maybe if someone created a camera equipment thread, equipment questions could be posted in there and this topic could be for sharing work and talking about technique. One can only dream.

I feel like you're over doing it on the contrast bit. With black and white you *do* wanna have dark darks, and bright whites, but you don't really want a lot of the photo to be either over or under exposed. *In general*. Obviously if you're intentionally doing that, it does give it a look. :D
Trust me it was intentional. I'm not that bad at Lightroom. A photographer I know showed me how he tinkers around with his B&W's and I've been experimenting with it every once and a while. It does make for some interesting results.

Saw a pair of herons this morning which was unusual, couldn't get close enough to get terribly sharp photos of them together though, had to crop like crazy, the one bird that stayed about allowed me to get close enough to get some okay shots though.

I tried stitching together a bunch of photos for the first time. I think it worked out alright.

The model I just finished shooting with said she has trouble getting photographers because they either want to do nude work or deal with younger people. God damn that's fucked up.

A lot of people that use that model mayhem site are creeps, it certainly has that reputation at least. If you ever look at the modelling section on craigslist it is the same thing, heaps of guys with super creepy requests.

Question - I started and finished two separate edits of this photo and I like both. I'm not sure which I should go with. Does anybody have suggestions/preferences?
Did you crop out the top of that ear or was that how you shot it? I like the colour version better either way, the eyes are more engaging.

You're back to mostly centering your subject, huh? ;)

Anyway, I think 7606 is the best picture of the lot. It has really nice light.
7836 is probably the best you chose to post here. A bit too centered, and the light is not as warm. And it'S a bit of a clichéd pose. But other than that, not bad either. The two others were you can see her skirt I'm not sure about... But that might also be the dress with it's high starting skirt part that's a bit off for me.
7895 would need more space on the right to work better and perhaps an unslanted horizon. Most of the time you would like your subjects to look either into the picture or at the viewer, but you seldomly want to guide the viewers look outside the picture.

These all look great, really cool lighting on the figures. The dog is cute as a button.

Thank you! Been messing with some different lighting for inside shots, took a few more. Plan to do a self portrait with some unique lighting as soon as I get over this bug I have, I feel terrible right now, haha.

Went to help a friend who was taking car pictures for a client, so I took some few snaps myself, too.
I really like the last pic with the two cars and the city skyline, just a shame that concrete barrier isn't a little lower so you could see more of the buildings too.

Fantastic pics man!

Random question, does your friend have a Miata with Renown/Mazda 787B livery?

I know the guy myself and I could swear he's been up on that rooftop doing a shoot before haha.

On that note, I really need to get access to a rooftop to do a proper shoot with my Miata. It's been a year since I did a shoot with it and it's about time to do another one since I've gotten so much better at this.

Actually, I just need to go out and shoot stuff... been working on other stuff the last few weeks my camera has been sitting inside the bag with a dead batteries lol.

Such a photogenic dog, that one looks great too. The lighting really adds to the figure shots too, I think it is a cool effect.
I am completely obsessed with dog photos. I take pictures of random peoples dogs all the time, they probably make up half of my flickr uploads.

Lol me too. I love all the strays wandering around China. I'm always crawling around on the dirty streets trying to get nice low angle pics of these mutts. Dogs are the best.

I'm always tempted to do that in NYC, but I can't dive that fast (I'm not Solid Snake) and well I'd get stepped on I'm sure of it.

Stuck without transport at the moment but finally managed to persuade a friend that heading into the hills was a good idea today

That is one of the reasons I love having a tilt/flip screen, makes composing low angle shots so much easier.

Yeah we were both talking about that, too. It doesn't help that our skyline is fairly small, too.

Nope, not him. Are you in Houston? This was inside the loop, but it was a parking garage for an apartment, so we had to get access in there.

Shooting in monochrome (versus conversions) has completely changed the way I look at things. Without being able to color I have to focus on shape, texture, DOF, and gradients. I'm taking less photos of people and more of objects.

This is a piece of street art I saw in an alley next to the t-shirt shop featured in Exit Through the Gift Shop. I made a 13" x 19" print on metallic pearl coated paper and it looks absolutely amazing. All of the textures of the wall, the layers of paint, the oversprayed paint, it's all there.

