King of Fighters XIV Roster Discussion thread. Leaked roster in first post

Thanks. Any 3D rendering will be better than the atrocious design she had in XIII

I agree, she looked more like a child in that game than in her KOF '94 to XI designs.

Netcode doesn't seem to be snk's forte so a beta couldn't hurt. Plus we could get our hands on the game sooner which would be awesome.

I just want to play the bloody game and Jurassic Hurricane people in laggy matches @o@

Also agree, but we still have 33 more characters to reveal before SNK could focus on putting the finishing touches on the graphics plus enabling online multiplayer & to call it done. :)

Compared to their XIII versions...

Robert: Looks like Hienshippukyaku is not a charge move anymore and the Climax DM motion is different from his Neomax motion. Wonder if the moves have changed in how they look or just an input change, CDM's motion is reminiscent of his command grab.

King: Motion for CDM different than her Neomax. Doesn't mention being able to do the fireball in the air?

Billy: Looks like he might have a new air command normal, a new kick special and a new DM.

Seems like King just has venom strike/ tornado kick/trap shot as specials this time again.

Looks like that so far. But of course remember, we don't know what the EX versions of those moves are. I wouldn't be too surprised if her moves became alt versions of themselves under EX.

I'd like her to have her proxy-unblock back personally. She seems to have the slide, and no overhead, either...

Is it me or are there no charge characters in the game atm?
For that matter, think this'll have a Beta like how SF5 did?

Leona still has her charges, I believe.

As far as a Beta... well, SNKP has been pretty open with this game so far, and they keep talking about how they want to make it playable to people around the world. A Beta, or some stage of demo, wouldn't be entirely surprising. XII and XIII eventually had Demos on PSN and Live, but I believe they were after release...

Making an online beta would be a fantastic way to prove they're serious about netcode.

On the one hand I'm glad KOF is still breathing and getting released but on the other, these new character models look completely and utterly charmless in 3D.

They're not charmless now, but they definitely started off that way. They're getting better. The way they falter when swept, try and wring out of grapples when grabbed, and still maintain KoF staples like unique slide animations, jumps, power-up poses, unique front and back throws (missing from XII and XIII), and pre and post fight animations, helps make them among the most charming-by-animation that we've seen in quite a few releases.

Even the poses are getting better (Notice how Kyo's "Burn to fight" shoulder ram evolved from a basic hit, to his classic CD now in the latest trailer), and the fact that characters have even more unique normals now, within their new Auto/Rush combos, and there's actually an attempt to give fighters individual personality.

Compared to their XIII versions...

Robert: Looks like Hienshippukyaku is not a charge move anymore and the Climax DM motion is different from his Neomax motion. Wonder if the moves have changed in how they look or just an input change, CDM's motion is reminiscent of his command grab.

This speaks well for Ryo getting a refresh, I hope. If Robert is so similar, that should mean it's Ryo's time to diverge... If Takuma isn't in the game, that also means he could use a few Mr. Karate homage techniques...

King: Motion for CDM different than her Neomax. Doesn't mention being able to do the fireball in the air?

Yeah, she's pretty simple so far, lets see if we learn anything if we see play... I actually never really liked her Neomax much, even those it fit her decently. I just like seeing her kick and act athletic much more than watching her shoot Venom shots.

Billy: Looks like he might have a new air command normal, a new kick special and a new DM.
Wonder if he has a Staff Pogo now? Those are always good fun. I was wondering if some of those motions are his counters? We really don't have a counter chara in game yet.

Shoryureppa (we saw this in the trailer)

I was surprised how well "Go TO HELL!" worked out in MI, they didn't skimp on the hundred-or-so duplicate chains the slam produces. If it's here, I hope it's just as well done, if not even better.

Well...

King of Dinosaurs is almost 100% to be Tizoc, who would have had an animal face mask either way. Not a new character,
Almost? Moves and voice is The Wrestler formerly known as The Griffon. :p

I want Oswald back and that chinese girl with a spear. KoFXII cast was so good...

Nakoruru is going to be fun, even though I like her evil incarnation better.

So I have a question about the lore of the series:

How canon is Takuma countering a satellite laser using his fireball? I love how stupid that scene is.

I think the important thing is that he's officially capable of doing it, regardless of how many shots were canonically fired by the Zero Canon.

I am gonna check out that link you shared with me, and also VGMuseum Ending and Youtube. Thank you so much for your help.

