Gotta give them credit, the fine bros. have inspired some great content these last couple of days AND have made a countdown very fun to watch.

Kudos.

Yeah, it's not the numbers but the hype surrounding it. The more videos pop up criticising the fine bros, the more effect it will have. I mean, these are the first results I get searching for "fine bros" on youtube:

They have to lose some sponsors right?

Thinking about it more, n terms of what hurts the Fine Bros. the most, it's that they might not get future branded content or advertorial opportunities. That's certainly where they make most of their money (and where most big Youtubers do) so it might not be something that's evident to outside viewers for a little while how big or small an impact this whole shebang ends up having.

Why they decided to go public with this before they had the trademarks is beyond me, unless they really believed their own press releases.

Mostly what this blowup has shown in that the Fine Bros. could never effectively prosecute their trademark protection as soon as it became common knowledge. I mean all these prominent and not-so-prominent people using the "Reacts to" verbiage... if the Fine Bros. don't aggressively go after these people then their trademark is diluted and they're at risk of losing it. But takedowns would only exacerbate the Streisand effect they've created.

I guess it's true...once you become wealthy it becomes like a sickness and you just feel the need to become even more wealthy in any way possible.

When I checked yesterday for a prolonged period of time it was 170-180.

yesterday around this time, they had lost 51k subscribers (in total from the start of this whole shitstorm).

Today, just today, they've lost 62k so far already. It's actually faster. This is gaining traction because more and more people are making videos weighing in on the matter.

and good to see 2 youtubers that have worked with them already talking about it, I didn't expect that and I'm glad to be wrong.

Anyone want an avatar? Saw this on twitter.

I rather have a real cunt as an avatar and get banned.

putting all the legal/moral/youguysaredicks issues aside....

its just beyond pathetic how hard these guys are clinging to such a simple idea that isnt even clever because of a lack of creativity in coming up with a new idea

EDIT: beyond the creativity required to say "hey how bout instead of a new idea we just try and fuck everyone over", that is

the craziest thing to me is not only did they register "react" but also "opinions"

whatever you do, make sure you don't make any youtube videos where you react or have opinions about something

This also applies to a bunch of other Fine Bros. video templates, including “Do They Know It,” “People Vs Food,” “Lyric Breakdown,” “Try Not to Smile or Laugh,” “Opinions,” and “People Vs Technology.” And the Fines have acquired the trademarks to go with them: Yes, they trademarked “React” and “Opinions” for the YouTube video market.

WTF

What did I just watch?

How did they get so popular?

I don't understand why people would want to watch other people reacting to something, it just seems pointless to me, it is neither entertaining (to me at least) & you do not learn anything either, there is so much great content on-line & on YouTube where you will either actually be entertained (or laugh) or take something away from it & actually learn something.

It is just burning time.

The reactions were novel enough, particularly in the collected format of a group of individuals reacting, rather just one person. I never actively followed them, but they worked as an occasional curiosity if guided towards them (though sometimes the implicit 'joke' in some of the videos felt off).

Been interesting to watch things cascade the last few days though. They're almost 200k down in subscribers - interesting to see if this grows exponentially, or calms down after the initial furore.

Another straightforward, level-headed breakdown from Foldable Human

Exactly!

Hell, I still have a reaction video of "2 Girls 1 Finger" with me and my brother on my channel. And when I think "reaction" videos, my mind goes back to when YouTube was flooded with everyone and their mom (literally, lol) reacting to the 2 girls 1 cup video.

"If someone had copy written jumpcuts, we'd all be fucked"

She goin in!

FineBros need to just suck it up and understand that reacting to shit is too fucking general of an idea to own.

I was wondering if anyone knew any shows that use straight on reactions that started before the FineBros?
For example here is a fully formated/edited E3 reaction video 5 months before the first Kids React. (The creator is actually tweeting about this now which is how I found this out).

I know the thread title references VH1, but they weren't live reactions and most YouTube stuff before this were home movies not actual "shows". Thinking about it is pretty interesting.

AH! They look like babies! Never seen any of their earlier stuff before.

Honestly I'm a little surprised that so many people within hours of the announcement realized they could withdraw their support by unsubscribing. I was never on that list but I feel like it's not something that would immediately occur to me to do.

I think the first big reaction video meme was for 2 Girls 1 Cup.

You are right, but like I said none of those were really "Shows" in that they were edited and branded and the like. But in the YouTube generation of the internet, shock videos were probably the earliest type of of straight "watching one video to make another" kinda thing.

Kinda shows the Power of the Internet nowadays.

One mishap and irreversible damage.

I don't know if this qualified as a "mishap".

It's not like they came out and said, sorry we were advised by a close attorney friend to trademark our react videos to protect our brand. That would have been a mishap.

Feel free to correct me if I got something wrong.

I think they probably meant misstep.
