Nah, it's absolutely nothing like that. I'm not saying that women will be physically directly in harm's way (though culture of rape and objectification of women is not a coincidence IMO), I'm saying that sexual objectification is societally problematic. Absolutely nothing like the Jack Thompson-style argument against violent video games training Johnny to be a killer.

Videogames, even less so niche/cartoon fanservice titles that need to be imported, won't have any impact on a serious discourse of reception of women, outside of anyone who's already shaped that way. So it's the same as the gunnuts for which certain people blamed violent videogames, because they didn't understand that most actually comprehend the difference between a game and reality after all. Normal people go out to watch fanservice and gore wilfully to be entertained, understanding that they are watching fiction and not ideologies. Others that take entertainment media as an underline for their worldview are idiots that you'll never get rid off anyway, regardless of whether fanservice games exist or not.

Porn is all about the release, ecchi is about the buildup. I actually tend to find it more interesting than full blown porn. The fact that it's just teasing you instead of going all out also allows them to actually somewhat develop the characters and a plot, and people genuinely get attached to them.

I honestly like the characters in Prison School or Monster Musume, but I don't really care about 'hentai character #39', you know what I mean?

In a videogame, another thing it allows for them to develop are proper game mechanics, to make a game that's actually fun to play, because you won't just be looking at sex and masturbating, you'll be playing a game. So stuff like Senran Kagura is actually fun.

There's also the fact that not being full blown porn allows them to release it on consoles, which makes it so they can increase their budget and deliver a much better ecchi product than what they could do if it was porn. I don't think this soft engine thing this game has going on would even be developed if it wasn't a home console franchise.

What i don't get is how anything related to sex, nudity etc is such a bad taboo thing in games, yet murder, gore, beheading, and all sorts of extremes of violence are accepted as the norm.

I haven't really been following the game - or any of the past Xtreme games or the DoA Universe for that matter - but is this really the case? I mean, from my little exposure I imagine all of the girls probably are made in-accordance with your standard set of male-ideal-fantasy archetypes, but I don't see the 'stretch' to sexism and the undermining or demeaning of women you're suggesting.

Is it because it essentially portrays the female characters as objects for sexual gratification i.e. sex objects? The problem then that it's perpetuating objectification and a subliminal institutionalized sexism? Is the DoA Xtreme 3 only sexist insofar as this question?

I don't know; if that's the case then how do you ever then appreciate, admire and enjoy looking at a female body (or male body for that matter) - even a video game one. Surely you can still appreciate the female form without even the slightest sexist thought - basically, enjoy the fanservice titillation without objectification? Semantically I feel like there shouldn't be a problem here, but I guess from the way in which people and cultures consume games like this (and porn in general), there must surely be some problematic repercussions there.

The game is essentially softcore porn. This is not a game touted as a commentary on females or women as a whole. It's marketed and made for a certain audience and is fully aware of it's strengths and weaknesses. I for one am comfortable within my sexuality, and am mature enough to appreciate something I deem attractive, be it sexual or otherwise without ripping my cock off.

Others simply enjoy titillation. Smut is healthier than drugs, alcohol or violence.

I don't think we can dismiss games without being critical of their impact to society. Media isn't harmless and games can perpetuate sexism just as any other influential media.

HOWEVER, this particular game is akin to the Swimsuit edition of Sport Illustrated. While many agree that it's sexist, it's hardly worth being a target of extended criticism, unlike something like MGSV with Quiet's character.

I think it depends. Good question. In the case of pornography, for example, there is a serious cultural problem with addiction and of course those who are addicted to pornography are going to have their understanding of sexual experiences problematically colored. I don't know that sex-positive pornography in general is problematic but I think it should generally exist on the fringe of an industry. Some of you have given the example of erotic literature or pornographic films, but those are on the extreme fringe of their respective industries and are not mainstreamed. The reason Feminist Frequency exists for example is that mainstream games have a lot of problematic depictions and messages about women (and minorities, and other groups) that mainstream film and literature have been able to evolve past. You know? But there are also still examples unquestionably in the mainstream that are problematic. It's just that you don't see an equivalent of DOAX3 being released in theaters. I guess the equivalent since IIRC DOAX3 isn't coming overseas would be like if indie theaters were showing Senran Kagura. That would be the best example of how this wouldn't fly or be as mainstream in cinema, comparatively speaking.

You'll have to tell me how a game that isn't even available for purchase outside of asia and won't sell in big amounts isn't "at the extreme fringe of the industry".

Regardless, porn is mainstream. Almost everybody watches porn. It's not something fringe.

I was just thinking that I'm never buying this, since it's not being localized and all, and twitch would be the one way for me to somewhat see the content, and thinking about it, Twitch Chat would probably make it even more fun than the game itself. The faces are still a bit weird, I agree. But they're vastly improved over early entries of the DOA franchise, if you look at old screenshots, so they're on the right path.