I almost forgot - you might also want to look into these videos which cover the bulk of the Fatal Fury series story:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU-3naxZheA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIkbxLQoCRk

The implications on the KoF-specific stuff aren't big, but FF is kind of the grounded heart of the whole thing.

By the way, why are the characters separated into teams? Is it because the King of Fighters is a team-based tournament or does it have other implications in the story?

It's mostly a gameplay feature that was more consequent in the early games, where teammates in the background could get you out of a hold or attack while you were dizzy, but there are story elements to the changes in the teams, like how the Sakazaki men aren't usually too comfortable with the idea of Yuri competing, and her going and forming her own team behind their backs.

I could've sworn Fio and Eri were strikers in KOF'00.

Only Fio IIRC.

Kensou will never be the hero, huh.

He's been building up toward becoming one for years, although he still gets depicted as a dorky kid, but maybe his day is yet to come, if not in XIV.

Heck, the Ash arc in a way shifted protagonist from Ash to Elisabeth from 2003 to XIII, and that transition was even reflected on their teammates. If something like that happens again over the next story arc, instead of the torch passing to a new character, it could pass to one that's been developing and preparing for it for a while now.

And thanks for posting the UI pics, really digging how clean and classy it looks. The stage select screen has changed since the PSX build.

First Robert match footage.

His 97 style tatsu is back, so are his old fwd+LK and fwd+LP command normals (the ones from XIII are gone).

King has a new super, various normals look different than in XIII. Is it just me or does she look taller than in XIII?

Really liking Billy's refresh. As with Beni, the XIV design is probably my fave for the character yet.

The person who uploaded the above HK vids posted on MMCafe:

Robert feels like a mix of old and new, I'd say mostly from stuff in KOF XIII, but his spinny kick is the KOF 98 version instead of his XIII version. His f+A goes a bit farther than you are usually used with.

King is pretty simple. No air fireballs this time, but you can still cancel light attacks into her slide, into Tornado Kick. She also his her qcbx2+K super from 98.

So glad that her air fireball is gone, still gives me nightmares.

Yeah it was my bad for not checking but Steam does refunds so it's not a big deal.

I am serious that I am extremely disappointed that she's not in the game. She's my favourite character.

That may be but this is a team based game. How is it possible that you don't like anyone else when you like vanessa?

Didn't know Krauser was unpopular, wtf is wrong with people? He is my favorite boss, all of his moves scream charisma, leg tomahawk, german suplex, blitz ball, the Raoh punch and the OG Kaiser Wave . Not to mention he has the BEST theme out of all the characters, when dat Mozard requiem is playing you know shit is about to happen.

I think part of it has to do with a couple of factors. For one, he's not what most Japanese fans would consider a "handsome guy". For two, as far as KOF goes, most of his shtick has been stolen by Rugal, right down to being the fierce big guy that rocks a 'stache.

Too bad, too, as the FF fan in me always preferred Krauser's sense of style.

Now I admit I like Rugal more, but Krauser is still the OG. How OG?
Brutha be like charging his Kaiser Wave all 'Come at me bro' style, then you come at him and eat a projectile as tall as him.

I for one would certainly welcome back that crazy bastard!

Actually, who owns the rights to Karnov and Data East's IP's at this point? Not SNK surely?

Well this guy made it to KoF and he's from a Data East game so I dunno

She's quite the unknown, and has much of the looks and possible style of some of SNK's best. If she's handled well, she might be one of the best new additions...

If Ryo and Yuri come out prancing in their ancient 20+ year old threads again I'm going to have to kick someone.

Eh, they're had different under-shirts, degree of gi, new details added to their gis, and the whole varied and detailed designs of Maximum Impact series. I can't think of what I'd really like to see Yuri wear that's different. The fusion of old school aerobics wear and a tossed on Gi just fits her Goofy Kung Fu renegade personality well.

I guess it'd be kinda cool if she cribbed some style from Robert, actually. Or Maybe she'd take up the Mantle of Ms. Karate, and piss everyone off, heh.

That zero frame start up tho.

And thanks for posting the UI pics, really digging how clean and classy it looks. The stage select screen has changed since the PSX build.

NP. It also is a nice way to give us no idea how many stages the final will have, haha. The cleanliness is good though; I'm not a minimalist fan, but in a 50 character cast game, the juxtaposition of a cluster of characters, but a smooth, no-frills UI, is a nice contrast.

They missed the train on that design unfortunately.

There's always this though:

An older Yuri with her hair down like in the third pic would be nice.

