Pachter predicts NX won't release in 2016

“Nintendo’s past practice has been to announce their next generation consoles at E3, and to release them 18 months later. And they typically will have a prototype and a couple of game markups… where you can play something.

“But they take about 18 months, and last I checked we don’t have 18 months until the end of 2016. So, it is less likely that something is coming out in 2016. But, the rumours are that there are NX dev kits out there. We don’t know how long they have been out there, but if the rumour has leaked they have probably been out a couple of months. It is really slightly possible that developers can make something for NX console launch in fall 2016, and do a quality product in 13 – 15 months. Slightly possible.”

He believes that possibility is largely drawn from whether Nintendo NX will have parity with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – not only in relation to technical specification, but also in the relative ease of the development environment to port code.

Pachter continued, “The more the NX looks like a PS4 or Xbox One, the more likely it is that it’s coming out in 2016. The less it looks like a PS4 or Xbox One, the less likely. If it’s a different language, it requires developers to tweak a lot of things from Madden, FIFA, Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto in order to get it ready for NX, 13 months is probably not enough time and it’s probably a 2017 launch.

Nintendo also said their first mobile app would be out this year. And that the New 3DS wouldn't see launch in North America. And that Virtual Boy was a legitimate retail product aimed at consumers.

Nintendo are a bunch of liars.

I guess delays can happen, but I'm pretty sure they're aiming for a 2016 release. If Zelda really is a cross gem release then the "2016" thing they put up should indicate when they hope to release it.

The same could've been said for basically any other console manufacturer before 2005 though (in most cases).

Plus, judging by the rumours, it seems Nintendo is at the same point Microsoft and Sony were with Durango and Orbis around this time of year.

I'll still put my money on 2016. It just seems really apparent their software pipeline on 3DS/WiiU is drying up.

We also need to remember if 3DS is coming to a close (and it looks like it), and they are merging the console/handheld architecture, they will have double the R&D effort and double the development support behind NX.

I'm starting to get tired of hearing about Pachter predicts this and Pachter predicts that.

It always seems so inaccurate and just like "why". I don't see his credibility.

If it doesn't, expect it for March 2017 at the latest. Nintendo can't wait until holidays 2017.

I think it will. Partially because Nintendo really needs to get back into the market with a competitive option. Partially because launching it 2017 or later would concede far too much momentum to the PS4 and X1.

Guess it depends on which market they're chasing, though.

At this point, though, it's barely a joke anymore, merely a statement of the inevitable truth.
I stopped looking at these posts as people thinking they're clever or taking a potshot and started reading them as people who are legit happy to have some clarity of the future. They're much easier to digest that way.

Both PS4 and XB1 were announced and released in the same year.

I think it will be in the power range of PS4 and will release next Christmas. They have to, Sony could be at 50 million sold by then, and Xbox over 15 million.

Michael Pachter's record is worse than the Philadelphia 76ers. The dude seemingly doesn't pick up the most obvious indicators out there when making his predictions.

Companies don't go into mass production early in a year to ship over a year later.

Does it make sense to do so, considering the reports of them beginning production in Q2 2016? And considering that Nintendo probably will want to capitalize the holidays? While his reasons are sound, we're also talking about a different president, who might think this way.

On his second reason, about using different programming language, I don't think that'll be a problem, considering Nintendo did an overhaul with their developer website, so it's clear they are taking that in account to prevent third party problems.

Ha, I just finished watching the GAF documentary that Pachter was in.

I do have to disagree with him on this one probably. I will give him that March 2017 is the absolute deadline for at least one form factor in at least one region, likely the handheld being staggered if at all. But I think a worldwide holiday 2016 is a priority. All the stars seem to be aligning for that to happen. Digital times reporting mass production for Q2, Dragon Quest being on the system and a 2016 launch, Zelda having major cross-gen potential, etc...

On a serious note, Nintendo has done nothing to indicate a 2016 launch outside of "we'll talk about it then" and considering their history of announcing consoles about a year to a year and a half before launch, yeah I doubt it'll release in 2016. I think Nintendo will use the Wii U and 3DS as testbeds for some their ideas for the NX like Nintendo Account and their rewards program and whatnot.

Does it tho?

Nintendo marches to the beat of their own drum for the most part. The drought of Wii U/ 3ds output from them could mean they've been furiously cranking out NX content themselves the past year or so.

i don't think they would let lack of Fifa/ Madden / COD hold them back. Their biggest 3rd party games are stuff like Disney Infinity.
