NPD Sales Results for October 2015 [Up1: Xbox #1]

I mostly avoid the prediction league and compsrison stuff (woo Woolly World though) but holy shit this thread has been so awesome. The twists, the turms, the meltdowns, the lack of pie, the presence of bar. Just fantastic.

Kinda happy for Microsoft. They needed this. Being on the back foot has done wonders for their overall approach.

edit. "The Neo GAF" is such a give away. High comedy if George is legit.
They needed to only sell 303k hw and under 1m sw in Halo 5 month?
Wut?

Edit: also, holy crap at NPD George. Please be real.

Serious question, not trying to spin. Is it possible that the PS4 sales slowed down in anticipation of COD and Battlefront bundles. (and Black Friday)

He can't be real, can he????

If so monthlies will be even more fun to read.

Also why are the majority downplaying an X1 win. Geez you'd all be going nuts had it not

Hello again, NeoGAF forums.

Forgive me as I am not familiar with forums, and I am unaware of the conventions of this community. I enjoyed participating in the 'NPD (U.S. Hardware Predictions)' game that the NeoGAF forums offered before the Report was finalized and released. The Neo GAF seems like a fun, intelligent community, so I would like to help the NeoGAF out by disclosing a few immaterial data points from Thursday's Report, although I do not have the time to participate in your 'console war' topics or respond to queries on a regular basis.

The Report in question is The NPD Group's October 2015 U.S. Games Industry Sales (New Physical Channel) Report which was released to its important clients on Thursday. It is my understanding that the NeoGAF community regularly discusses and analyzes U.S. Console Hardware point-of-sale data from these reports and would appreciate further disclosure to be able to use in 'console war' discussion.

Please keep in mind that the October 2015 U.S. Games Industry Sales (New Physical Sales Channel) Report tracks a 4-week month with a Reporting Period of 28 days (10/04/15 through 10/31/15), because The NPD Group follows a traditional 4-4-5 retail calendar. This is to ensure that weekly / quarterly periods can be properly compared relative to performance from previous years.

In Thursday's October 2015 Report, The NPD Group reported that Sony's 'PlayStation 4' U.S. Console Hardware had unit sales of 275K. In the same October 2015 Report, Microsoft's 'Xbox One' U.S. Console Hardware had unit sales of 303K. Also, Nintendo's 'Wii U' U.S. Console Hardware had unit sales of 65K.

You can refer to the following Excel bar graph I produced for the Neo GAF which conveniently contextualizes the above point-of-sale data in reference to data from previous NPD Reports:

3PTMZhz.png

It is important to note that NPD's monthly point-of-sale data reports on U.S. Games Industry sales occurring from new physical purchases at retail which is the largest channel for games sales, but does not represent 100% of industry sales; it does not account for consumer purchases made via digital distribution, used game sales, subscriptions, mobiles, rentals, or social network games. NPD's Games Market Dynamics: U.S. is issued quarterly and is NPD's official estimate of the consumer spend on the industry and it does include estimates of the size of those other monetization methods.

Much appreciated George, we hope you stay here for as long as possible, & don't mind some people that pressure you on sales for every game imaginable.

Sure it's possible but the same could be said about Xbox and tomb raider or Black Friday deals and the backwards compatibility update

Thank you very much. Here on the Neo GAF we appreciate all the disclosure possible to help us fight in the console wars. I lost my brother in the seventh generation console war, and it was important to him that I continue fighting the good fight to help bring my corporation of choice closer to victory. Your contribution to the cause will not soon be forgotten.

I think those are my two least favorite things about NPD threads.

1) People freaking out about charts and not numbers (which we don't get, granted)
2) Arguing over days sales when I think it's probably immaterial for most games given the preorder and frontloading effect of day 1 sales

NPD George dropping the goods...

It will not last long once the NPD ninja's appear. Just cite the numbers next time. Copy/pasting their graphs will attract them like flies.

Amazon chart is still a good indicator for hardware overall. The XB1 Halo pre order bundles were topping charts in September and August and only got recorded in October.

Same with how Blops III and Star Wars bundles for PS4 having dominated October in anticipation for November. Context is key, have a more discerning eye.

Yeah looking back that UK thread is hilarious. The parallels between the UK and US XB1 market dynamics are in fairness quite similar.

I'm at a loss for words with how digital adding another 1million sales is actually being discussed by some posters in here lol.

Oh good point forgot about that. Then I guess Sep is a lock for Sony with COD and SW bundles.

...what the fuck is happening here???

Also thank you, and I really hope you're legit and not going to get in trouble for this.

Wow, the gap was only 28k? lol

Not so great sales for either platform, tbh. Let's see how the holidays turn out. I expect the XBone to outsell the PS4 again. Unless the Star Wars ads/merch/bundles turn the game for Sony.

Whelp, in the end, it was NPD George who saved the day. I knew I had to keep an eye on him! His posts seemed to have very specific info on the numbers and I found it suspicious. But it does make me wonder. What the hell happened to creamsugar?

This post isn't by me, it's by a guy with the same username as me.

NPD George I do appreciate the info. But now we gotta worry about unwanted attention here. Don't risk your job just to provide us with very accurate info

We here at The Neo GAF are proud to have George on the team with us. He speaks to us in a manner never before seen in an NPD thread. Such boldness. Such candor. It's like the PR team from NPD wrote that themselves. Welcome sir.

Bish we need you naaaaooooow! PM dis guy pls. We need the answers Sway!
Screaming at 'Console War' fam lololol

Maybe he's straight from NPD and giving us a bone just to disappear into the wind amd never be seen again.

Seriously doe, this is just a stupid numbers game. Don't risk getting yourself in trouble.

I'm still waiting for a confirmation, but I shall be grateful if he is legit.

Don't see how he save the day since we knew X1 numbers and work out PS4 ones .
What we need is software numbers , which why i hope cream comes back .