I don't think these 3 images showed up, but I can guess the 3rd one, from what you said. Long hair could be good for her, but I'd rather see it as part of a KO-effect / Alt look (like, as a color or held-button choice) rather than default.

Looks like the daughter of Terry and Mary.

This is probably a good reason why Mary doesn't seem to be in the roster...

Heh, I remember Pen Pen from loketest footage for KoF XIII 5 years ago. Anywaho, didn't expect to see that HienShippukyaku back. It is pretty stylish and fancy, so cool. KIng might look taller, the trap shot style DM is cool, wish we saw it land.

I haven't seen enough of Billy yet to really appreciate him. But saw a lot of his backdash! :/ The Screen Freeze upon MAX activation does appear to be gone for now. I actually wouldn't mind no-freeze for random activation, freeze for mid-combo style.

So glad that her air fireball is gone, still gives me nightmares.

She had some kind od aerial Venom Shots in XI too, and I like the idea of her having some air game. Something like an in-air Tornado Kick would be cool, especially if it could be made safe from proper heights.

Is Tizo... er... "King of Dinosaurs" playable at said event?

Nope, it's the same 6 from PSX Build, plus Robert, Billy, and King.

Ayo you know who the otherworldy team should feature?
This badass right her
tumblr_md6u8qkZ3E1qd9g7oo1_cover.png

Sure, Karnov would be nice to see, need some guest who aren't all generic-shoto-ish in design. Fighter's History Ryoko and World Heros Ryoko should also just fuse into one character by now, heh. She always reminded me of FF2's Jubei in play, so I'd love to see her appear.

From FH I'd much prefer Ryoko Kano - heckm then they could team her up with daimon and Jubei Yamada as Team Judo.

I'm kind of glad it's gone, the screen freeze thing to give the activator time to do a special didn't sit well with me. Seems like a bad idea in a game that focuses on jumping as much as KOF does.

Every time someone would jump or whatever people would quickly activate to slow time and then input an EX move or super, that would get annoying fast.

I can agree. Though it wouldn't be used THAT often as an AA predictor (you do have to wait for it to wear off to use again), and the choice to put a big "I CAN DO EX MOVES NOW!" Mark on your head, for a single anti-air, seems like an OK trade off.

Being able to pause the screen and prepare for EX V Slashers might have been too much for many...

Yuri's in XIII was the same as it ever was?

People have issues with he "Moe-fied" look Yuri and Athena had in XIII. Ignore the fact that Yuri's personality has always had her as an immature goofball, she has to be build like a generic 20-something year old, just like she was in old KOF!

Considering the style of this game, I expect most people will happily get a more averagely built, "adult" style Yuri and Athena out of this game. We already have more "realistically-muscular" Ralf and Clark.

Hopefully this support PS3 fight sticks on ps4

I wouldn't count on SNKP getting wind of Lab Zero's driver, and implementing it properly. I mean, it COULD happen, just like we COULD get an online beta. But these seem pretty unlikely, until proven otherwise.

Yeah you're probably right, they took it out now so I guess we'll never know.

Looking forward to seeing what other adjustments they make to the mechanics prior to release.

I wish there was more video coming out of C3!

Really disappointed with the Taipei and HK fans, very surprised at how little content they uploaded. Fans at PSX were on another level.

In XIII she had short hair with no braid, although there was a way to select her with a short braid, a bit like the Raiden mask option.

Her haircut was even a plot point in the story for the Sakazaki teams, what with Takuma being upset about that being a distancing factor between his memories of their closeness during her childhood (and maybe the AoF incidents, but it's not clera if those applied in the KoF timeline) and her current self.

Btw they added more elaborate hair animation for Leona in the HK build.

In the PSX build it was less animated like in the 2D games.

In the HK build the hair moves a lot each time Leona moves or attacks, and it seems to animate properly and not just be weirdo SFV physics based. Looks nice.

Speaking of story... Could this game take place earlier? Unless this is a dream match, why are dead characters back? Shouldn't Geese be dead at this point for example? No Ash or Elizabeth is weird, too. Have they mentioned if this is a soft reboot of the story?

SNK prob. used the story events of KoF 13 to revive some characters namely Vice and Mature.

And I think Geese never died in the KOF timeline.

Ash got erased from history in the KOFXIII ending, basically sacrificed himself.

The ending was pretty touching actually.

What's weird is the lack of Duo Lon and Shen Woo given SNK's focus on the Chinese audience.
