Man, if those three are forgotten then what does that make Jun considering you left her out? lol

God I really want Moe and Reiji in a proper game

I'll be honest, I did forget Jun...and here's Sinobu for good measure.

I almost forgot about Miu in the initial post - I'm pretty much firmly in the "Give me Moe and Reiji" camp.

Sorry - wasn't clear - I won't try to approach it seriously yet, just want to dive into the games and see what the world, characters, and stories are all about since the characters have always looked so cool (I always drooled over the idea of having a NeoGeo since EGM constantly did articles about the games). Would solely be single player stuff, doing arcade mode runs. Start with XIII and work backwards? Garou? back to the beginnings with AoF or FF?

The anniversary site is a pretty good place to start: http://kofaniv.snkplaymore.co.jp/english/index.html

For each game with an actual story (all but 98, 2002 and XII) there's a section with the general backstory for the individual game, as well as team/character-specific stories.

It's still a pretty big body of work which draws a lot from the series that precede KoF, like Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting - those are in a separate timeline from KoF, but their events and characters are still occasionally referenced in KoF (especially in XIII's pre-match dialogs).
You can find about that timeline and its events here: http://meh.brpxqzme.net/timeline.html

Other than that there aren't major unified resources, especially official ones in English, but between those 2 sites and the SNK wiki you can still discover a lot - just check on characters you like and work from there, not unlike looking into comics (KoF pretty much works on comic book time, unlike the series that it references). Also, feel free to ask about any specifics here.

This, someone practicing a form of traditional martial would be great.

Yeah. About the only one I wouldn't necessarily need to see come back any time soon is Momoko.

How, in a universe where the likes of Bob Wilson and Richard Meyer exist, did we get a new Capoeira user who is NOT related to them at all, and ended up being another magical psychic girl who has a Kamehameha-like move in her moveset?

If Bob or Richard weren't possibilities, I was expecting someone more like Pupa (Rage of the Dragons), at best...

I think they design her to play up the contrast between her more physical multi-part moves and their short range, and her huge Leader DM beam attack.

With the Leader system gone (and tag teams so far don't apply to this game), I don't see her returning anytime soon.

Pupa is the best if you understand portuguese.
"QUEIXADAAA"
"BENÇÃO"

Can't dislike a character that throws mechanic tools instead of having fireballs too.

Kof has so many awesome characters that unless EVERYONE is in the game there will be always many people complaining about this or that character missing.

I want Shingo, Yamazaki and (playable)Krizalid.

Really happy Clark doesn't look like a super roided monster.

Agreed, Ralf too. They looked atrocious in both KOF XII/KOF XIII, like they were on steroids or something.

Glad that they're looking like they were back with KOF '94 to KOF XI. Let's hope that they also make Athena, Mai & Yuri look more superior.

I don't recall her placing too highly on popularity lists, either, so it's likely a safe bet that she won't be a priority to be bought back. If the devs really wanted to keep her around, they probably would have forced the "Neo Psycho Soldiers" angle for XII and XIII, instead of bringing Chin right back on to restore the status quo.

They did make a XII-style stripe of her at one point though - I think that was on the XIII dev blog and maybe the card for the mobile version of the game?

So Art of Fighting team will be Ryu and Robert. But will the third member be Yuri or Takuma? Seeing her not in the Women's Team makes me worry!

Card I think I vaguely remember, at least.

Seems like a great problem to have.
It is, but I can certainly sympathize.

Especially when you are a fan of the likes of the Sports Team or New Face/Orochi Team, who haven't had a "new" game appearance in well over a decade, each. Timey-wimey paradoxes or whatever shenanigans Mature and Vice continue to use to cheat death, they'll have to figure out a means to get these guys back in the game, sooner or later~!

I just think it's odd there is no Elisabeth Team. They are basically the secondary protagonists of the ash saga. I dont care about them but I thought they would become series regulars.

What the fuck could Angel be doing now that she isn't a NESTS Agent anymore?

Very curious to see if there's bad blood between her and the K'Team ...or maybe she likes sexy wrestlers like Ramon and the KING OF DINOSAURS

Angel could have been doing her own thing
Doesnt sound like something hard to work out

Angel's like, crazy though I thought. Didn't she nearly kill Foxy?

Still it'd be nice if she's just trying to have a normal life. I mean it's not as if K' Team did anything in Ash Saga.

Well she IS supposed to be based off of FLCL's Haruko

I wish for World Heroes and Fighters History characters.

Fighters History is a Data East game, and the right seem to be a bit of a mess right now - I'm not expecting SNKP to cover the expense to license them anytime soon (although a role in a NGBC2 down the line would be nice).

