Somebody call VH1: "The Fine Bros" are trying to trademark "reaction videos"

It doesn't have to be a similar case, but more in general, did any big YouTube channel ever anger it's viewers enough to make so many of them unsubscribe?

Not a Youtuber, but Doug Walker/Channel Awesome has had some marvelous breakdowns over time.

For example there was the time that Doug thought people liked him specifically and not the show he put on, and decided to stop doing nostalgia reviews, and hired actors to do some other weird thing about making movies, which had him losing people left and right until he did an about face and I don't know if he's recovered yet.

And how someone over there tries to have an iron fist over the people they team up with and they lost all their best reviewers and had to partner up with a bunch of unknowns.

From their FAQ
Does it cost money to join/license?
There are no upfront costs when you license from us. When you join React World you enter into a revenue share agreement based on actual revenue generated by your videos. There are two kinds of revenue, that which is generally YouTube adsense, and the other is more premium brand deals. If you connect your channel to React World on Youtube, your split is 80% of adsense and 70% of premium brand deals. If you are independent on YouTube or in an MCN, your split is 60% of adsense and 50% of premium brand deals.

Nah, i think its gonna have to go a little lower. Then it would only have lost 90,000. They could make that back in a couple weeks. I think its gonna have to lose something more significant like 300,000 or something before they're convinced to reverse.

Look at the number of subscribers.

look at the average number of views each video has.

Consider the ration between the two.

That is the number you look at for engagement.

Now take a look at how far sub numbers have fallen - those are the users who engage.

This will give you a more apt metric for how much the sub drops affect the channel. If they lose 1m subs and their average views per video is 4m - that's a 25% drop. That's huge.

That was so painful. I love Nostalgia Critic but every time he isn't "in character" there's absolutely nothing there for me. Just stick to the thing people like.
NC in general has become a bit too "internet" for me at times but his Mortal Kombat reviews are awesome and I still try to watch all his reviews.

how is it a sweet deal? they take a high percentage of money and won't even let you use their logos/other production media..

they like to use the analogy of becoming a burger king franchisee, but Burger King lets franchises use their logos and media

anyone defending these jokers is a fool

It kind of feels like the people who commission art or web design and withhold payment and try to say "but you're being paid in exposure! Everyone will see your work and you'll get famous and loaded down with other commission work! That's as good as being paid!"

Game Grumps lost a lot of subscribers the day they abruptly replaced Jontron with Danny, and introduced their new show with Ross.

Of course, that was more of a knee-jerk thing and people came around when they found out that Danny was actually really funny.

I've had to stop watching Nostalgia Critic. The newer ones are always full of long, unfunny sketches (last I saw). Guess he just wanted to keep the actors around. As much as I like Doug's opinions, it's the bad films that are funny rather than him

What's Magnus done?

No idea, we're going to find out in the new video.

Right now I'm a little anxious to get it over with because I like both Grade and Tyrone. I'm not subbed to Tyrone though cuz he's just as guilty of doing what Jinx and CJ do.

I'll admit I'm getting a bit of Schadenfreude from the backlash over this. I think this whole thing is a textbook example on how to not capitalize on your success.

I watch Game Historian, LoadingReadyRun, Extra Credits/Extra History, and a couple other channels.

If you're into Gaming channels, then I highly recommend Ahoy - he makes mini-documentaries about a number of gaming-related topics and has a perfect voice for narration. His most recent video about DOOM is one of his longest and took around two months to make. It's one of his best in my opinion. He also never shoves his face in front of the camera, in fact I don't think he's ever made an appearance in any of his videos.

Due to some bad stream management, Rooster Teeth's youtube channel lost around 100,000 subscribers in about three days last August. I remember watching their live stats go down about 2 subscribers every second for awhile, and I think they lost around 39,000 subs in one day.

Also, interestingly enough, nobody at RT seemed to give a damn at all. Which makes me think that, unless this level of unsubscribing continues for an extended period of time, it's not that big of a deal.

I watch Tyrone's videos every now and then so I was wondering what he'd done. Guess I'll wait for the video.

Neat, thanks for the rec. Will check it out.

RT have their own website hosting videos, as well as subscriber revenue outside of YouTube though, so in reality it probably means a hell of a lot less to them than it does to the average Youtuber.

