Like what I'm reading so far.

Of course, assuming that they don't kill this supposed "boss" (or its effects) off so soon, maybe it means we can get more crossovers and ways to bring back "dead" characters back in the mix for XV.

C'mon, CYS...

Reminds me of NGBC, as far as having a story reason to pull characters together. KoF is a fun series with a good story; after all these years, from Ancient powers, to technology, to ancient ancestors, and even aliens, I think I can deal with multiverse manipulation.

Any game with Shermie in it is better because of it, as far as I'm concerned!

I just want to say that I've seen enough here to know that I'll be buying. I'm impressed with the improvements being made.

Welcome to the fold, lol. It is nice to see the product grow, and I'm really happy to seen SNKP responding to feedback and such. They actually feel like a modern company again!

The source should be 4chan. And I was quite unhappy with the barebones port of SS2. No reasons to play it on 360 when I still own the neo geo aes cart. But then Tenka and Zero Special are so much better anyways.

As one who owns no AES stuff, and years before NeoGeo Station, easily importable / downloadable releases, and less censored than the US PS2 releases... it felt pretty great at the time.

Demon boy, eh?

Yeah, wonder how that's gonna turn out. Could Tung be attempting to team someone else how to control a raging second side of their personality?

Kinda seemed like a "fuck you."

So coarse! But seriously, why? Ash was a character meant to be hated. They mention this on the anniversary site. So after spending multiple games making him more and more contemptible... they put him into a huge sacrifice situation. Really pull on the heartstrings, trying to get you to think that he might not have been so bad after all.

Being erased from existence because of the death of relative isn't all that uncommon in such stories. But the fact they now appear to be in a storyline that encourages alternative universes and time travel... seems pretty convenient, right? And they could always "reincarnate" Ash in some new body / form in the story, especially as an excuse to bring Elizabeth and friends back.

That bit about the villain certainly sounds like they regret killing off certain characters. I hope they bring Shermie back and gives us a Grappling Ladies team of Shermie, Blue Mary and Hinako.

Fuck Ash, though. I'd be cool with them bringing back Elisabeth, Shen Woo and Duo Lon, but Ash can stay in oblivion.

A new Daily Screenshot? Via SNK Twitter:

Man and I thought R. Mika was wacky, SNK going all out.

The background seems darkened, maybe it's his Climax DM?

It's probably that and just allowing them expand their reach in general as to what characters they can include.

This way they can include characters from any time (Rock Howard anyone?) and game (SamSho etc.). It's really quite excellent.

And I agree with SAB CA, Ash is a great character and easily one of the best examples of having a character whose personality can be seen in every aspect of him.

He is supposed to be an ass and you can see that from a mile away from his design to his animation (look at how he throws his fireball, walks, attacks with normals, crouches while idling etc.). Not only that but they even incorporated this fully into his play style where again he is a total ass and frustrating to deal with.

And the way his story ended (how he was disappearing from photos with Duo Lon and Shen, that head band in Liz's hands T_T) really made him memorable from a story perspective as well.

I believe I remember an interview from many years ago where they stated that they regretted killing the New Face Team so soon after their introduction. And even now, all three members of the squad still place highly on popularity polls, so I think it's just a manner of time before they get some hand wave in place to bring them back.

Killing that trio off was such a blunder.

Stylish, unique and each have access to two distinct play styles/versions.

Well... in KOF94 the Ikari Warriors team represented Brazil, so I guess technically they are Brazilian.

Nah, in 94 the team/country assignments were more a matter of location than actual nationality - heck, team England consisted of women from France, Japan and the USA.

As for the daily screenshot thing, could lead to some neat preview moments a la Smash.
I wonder if KoD was always meant to be covered first, or they noticed how well the net's been responding to him. On the other hand, he was the 1st character on the latest trailer.

If that is King of Dinosaur's ultimate Super, then he better finish with a pose like his LP super or with crossing his arms as he slams the ground.

EDIT: Not gonna triple post so

Exactly.

Again, I'm just trusting that eventually, SNKP will just have KOF's roster blossom to insane numbers as sequels go on. Of course, if they want to surprise all of us with periodic character DLC at a fair price and give XIV a chance to breathe on its own, I'm game for that too.

