Sakurai considered Geno for Super Smash Bros. Brawl/4

That depends on what people mean by the next Smash game.

I still remember the "Smash 6" job posting.

I'm going to assume that means an NX version. If we get more characters I'm keeping my expectations in check this time around, Ice Climbers and Wolf seem like a sure bet but then again Wolf seemed like a sure bet for DLC and here we are.

As for characters I actually want, well, as long as Sakurai's in charge we likely won't ever see Ridley so I just need to hold out hope Charizard never gets cut. I do want Wolf to sort of replicate that feeling Brawl gave me, there was a void when I found out Wolf was cut even if I never really used him all that much. I honestly probably wouldn't change my main from Charizard unless either Ridley was finally given to us, or something crazy happens and we end up with Amaterasu or Agumon or something. He, it can happen.

As for Kamiya directing the next Smash game, I really, really hope not. If memory serves, he's the "smash idiots" guy isn't he? Chances are Sakurai can't fathom the idea of anyone taking the series in a direction that isn't his own vision. There will be more Smash games and Sakurai will most likely return to direct, even if it kills him.

I was playing UMvC3 recently and I was thinking how hype something like Amaterasu or Wesker would be in Smash and now I just want a Nintendo vs. Capcom game. The latter has already demonstrated its huge wealth of gaming icons that could match Nintendo's.

Smash 5 to features nobody because Sakurai is probably done directing Smash.

Nah

The way he's been talking in these interviews never even humors the idea of not continuing to work on Smash. If anything, it implies he's still continuously thinking of who to add next, even to future games he hasn't even started yet

He has no reason to stop working on Smash. He's young, he loves fanservice and making players happy, and he loves working with other company's IPs. Smash is the perfect game for him. He also holds a lot of sway over third parties, where he's able to just call them up and get a deal going.

Sakurai not continuing the Smash series is basically just a meme not really founded in anything other than drama queen stuff Sakurai always pulls every Smash game.

I think that poster was suggesting Kamiya do a new Takamaru game, not Smash.

As much as I love Smash Kamiya doesn't seem quite right. I'm sure there are other things I'd like to see from him first
like Bayonetta x Devil May Cry
.

Anyway Kamiya actually has nothing against Smash and is friends with Sakurai, he just got annoyed when so many people were telling him to put Bayonetta in the game as though it was his decision and not Sakurai's or Sega's.

But yeah... despite all his talk of wanting to do his own thing, Sakurai really seems controlling of SSB. The way he talks about getting to include all these third-party characters really seems like a dream come true for him. He seems to have genuinely loved the process of making it into a celebration of videogames as a whole.

I still think that the NX game would be a GOTY/Complete edition of SSBU. It makes too much sense since otherwise we'll be waiting until 2023 at this rate.

Oh, absolutely.

Geno is a major representative of a game that was so great, it launched not one, but TWO Mario RPG spinoff series.

He totally deserved a spot. What a shame. If Sakurai doesn't return for the next Smash, I think it's safe to say Geno will never get in...

Considering two new DKC games between Smash 3 and 4 didn't amount to anything, I doubt it.

I don't know about that, Tropical Freeze sure as heck didn't help Dixie Kong

/still salty

To be fair, I'd reckon Sakurai probably didn't know that much about Tropical Freeze when planning characters for Smash 4.

Remember that when Sakurai finished the planning process for Smash 4 early in 2012, Donkey Kong Country Returns was the only major DK game out on the market, and it only featured DK and Diddy.

While trying to predict Sakurai's madness is foolish, it's starting to feel like we could guess most of Smash 5's roster by now.

Surely you mean Wolf and Ice Climbers?

I think that these two characters would be the least shocking additions to Smash that any human could ever conceive. :p

Smash is basically about fans convincing themselves something can't happen, and then it does
The only thing left that can't happen would probably be non-video game characters (which was explicitly mentioned as a rule for the Smash Ballot, & is likely the only line that Sakurai won't cross)
and maybe characters from rival first party companies depending on how Nintendo sees the competition

Oh, absolutely.

