GameTrailers to close after 13 years

I'm glad at least a couple people here are familiar with the idea of context.

The context didn't really call for his response though. Regardless of his intentions, he was asking for money then and there to save the GT crew without confirmation of consent from said crew.

It can easily be taken both ways. Not hating on Shane, but it's not irrational to raise an eyebrow.

Hey Blood, is there any way to restore IW archive with all episodes or they are lost forever? Thank god there's Youtube channel from which we can download almost all of the shows now, but IW archive is nowhere to be found unfortunately, even on the main GT site :-(

With the Defy migration in November, they couldn't afford to host the entire database from Viacom. Along with user movies, low-traffic trailers, and some third party content, I am fairly sure that only a select number of IW episodes were transferred.

Shane was directly responding to numerous people in the chat asking/demanding that he hire the GT guys to do SIFTD content. That's his response, because he doesn't have the money to hire them without substantially more subscribers to provide capital for it. It wasn't a sales pitch, it was his answer to a question.

Thanks for this. I missed the show.

Man, it feels so good to see Damiani and Speer again.

Damn, that's a bummer.

Sorry, but it's funny to me that you say that about someone who was actually on the show.

Everyone.

First it's important to realize it's actually expensive to start from nothing, and the current editorial staff at GT is composed of people who are not web designers.

I'd do it for free. Holler at me Bloodworth.

(Btw, I think you'd be surprised at how cheaply you can bootstrap up a basic site these days.)

(Also. The siftd.net website looks like pure gash.)

Siftd does have a very specific look, but it also has most of the UX is locked behind a paywall

What I'm saying is that we should just keep waiting for updates from the official GT crew and see what they decide to do before accepting proposals from other people.

The Patreon + advertisement/views + Sponsorship business is not "unfeasible" like some people try to make us believe.
Of course that business model will be harder, no one is saying that it won't be.
But in the end it is very possible to maintain a medium-size crew with the revenue from that type of business.
Posting videos on YouTube or creating a website is also not impossible at all.
Of course you won't have a super fancy website if you don't invest in it but what most people want and would pay for is exclusive :p content, if they can deliver, they will get tons of support.

Easy as that. So Yes, I don't believe when people say that it's not possible.
Anything is possible. You just have to believe, just take a look at the neoGAF logo ;)

Man... I really want these guys to do their own thing that doesn't involve Shane. That guy was the worst. I can rememeber him bullying other people all the time, and he did it in the most annoying way. By talking over people. By repeating the same arguments. Dismissing arguments out of hand. He was shrill and unbearable. Having read Blood's post it seems like people respected him, that is great, but I thought GT was WAY better after he left.

Isn't archive.org the same thing?

Archive Team are separate from archive.org (Internet Archive) but virtually all the stuff they archive gets uploaded to archive.org. They're a loose group of archivists that step in regularly to save dying sites and also help archive healthy ones in the meantime, too.

They've helped me save sites before, and are an awesome bunch. They have an ArchiveBot where users can submit sites/pages to be archived automatically and then uploaded to archive.org.

That's very sad news.

I've so many good memories associated with IW (it was my first gaming podcast I was listening/watching every week till the very end of it) and now I (and a lot of other people) can't watch old episodes because Defy couldn't afford to host the entire archive. *sigh* What a bunch of.... bad, stupid and ignorant people who do not realize the importance of such content (and GT as a whole) for so many around the world.

Marcus already said everything that needs to be said about MTV, Viacom and Defy in its own podcast, but I honestly can't imagine how hard it was for you guys to get things done in such a horrible corporate environment for so many years. But all of this is making your work even more valuable to me and to everyone here, so a HUGE thanks to all of you for everything that you've done, It was an adventure! All of you guys deserve a lot more than what happened on Monday this week (and after the Defy migration) and I wish the best of luck to all of you!

Marcus as in Beer? If so, where can I watch his podcast?

While personally very sad about this, I do find it bit of a waste that so much is lost. These kinds of videos are always really interesting time capsules of the thoughts of people at that time of something that can change over the years. Shame really.

I don't think so. I don't trust in Defy that much, that's why I'm currently downloading every video I can from that channel.

Well, I'm downloading those two vids then.

SIFTD is premium content only? you can't listen or watch any of it for free? no wonder I never found it on iTunes.

You can see Pachter Factor on a one week delay for free on YouTube, since Pachter put that as a stipulation for doing that show.

They also have a few old game evals and GameFace uploads on YouTube.

They have a weekly Twitch show/podcast, I think on Thursdays... maybe? I catch it randomly, but the catch is that they don't have it on their past broadcasts on Twitch, only a private Youtube version which is given to Siftd subs.

Marcus Beer (aka "annoyed gamer") used to be on it, which was good to have opposing views... then around E3 he fucked off, nothing was really known. Seemed like he bailed.

So glad that Pop Fiction is being preserved. That show was really well done and seemed to have a lot of love put into it.

Does anyone know what it's fate currently is? I tweeted Damiani about this but was unsure if when he left GT if he had to sign some NDA agreement.

Does GT/Defy own Pop Fiction? Is Damiani not allowed to do them on his own?

Blood may have an idea of the ownership of these shows.

I might just do $30 tier. I do miss listening to Shane rant.
There's at least the 3 day trial option. Might as well take advantage of it to see if you like what you see from the site.

Thanks. I wasn't the biggest fan of his, but it's great to hear from his perspective.

Like many in here, I'm all for getting ex-GTers together and forming a Patreon, which could no doubt be successful, BUT I think some people here need to prepare for the situation where the entire crew won't be able to come back.
I don't know much about the LA realty situation but I'm willing to bet office space is expensive, so to start with they'll need to work out of a basement, garage, spare room, wherever if possible. That would allow them to save a ton of money, which will be necessary when they'll need to use most of the first month's Patreon money on equipment... computers, cameras, microphones, unless any of the team members have some of their own equipment they can get by on. This is why I think it's vital that they start soon, they no doubt (hopefully) got some decent severance packages that can get them by for the next few months in terms of rent, groceries, living expenses, etc, the more equipment, businesses expenses, and, if they need it, office space, they can muster together.
After all that is said and done, I don't see how you can bring in the whole crew... there was, what 9 people there at the end? That's a lot of monthly salaries you need to pay for. I know it sucks and hopefully they can grow and bring on more ex-GT people in the future. Right off the bat they'll need to bring in the most popular people that bring them the most attention. Kyle would be great, so would Brandon or Blood (they'd also help in terms of leadership), Huber as well after E3 last year and the success of Huber Hype. People who can fill multiple roles will be good too, someone like Ian can be on camera and can also edit, so he'd be a big asset. Their first few projects should be spiritual successors to Final Bosman, GT Time, Huber Hype, Man Ups, etc assuming the people who produced those shows join.
Another reason I think it's vital that they start soon if they choose to go this route, is right now, GT is on everyone's minds, they could really use that attention. The internet moves on from things quickly, if they wait too long that could hurt things.
Just my two cents.

First it's important to realize it's actually expensive to start from nothing, and the current editorial staff at GT is composed of people who are not web designers.

I'd like to point out that it's 2016, having a versatile website is completely unnecessary these days. Have a website with an "about us" section, with all the YouTube videos embedded, anything beyond that isn't needed, at least not at first. But you definitely do not need a webdesigner.