Lol.

Nah, I'm actually in Dallas.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's been in that same exact garage you guys were in, he's been going places as a car photog. I haven't kept in touch with him for a month but last I heard he was planning to be at the Tokyo Auto Salon this weekend, I'll see if he has any pics an post it in Auto-GAF when I get my hands on them.

Yeah, having your viewfinder in BW can make a HUGE difference in the shots you take. It's pretty wild really.

Just being at the right place at the right time. "The more you're taking photos the luckier you get."

The rangefinder window's optical so it's still in color. I did use live view for the photo of the stairs since the perspective needed to be accurate.

It's really weird, having to disregard like 75% of what normally draws my eye.

That's awesome.

I really need to try street photography but I live in the 'burbs and both downtown Dallas and Fort Worth are about half an hour away from me so I'm rarely out there... maybe in a few weeks when I'm scheduled for a few outings in downtown.

Anyway, got this as a souvenir from a buddy... minus Venom's bionic arm of course lol.

Model Mayhem peaked a few years ago. Most of the decent people have moved over to other social media (FB, IG) to fill the purpose MM used to serve.

I could easily write a book on all the stories about creeps models have told me.

Shit, hopefully I can make a name for myself as one of the only people on there that doesn't force or require nude work and then eventually just get off Model Mayhem, yeesh.

So I did a photoshoot yesterday. Realised that my flashes don't work in the freezing cold, way to go, so had to move indoors, but it worked out for the best in the end.

More on my fb page (selfless plug)

What I learned:
shooting cosplay/fashion in cold weather is never a good idea.
having the model lying on the ground is tricky when it comes to the face looking normal, I would suggest using a non-visible pillow or have the model do some exercise of keeping the head off the ground.

This is amazing, Koriandrr! I don't know why, but it reminds me of Tilda Swinton, which is certainly a good thing!

Thank you! I actually think the cosplayer (Charlotron Cosplay) will be super flattered! :D

Cosplay stuff is definitely something I'm interested in doing. Good job.

Thank you! I do see it more or less as fashion photography, as it's mostly about the clothes and hair/makeup rather than anything else. I do some fashion photography as well, this is kind of... expanding the same-ish horizon, in a way.

Same. Will be going to C2E2 here in Chicago in 2 months with some Gaffers, plan to take lots of photos. And dress up myself, haha.

One tip for going to cons with the intention of shooting: check their photography rules. I'm not sure about over there, but some major cons in the UK actually ban you from using external flashes and too much equipment, as it's too crowded as it is and it causes a lot of spaces where people can't move around much (or that's the official statement anyway).

That's how I see it as well, it's just fashion stuff with a different theme to it, but I can't find models that are into cosplay.

"Photo of the guy on the highway overpass holding a heart."

Was that in San Francisco? Whenever I carpool with my brother back from work, I always see a guy dancing around waving a heart.

Good stuff as well.

I would post some of my work, but I don't have it all sorted out to share. I'll definitely get some up here in a bit.

Judging by the focal lengths she shot wide and must've been practically standing on the subject.

Well, keep in mind I also shot with a micro 4/3, but yes, this was shot in a tiny room. I'm not surprised it feels like it, but I'm sure I can 'fake' it better next time, thanks!

I keep forgetting about the crop factor of your camera. At least you could zoom out, with me I would've been screwed until my new lens comes in. I couldn't imagine shooting that stuff at what is essentially 75mm.

wide lens is up next on my list. It's the only thing I'm really missing and it's such a good thing to have, especially for conventions where you lack the space. But honestly, for portraits and 'beauty shots' I really prefer the 75-80mm range (dslr terms). And I absolutely LOVE the sharpness of my 40-150mm (micro terms). It's beautiful :D

Yeah I'm starting to learn how important wider lenses are as well. My new lens is a 2.8 17-50 and I'm contemplating getting Sigma's 1.8 18-35 Art lens as my next lens as well instead of Nikon's 85, cause it'd be really narrow on my camera and I don't always have the space for that. The 1.8 85mm might be my third lens though. Depends on money of course.