I'm liking Geese in that suit. Just as long as he's still got the hakama as an "EX alt" of some sort...

I've really wanted Geese in a suit for a long time.

I'm pretty excited about future DLC if that info is correct. Any character could come back.

I still want Vanessa though.

and Marco debut

I very much hope some characters have their classic outfits as alt. Because I don't like Iori or Kyo at all.

I'm fine with Iori, but dammit, I want headband Kyo again. :(

This game needs alt costumes. It's what i want the most.
Everyone who dislikes the new designs could just unlock/buy the classic designs.

Really can't wait to see more of the new designs. Loving Terry, Kyo, and Benimaru and the most. Wonder if snkp will go crazy with dlc costumes?

I wish. There are some characters we can pretty much file under never returning. #FreeKrauser
You want him to have a headband with the XIV outfit?
True. A durag may work better with the new outfit. :)

Fuckin' gross. Lol

Also, you gotta' believe!

Well that design has him wearing a high school uniform so age does become an issue.

Not if you're Sakura. :p

But seriously though, I miss the headband being part of his outfit. Although, not with what he has going for him now. He doesn't even part hair down from the middle.

Apparently the leak has a new Brazilian team too, so you're in luck I guess.

They are actually from the USA.

Still here on chile we had a running gag, on an KOF manga, they explain that Clark went on a mission on argentina while Ralf went to "the country next to it" so we always say that clark is argentinian and ralf chilean

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
Wow, where's my main guy Joe Higashi?

Thought he'd be a shoe in for this installment :(

I like how different their designs look this time.

Usually the difference was just in some accessories (hat/bandanna, gloves) but this time the similarity is only in theme (military) and they both look pretty distinct otherwise.

And Ralf's muscles/skin look a lot better defined in that pic than when he was first revealed.

The anniversary site is a pretty good place to start: http://kofaniv.snkplaymore.co.jp/english/index.html

For each game with an actual story (all but 98, 2002 and XII) there's a section with the general backstory for the individual game, as well as team/character-specific stories.

It's still a pretty big body of work which draws a lot from the series that precede KoF, like Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting - those are in a separate timeline from KoF, but their events and characters are still occasionally referenced in KoF (especially in XIII's pre-match dialogs).
You can find about that timeline and its events here: http://meh.brpxqzme.net/timeline.html

Other than that there aren't major unified resources, especially official ones in English, but between those 2 sites and the SNK wiki you can still discover a lot - just check on characters you like and work from there, not unlike looking into comics (KoF pretty much works on comic book time, unlike the series that it references). Also, feel free to ask about any specifics here.

Thanks for this. I finally had time to review the first link. For games with canon stories, I have AoF2, LB1, Garou, KoF 2000, and KoFXIII (I only have non-canon FF games). I broke out Garou and played through Rock's story and damn I really should've been paying attention to this game a lot sooner. I've always known SNK stages were gorgeous but Terry's stage is flat out amazing. Now I just need to figure out how to change MVS difficulty switches in FB Alpha so I can scum my way to fight Kain quickly, hah. Put me in the camp that wishes Rock was going to be in a new game. Who are the "hero teams" for 2000 & XIII (i.e., the teams to play to get the best overview of the canon story)? K' team for 2000?

That's one of the reasons I would have preferred Clark kept the vest, would have set them further apart aesthetically and he sort of fits with that "trucker" image from 2002-XI

The detail to the clothing is nice. Outside of 3d fighters like Tekken and DOA. Its something that never stood out to me before with other 2.5d fighters.

Also unpopular opinion coming but I think one of the ikari warriors should still have the steroid build. I think it worked more for Ralf than it did Clark.

No, the roided look was terrible in both of them, it wasn't as bad on the artwork, but it did not translate to the sprites at all. Now they look closer to what they did in their XII/XIII artwork build-wise, and they, along with Tizoc, seem to be the beefiest fighters revealed so far.

I'm not sure if one of the FFs you have is RB2, but some endings there have interesting aspects to them - Geese's, and there's sort of a promising little story between the endings of Kim, Chonshu, Chonrei and Tung - might not amount to much, but makes me wish for a frown and retrained Chonrei in a Garou 2.

