales correspond to about 5.3 million for 5. That's a huge increase compared to 4. Of course Sony-GAF was concern trolling about the game's potential before release, but we can now see it was all baseless.

High-five Microsoft, for record-breaking sales!

Halo 5: "lol! Digital only counts for 20% at most!"

Uncharted: " I guess most people bought digitally "

And HD remaster of older games is not the same thing as a mainline entry in a franchise that used to have "biggest entertainment medium launch in history" as a selling point.

The fact that you're even attempting to compare the two is telling enough as to it's decline.

Idk, I think it's time to release halo 5 on PC
The series always seemed to be meant for PC anyway, that whole no nonsense arena setting that halo represents just doesn't seem to compare well in today's super hero shooter market (destiny/COD/battlefront, soon OverWatch)

It's not fine when the decline is that steep, any way you slice it.

Oh you sweet summer child.

BO3 is selling around franchise norms and it outpacing it's predecessor. SW is going to make tons of money and have ridiculous legs due to the movie hype. FO4 has already likely doubled, if not tripled H5's total sales by now.

Competitive shooters are still alive and well. Halo on the other hand, might just be dead. Nobody should expect it to have legs well enough to catch any of the big 3 like it would have just 3 years ago.

Well deserved for Microsoft, their efforts on Xbox One have been huge lately, with backward compatibility, new dashboard, windows 10 integrated app and of course exclusive games like Gears, Forza, Halo, Tomb Raider and more coming soon like Quantum Break and Scalebound. I hope they can keep it up, i've no doubts that Microsoft will release other consoles in future, but Xbox One success is critical to have them keep pushing into gaming market, and we need Xbox to exist in order to have a healthy competition and great products for core gaming

Halo 5: "lol! Digital only counts for 20% at most!"

Uncharted: " I guess most people bought digitally "

I've just read this entire thread and nobody has said that. The only fair caveat with Uncharted Collection is it's now the defacto bundle with PS4 which isn't included in October NPD game charts.

However, considering poor PS4 sales this month, I doubt they contributed all that much to the actual collection sales.

With ballooning development costs and the amount of marketing put into Halo, I don't know if it's as cut and dry as that.

But MS were very smart to add microtransactions and get their extra dough there. I'm sure even a small Halo install base will pump money into the game for a while longer

Halo 5: New series entry

UC: remaster of older games.

Apples to oranges.

I'm not comparing the games, or the sales of the games. I'm comparing the reactions to the sales of the games here on Neogaf.

We need a projection of future Halo first week sales based on this current trend. By this rate Halo 8 will sell less than 5k copies.

No it doesn't.

Move that bar from just under the 1 million line to just over the one million line to reflect how many copies the game likely sold in two weeks, including digital. The impact is the same.
Well there it is. And yes, that is a pretty sad day for halo, no matter how much spin you put on it. I think that chart really puts things into perspective.

I don't think people that concern about a remaster even if it is UC .
It doing badly not going to phase people that much comapre to if it was UC4.

Which ones? If you can find more than a small handful of people who seriously argued that Uncharted sales were significantly more digitally-weighted than Halo 5, I would be very surprised.

Uncharted collection bombed! Xbox One #1! the age of Sony is officially over! but seriously amazon chart was completely a different story throughout most of the month. I guess we can't rely on that anymore.

Terrible looking numbers but not surprised with BF around the corner. XB gets the top spot pretty deserved given the nice bundles and Halo coming out.

Reading the Uk thread full of optimism for NPD is pretty hilarious looking at the numbers in hindsight.

I still find the hope of clinging onto digital sales, bundles etc even sweeter to read through as if it wasn't established already in the previous threads on the effects of digital on consoles.

Bravo sir, bravo.

Terrible month.

Seriously cannot believe Halo selling so badly. Not even taken the poor launch and decline in the UK as an indication could prepare for the US numbers.

But it explains the XBone HW sales being tepid. And MS awful (ingenious) PR spin for the title.

The only excuse for the PS4 has got to be the bundles coming this month and people holding off. Because otherwise Sony will be in for a poor Xmas, which I just can't see happening. But then i don't think many would have foreseen such disappointing HW numbers with both Halo and a first ever price drop occurring.

I'm in agreement, I just think it's poor form to put it in a graph, considering people won't even know this because it's listed in French. Just those additions and with digital sales, it makes it look not as bleak, but yeah, damn that's a decline if I've seen one.

I'd say this isn't with the quality of the game, more so the condition of the market.
Yes, how could a french person possibly think to list the caveats of his graph in French!? Clearly it should have been in Chinese, the most spoken language on earth.

We really shouldn't let people who graduated from the school of Greenberg in on Bingo night

Amazon chart is still a good indicator for hardware overall. The XB1 Halo pre order bundles were topping charts in September and August and only got recorded in October.

Same with how Blops III and Star Wars bundles for PS4 having dominated October in anticipation for November. Context is key, have a more discerning eye.

Yeah looking back that UK thread is hilarious. The parallels between the UK and US XB1 market dynamics are in fairness quite similar.

I'm at a loss for words with how digital adding another 1million sales is actually being discussed by some posters in here lol.

Microsoft winning by only 25-30k on Halo week seems like a Sony "win" to me. What do you guys think?

The Gap never closed...

It is a win to Sony, I mean a gap this small during MS wildest card is...nothing

Also Halo numbers are like the worst I have ever seen, no spinning can make them good. Going from a franchise that pulls around 4m a day WW to hovering around 1.5m is the biggest drop I have ever seen, MS can't be too happy about that.

Xbox 360 had roughly an 80 million install base when halo 4 came out and sold 3m in 3 weeks. Xbox one has a 5th of the install base and sells 1mill in 5 days, I think halos fine.

And Xbox 360 had a lower install base than XB1 at the time of Halo 3's launch.

Its funny to see people reveling in numbers for hardware and software, especially if they are not as positive or large as people were expecting.

Who would have thought people would have been delighted with Sony selling less than 300k with a price cut and Halo 5 selling way below previous installments.

Its almost as if some people want certain games / manufacturers to fail . . .

I fell asleep, Halo 5 sold less than 1 million? Dear god that is awful, the game needs some serious bundling before it even hits 5 million LTD, other franchises get away with sub-1 million on NPD because they're global brands, Halo doesn't have that luxury.

PS4 at ~276k is atrocious, why even bother dropping the price? I doubt it would have sold that much less without the price drop, & the BF effect with 100$ less would have been significantly bigger, I know hindsight 20/20 and all that, but that was a useless price drop. It would be a disaster if it doesn't sell 1.2m+ in November.

If you're going to make a point about install bases, what was the install base on the 360 when Halo 3 launched?

People were losing their shit over the low H5 opening sales in the UK thread. Here it seems quite tame.

Well yeah! It sold like 140k in the UK, that's a megaton bomb. At least over here it almost made it to a million. 140k is nothing compared to 1m.

Time to set this one behind us and look toward next months chaotic thread.

Oh its going to be fun seeing the excuses for why systen Y sold less then system Z for November.

Both consoles at $299. Plenty of decent bundles for both systems. No obvious weak link for either side outside of Sony not having a big exclusive I guess.

Both systems should do really well. I am more curious is how close the gap will be then who will sell the most.