Pardon my failure at reading comprehension then. In any case, my hope is that the NX game is SSBU with some of the 3DS's features (like exclusive stages and smash run) and maybe treat us to the Ice Climbers if they were lost due to 3DS-Wii U parity, maybe even throw in Wolf just because.

I'm not expecting much beyond that, and even expecting that much might be setting myself up for disappointment. I know a lot of people here on GAF aren't too keen on K. Rool or his fans, but he was the character I latched onto during the Ballot days due to Ridley being a non-factor with his boss status. The DLC left a sour taste in my mouth but that was due to me putting in far too much emotional investment and my free time into the Ballot discussion, speculation, and mild campaigning (I did some doodles, that's enough from me).

I'd be cool with any non-human characters introduced at this point, veteran or newcomer, first party or third party. Mewtwo was basically the only non-human DLC character for instance.

I know SE owns Geno but I'm surprised he's not licensed out to Nintendo given his fan popularity.

This is the same Squenix that can't be bothered to put out mainline remakes of their own games by themselves without Nintendo's intervention. You can't expect Squenix to make any sense when it comes to this kind of stuff.

Honestly, as odd as it may sound, having Master Chief, Mario, Cloud, Sonic and Link be in the same game together would be sweet as hell. It's like a Gamefaqs Character Battle come to life, lol.

but make sure to put banjo/kazooie in first if we start adding ms characters

Geno could actually have a pretty fun moveset if they implemented timed hits into his strategy, but I'm not sure how you handle the aerial stuff for it to tie into SMRPG.

If we're gonna go through the legal arrangements to include a character that's only really meaningful to a group of Nintendo fans from a certain point in time, why not Banjo Kazooie? :p

But for real, I'd rather have every veteran character revamped completely before any more characters. The DLC newcomers put the original eight to shame in terms of translating their abilities from their respective games, even ignoring the really notable mechanics like Ryu's controls and Bayonetta's Witch Time.

Oh, we all learned that the hard way.

latest

We learned back in Brawl when Mega Man didn't happen, even though he was absolutely guaranteed and Sakurai would be stupid to add Sonic and Snake, but not Mega Man. Part of the reason people doubted the Brawl roster when it leaked was because it was missing Mega Man. And that ROB was ridiculous apparently, even though he's a perfect character for Smash, and it was kind of obvious he was a character when the Subspace was announced showing ROBs and a villain that mostly looked like a ROB wearing a robe. Oh yea, and Toon Link being a made up name and they'd never bring Young Link (who also had a made up name) back instead of Roy or Mewtwo.

It's the same cycle every time, and it's always a joy to watch unfold. I think Smash 4 actually had more hype per character than Brawl did, probably because Brawl just kind of put new comers out there, while Smash 4 made them into an event. Directs were all about what new character would be announced for Smash 4, where Brawl never really had that.

Cloud probably makes Geno easier now. SE is already involved with Smash.

I don't think every single veteran needs to be redone. A certain few could, like Samus, Ganondorf, and Zelda (not so much because of representation, but because how consistently awful gameplay-wise her design has been throughout Smash), but I think a lot of the 64 and Melee vets hold up fine, even if they're more "simple".

One change I'd like to see for Donkey Kong is letting him roll off ledges with his dash attack and let him jump cancel out of it, mimicking how rolling works in DKC (I believe Project M did this), but other than that I like how DK is in Smash.

I really want to know what happened with the cut characters, but he probably won't talk about that to avoid controversy.

If Sakurai goes completely senile when he gets old but still sticks around as Smash director, would his decisions be any more or less predictable?

Remember the one where the Sanghelli homeworld was just feudal Japan and the Arbiter fought an Elite wearing samurai armor and wielding a metal sword in a single stroke duel?

That was stupid.
Ah yes, truly Halo Legends was a treasure trove.