Who are the "hero teams" for 2000 & XIII (i.e., the teams to play to get the best overview of the canon story)?

For 2000, IIRC you get some decent plot point out of K's team, the Ikaris (mostly for Whip's role), I think Benimaru's team also had relevant things there (I think Lin's in his team that year, and Ron's in the ending), and I'm not 100% sure (on my phone now, so tricky to check), but Athena's team's ending covers a bit of Kensou's latent story. I think there's also a specific ending if you can use Kula in your team.

For XIII, you want to follow The path of Elisabeth and her team - it's the Ash saga and Kyo and Iori may be the series poster boys, but notice everywhere in the GUI she's listed first, and it's for story reasons really.
In arcade mode I think having Ash in your team not only gives you his dialog before matches, but I think there's his own ending, although that one's sort of the default in story mode.
Iori's team ending also goes over the kind of changes that are clearly affecting the state of things in XIV.

Great - thanks much! I do have RB2 (everything in the recent humble bundle) so I'll add that to my current playlist.

Great new shots, via SRK (AT_Ryo_Sakazaki).

That creeper KOD lol.

Clark's command grabs are looking nice and painful.

I dig the new design tbh.

Who want a super argentine noogie!

There's a 10% chance a S.A.B fails, and becomes a S.A.N. They do the same damage, it just looks funny!

I do like Clark's shirt, it looks a bit different fabric wise than the leather-fest much of the game has. Also glad they've kept Ralf having more tanned skin. They've taken some good queue's from XII and XIII so far, which means people who actually like those designs aren't entirely getting left behind.

The detail to the clothing is nice. Outside of 3d fighters like Tekken and DOA. Its something that never stood out to me before with other 2.5d fighters.

I really don't understand why anyone would call it a 'roid build, because that implies they look unnatural VS what they could achieve in their world. They looked hella built, yes, but so do Daimon, Maxima, even Terry and Raiden.

They looked Gear of War built. A perfect update to those who looked Stallone and Schwarzenegger built back in the 80s and 90s. It worked for Nona's animation-exaggerated style well. But this game is more "realistic". It would have been nice to see Clark with a BIT bigger build than Ralf (he might have it, as their Gattling attack picture shows less of Clark's arms to his side then Ralf's), because... S.A.B should take ridiculous strength. And he's not as big as Goro, or mechanically updated like Maxima.

Heh, I do this all the time in fights between my Maxima, and my brother's Ralf, haha.

Yay, Maxima Press returns! To me, one of the best new moves for the XII series. Will we see the return of Maxima Scramble? I'd be OK with that, but what I really want back is MAXIMA REVENGA.

This is Mount Tackle -> Clark Lift, so he SHOULD have the tackle back.

I really hope this, and maybe Vulcan attack, are the only special moves the 2 share. Ralf had a great EX for this move in XIII, that was like a baby Super Vulcan Punch DM. Clark gets the Napalm Stretch out of his variation.

If Ralf gets a command throw / unblockable back, it SHOULD NOT be the S.A.B.

A crippling gut punch or such would make a lot more sense, and actually be unique to him.

I want the Ralf and Clark into from KoF 97 back :(

Speaking of which, I wonder if Billy stills wishes of kicking Iori's butt.

I've been ok with most of the redesigns but still don't like Terry's no matter how hard I want to.

Yeah, I agree. Terrys classic "vest" costume is way better. It looks more comfortable for fighting and emphasizes his physical power (because of his buff arms).

This game needs alt costumes. It's what i want the most.
Everyone who dislikes the new designs could just unlock/buy the classic designs.

Fingers crossed. Usually, I dont care about male costumes much at all, but I'd pay for classic Terry.

Wowa, mask based stances? That's cool.

About bringing SamSho characters to KoF, I'm probably in the minority that wouldn't like to see Haohmaru. His moveset isn't as interesting compared to other options; Kyoshiro, Sougetsu for instance.

EDIT: It might not be Unity3D after all.

Ron introduced the Dragon Spirit concept right? So, in my mind Duo should be involved in Dragon Spirit business because his father should also be involved. Unless snk is just dropping that side of the plot.