I just think it's odd there is no Elisabeth Team. They are basically the secondary protagonists of the ash saga. I dont care about them but I thought they would become series regulars.

Maybe they wanted to avoid the K' problem, where a former protagonist has basically nothing to do in a story not about them.

I could imagine Shen and Duo Lon coming back later for a likely China-related story, and maybe Elisabeth teaming up with King someday.

Maybe the time paradox at the end of the XIII story means that K9999 never existed and she never got to work for NESTS, so she just sticks to wrestling and found herself some peers.

Reiji and Gai... never to be seen again ;(

Gai has more of a chance though - it doesn't seem that hard to adapt a Joe Higashi model into a Gai Tendo.

Reiji is in more of a pickle, but he'd be interesting to see back, Chizuru is an interesting character, and I like the idea of shedding more light on her outside Orochi-related antics, which would naturally lead to Reiji as something of an entourage.

Angel's like, crazy though I thought. Didn't she nearly kill Foxy?

Nope:

This is not a dish but I'm interested in more fighting games now. I would like to know what it is that appeals so much to fans of King of Fighters? What are the main forces of the series? What sets it apart from the competition? I'm sincerely just curious. :)

Yeah I completely forgot about XIII's ending, good.

So wouldn't that leave her inhuman strength unexplained? Would she just be like Hinako then?

For me, the differences in the jump mechanics, chaining/rushing attacks, multiple play-styles in EX/Adv, the continuous story line and the fact that the cast is incredibly grounded in reality to make them very believable, layered characters. There isn't an inherently evil figure in the antagonists outside of Rugal. The Orochi is portrayed as evil, but really they're doing their jobs to maintain order. It's only until NESTS and Ash is where we see some genuine assholes.

Every character has their own spotlight. The AoF/FF/Psycho Soldiers/Ikari cast tell their stories in their games, new characters have their own individual strifes and conflicts to work out, etc.

IT's just really good to follow if you're into fighting game lore, and so mechanically differnt from a lot of other games.

For me, and that's probably a bad answer because it has nothing to do with the gameplay, it's the characters. There are some bad ones of course, but most of 'em are just awesome.
And the KOF games always felt really good. I can't really explain it. I suck at KOF, more than i suck at Street Fighter and i actually hate some the weird inputs that King of Fighters uses, but the fighting feels so good.

How about we use a recent example?

Skullgirls was made on a tight budget, the team often digging into their own funds and eating ramen out of cups to get it done. The thing they didn't compromise on was making hand-drawn, high quality 2D animation. Their technique was far cheaper than SNK's pixel art method for KOF12/13.

For that game, it was about 250,000 dollars apiece per character. That game has 14 characters.

Not even taking the actual development of the game into account, JUST CHARACTERS - this means that if time wasn't an issue either - for 50 characters, that's a 12.5 million dollar budget just for character creation on the level of Skullgirls, with the cast number of a classic KOF.

My point is that time is the limiting factor here, not money IMO. People throw out "its cheaper to go 3D" all the time like its gospel as if a character done in 3D costs 100k but the same character done in 2D would costs 200k (arbitrary numbers, bear with me). The sense I've gotten from hearing about the budgets of other 3D games and reading about game development over the years is that a statement like that is a gross simplification. 3D has advantages that has encouraged its proliferation at the expense of 2D but just a blanket statement of "its cheaper" I don't really think does the situation justice.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert. This is just the understanding I've garnered after reading up on the subject over the years.

As an aside, I wouldn't consider 12.5 million a prohibitively large budget for a fighting game of KOF's legacy and stature (a mid-tier title in the grand scheme of things) but I admit to not having access to SNK's account books.

I think this is a solid roster... and there's always the opportunity for DLC. I always main the fatal fury team so im good but i would love to see Rugal show up as a secret character... one of my favorite designs... a complete 90's throwback villian out of a karate flix.

Happy about Vice, Tizoc (DINO Tizoc holy shit!!!), Geese, and Tung making the list.

Sad there's no Shermie but she seems to rarely make the cut anyway, Does anyone know if she's still in whatever canon KOF has now? I kinda fell off after KOF 2003.

This topic is proof that no matter the character count people will always ask for someone else, asking for DLC characters no less and the game isn't even out yet. I mean sure I love blue mary and vanessa(One of my favorite characters) but come on now unless you only liked KOF from 2000 upwards you should already have had favorites by now. I'm missing a lot of favorites but that's only because snk has a lot of damn characters I like.

Personally I want to see some of these new characters already. Yes seeing old one's are nice but since I know the leaked list I want to see how the new guys look.