I'm curious as well. Magnus asked him what was up and he said to just wait until next week.
I think Tyrone making a video first and wondering why Grade was mad at him due to a tweet Grade made is kinda weird. Why would he do that? I don't think it's cuz Magnus admires Grade so much that he hurt his feelings with what Grade tweeted about him. Just seems out of character.

Why is there no Boycott campaign ?

I don't think that losing 1M subscribers is going to hurt them that much. 99% of their audience is kids/teenagers who don't care about this. These greedy motherfuckers will keep on making bank. I wish there was a full scale boycott campaign.

Wow, wtf at that "prank".
Checked out the channels subscriber statistics and there was indeed an impact, but a very small one.

Yeah that's a good point, but don't such companies/individuals have advisors, media managers or someone else who should prevent something like this?

either those advisors/media managers are not grounded in reality as well...or they are scared to go against the grain/say No/Speak up and against. (The latter being the most likely and the most common from what I've seen while working within big corporations)

Can I use the FBE company logos, and/or the specific show logos in my shows?

One of the benefits of joining React World is that we provide you with your own customizable set of graphics to use in your shows so you can put your own stamp on your work. This includes opening title cards, in-video graphics like lower thirds and name tags, and end slates. These graphics are designed specifically to be used with all your React World licensed shows and are fully customizable. Please refrain from using the official FBE company logo and/or specific FBE company show logos in any aspect of your project, including (but not limited to) videos, social media promotion, websites, channel branding etc.

so what are people licensing then? Like I said earlier, their BK franchise analogy is fucking horse shit. This would be like if I paid BK to be a franchise owner but they wouldn't let me use the BK logo or call my signature burger The Whopper... da fuq?

I agree. I mean the tweet was pretty harsh but Magnus' thing is to not pay attention to negative remarks.

To make a whole video out of it is not what Tyrone usually does.

The Burger King analogy is stupid.
What the Fine Brothers proposed was like:

You can either license your Burgershop with us and pay us money ... but you can't use our name and logo or anything affiliated with us.
Or you can open your own burgershop .. which our lawyers will take down.

This is self-regulation at its finest.

I wish it could happen to someone of greater consequence than a "react" YouTube channel, but hey. Take what you can get.

And it is pretty satisfying to see this all play out.

I thought that was the whole point of licensing the react name. Everybody gets a zip file with all the logo and intro stuff. How did they think this was a good idea?

There are very few gems on YouTube now. It's kinda depressing.

That's why I instantly liked H3H3, the slapdash production - just a snarky guy at a desk with a video running, and his wife filming him. Not even a tripod! Really reminded me of the early days of YouTube.

I feel like stuff is getting more and more "produced" right now, with many channels just pumping out content without any regards to quality (Let's Play Happy Wheels season 7 part 53), prank videos, "reaction" videos where a guy has other peoples videos running and basically just sits there and stares into the camera, haul videos, hundreds of hours of ASMR whisper shit, Minecraft till it comes out your ears...

I think Vine is a source of great content, but even that is being ripped and smashed into BEST VINES MIXXX where unrelated people can earn money by, ahem, "aggregating" content.

What annoys me the most is that big brands can afford to smack small producers around as they please with arbitrary strikes, while on the other hand actual content stealing is alive and well (SoFloAntonio on Facebook, @fatjew on Twitter, Jinx on YouTube to name just a couple of people I learned about in the last few weeks) and the big sites don't seem to care at all.

I have the impression that the atmosphere of content on the internet is getting more and more cutthroat, with people stealing content left and right in the most arrogant way, and big sites trying to grow with lowest common denominator click bait and being able to nuke small guys as they please.

Seriously. This is a total sham.

Just the React World-program in of itself is pathetic, bu I truly have no words to describe my reaction uhh...observatory feelings(?) concerning the condescension, entitlement and arrogance in both the original presentation and in the "Update"-video.

Yeah, I suppose that's fair. And RT's issue was confined to that specific weekend. Fine Bros don't have the knowledge that their problem will just go away on Tuesday like RT did. They probably are sweating it a little more than I first thought.

We should take all those unsubscriptions and subscribe to some actual good youtube channels. I'm open to suggestions.