King of Dinosaurs screams "Our human characters don't look too good so for the new character here's a guy with no human face instead".

You must be new to snk games? Cause I think just about everyone that remembers tizoc knew from first glance that that was him.

I was so mind blown that the first thing shown to me in the bloody trailer is a T-Rex suplexing people that it took me a while until I accepted that my Birdman homie went full Dino.

Shame, thought the SNKP tweet with FH cover was a hint.

No Ash either. Maybe we'll get them as DLC.

Ash retconned himself to non-existance, lol.

Really, the way they handle Tung Fu Rue is one of the things I'm most looking forward to. There's not many fully-transforming fighting in any current big fighter (Necalli's super hair is the closest?), and there especially few such beings in 3D graphic games. Anything they do with his dual sides (transformation, beastly limbs only, Stand-like apparition) should end up pretty fresh and unique to this game.

If there's a new black guy somewhere (since no Seth, Lucky, or Heavy D!), I hope he's not on the Prison team, heh. A female prisoner could be interesting. I wouldn't be mad if it turned out to be a Yamazaki-like guy though.

A China Team with a woman with a Sichuan style mask? Sounds like someone that could have relation to Lee Pai Long. Another Idol singer being in the game sounds like a potential new rival / friend to Athena.

Do we still expect the new hero to have an alternate color flame motif, like past heroes? K' has darkness within his flames, Ash had Green Flames.. what could be next? Yellow? Blue? A whole new element?

I really do like how Mechanical Maxima's over-armor is here. Totally channeling Rocky, which would make a good alt costume (again, he had a color in Maximum Impact):

180px-Rocky-2000.gif

I also notice how his arm gauntlets open up when performing a VAPUUUURRR KANNUNN. On that note, K' and Kula also have crazy-detailed gloves on now, which are unique from each other. K' look as if his have heat-escapes on the knuckles, whereas Kula's look thick and mechanical on both sides, with lots of plating and softer ribbed spots in between.

From the descriptions, the south american boxer sounds like he is missing an arm and has some metal one instead .
Tizoc was called Griffon mask in the original japanese release, so I guess changing names and masks is his gimmick lol.
Also kinda curious about the part when Ralf is moving forward through the flames... might be his climax move ? I'd be nice if he summoned the metal slug for a cannon attack :)

It's be really interesting to see how this new Hero team works out. Or if the new characters fill any spaces we don't have any / many characters filling, yet.

For the Ralf moving in flames, I keep imagining him attacking with a grand Bareback Vulcan style DM, with the last hit blowing away everything in the area. From the flames of total destruction, he's the only thing that "survived", walking out with that "Mission accomplished!" mumble.

It is pretty weird, because that single moment looks more like something out of a Blazblue Astral, rather than KoF, or even Street Fighter V.

From SRK:

This, someone practicing a form of traditional martial would be great. They had a chance with Shion in KOFXI but ended up making him a dude for some reason.

Those retrofit designs are really quite a nice way to look at where we are now. Leona's shirt not being as low-cut is a weird omission. The new designs are so busy in comparison, but that's part of this game's personal style.

I just think it's odd there is no Elisabeth Team. They are basically the secondary protagonists of the ash saga. I dont care about them but I thought they would become series regulars.

It's very similar to how the Orochi team disappeared after their Saga was complete. I like the fact they're making Ash's sacrifice mean something, for now. If he just reappeared in story instantly, the weight of what occurred in XIII would diminish a lot.

I wouldn't mind him, and those involved with him, appearing in the 2nd or 3rd part of this saga. Even after he is erased, those close to him seem to have lingering fragments of memories.

So of the lore is what is really attractive, do I just start from the first game and play the arcade/story mode of each game? Do I really have to play 14 games to be up to date?

Either that, or she's a sleeper agent of some sort, still working freelance with Foxy & Diana's NESTS reconstruction efforts. Which would make it pretty interesting, considering Ramon is a freelance agent, himself, that aligns himself with Vanessa's current bosses over on the Ikari side.

So of the lore is what is really attractive, do I just start from the first game and play the arcade/story mode of each game? Do I really have to play 14 games to be up to date?

Only if you want to. But if you really only cared about story beats, the only games that are really important "story wise" are 95, 96, 97, 99, 01, 03, XI and XIII. After that, you can play 98/02 or their UMs when you just want to play a game that has lots of characters to select from, and you can better appreciate the fanservice that goes into the various intro animations and the like.

Rocky model would be godlike! Now that's 3D they can do tons of outfits, model swaps. I hope they do.
