Battlefield 5 retail listing at World of Games (Swiss), "tactical shooter in WW1"

Yup thats what im thinking. Really happy if true.

It is all in presentation. WW1 could only be the setting or a theme but the actual game could be anything but. It very well might be some kind of alternate reality 1910s with tesla guns and huge tanks and flying battleships. It might very well be Battlefield 2142 but with different skins.

I would love a gritty AAA WW1 sp campaign. Haven't bothered with BF since BF2 (and that PSN game) but I would buy it just for that.
Though yeah, for people playing all the modern BFs that might be to big of a change for the MP, though I don't really invest much time in that anymore, so...

Oooo just read back and saw that John Harker hinted this is an alternate reality WW1 setting (I have no idea who John is or how he'd know anything about this game but people seem to be giving him credit).

I just hope they keep the vehicles a large part of the game despite WW1 being more infantry orientated. I want a strong tank/mech game.

I think even those of us who desperately want this understand that it would be an unfathomably bold move that probably wouldn't be green lit as a main series game. If it's true, wow at ea giving that creative freedom. It would be a breath of fresh air for sure
Yeah it's great news, with the inevitable Titanfall 2 EA has their futuristic shooter covered. So maybe they were willing to let DICE have quite a bit of creative freedom. I'm so happy we're getting this if true, can't wait.

I can't believe so many people here are excited about WWI setting. It promises to be insanely boring, with horrible weapons and horrible fights. What will we have, pigeons instead of drones or a 32v32 mode in which both sides sit in a trench for 30 minutes?
Plus it just screams a sales bomb, people don't want to play these games. There's a reason nobody makes WW2 games anymore, and this is twice as uninteresting.
Also, why change the winning formula?
They made so much money with these last few games, are they willing to throw it all away and chase everybody towards CoD?

It's a stupid idea, and I hope it's not true. And it probably isn't. It would be a franchise suicide.

Your comment reminds me of Activision before Modern Warfare hit. Activision were convinced and presented statistics to Infinity Ward showing them that the public weren't interested in modern war settings and just wanted more WW2. But IW wanted to take the series in a modern direction and had to fight to convince Activision to let them do it. The time period really isn't going to impact the sales negatively if the games are still great. Black Ops was released after two MW games, yet it was hugely popular even though it took place in the 40's and 60's. It actually opened higher than even MW2 did in the US.

I think you are going a little overboard here. We've had World War 1 shooters, maybe not a big triple A title but we've had them. It was only a matter of time until we shifted back to historical shooters. It's not as popular as World War 2 or Vietnam but those will be coming too, and in boat loads if they sell well. I give EA and Dice or whoever is developing credit for being the first big throwback shooter but chances are some other company/companies are developing a WW1 or WW2 shooter as we speak.

I would love this, It would be nice to see shooters go back to the Historical events. and would feel fresh after all the modern and future settings in many recent shooters.

for Call of Duty tho you need only call it COD and slap a number on it and watch it print money regardless of the setting - thats not my thought process for buying a game tho.

Wonder if this alternative universe is because of a more prominent role of Nikola Tesla in the US army. I remember reading he proposed the radar to them, but Edison turned him down because of bad blood.

I think it will make multiplayer amazing, no more bullshit auto weapons and spray lovers, it would be one on one, skill vs skill, work together in trenches and expand so it's not just the western front.

Make a fantastic single player experience with lots of historical facts and information, make it about the story of soldiers and personal experiences and make it visceral.

Is that too much to ask?
This guy gets it. Make the shots hit hard and bolting your rifles take fucking ages to punish bad aim.

Yo I would love a WW1 setting but given BF's gameplay I do figure it all would be artistic license as far as the historical accuracy is concerned.

No way they'd make a trench warfare game as much as a game that has WW1 weapon/soldier/tank designs with severely unrealistic reload times and weapon capabilities.

I think I see it now. Dice came to Ea. They have the numbers. They have to see the modern day time fatigue better than us. They had to make a choice. Far future or Far Past. Everyone is doing future, and Dice had done 8 years in a row in near future times, with the only respites being digital games or expansions. Everyone, all 3 Cods, Battlefront, TitanFall, ect are going distant, sci-fi,Far future, or a mix.

By going that far back they take a risk, but also single themselves out on the market, in comparison to competition and internal products. I assume they were able to show a great pitch, and also assure EA that by making it alternative reailty they would be able to keep certian key elements of Battlefield, like the massive amounts of things to unlock. A good showing at E3 and GDC+ a public beta should get the public opinion turned around. It will still be an uphill battle.

What I find most interesting about this is I can't imagine WW1 being a 1 off thing. Not in the sense that this might become a trilogy, but more so that the furthest possible point was chosen to go back too. As in this will start a chain of games exploring different Wars and time periods pushing back up to the modern day. WW1, WW2, Korean War,Vietnam War, Desert Storm, Iraq Freedom ect.

Huh. I've always thought a steampunk or dieselpunk Battlefield could be an amazing alternative to Battlefield 1944 if DICE decided WW2 didn't suit their 'need' for spamming unlocks and gimmick weapons. It'd be hilarious to see them actually pull it off.

Though I'd be curious to see straight up WW1, too. I feel like WW2 is the lowest you can go on the technological ladder to really facilitate the 'Battlefield spirit,' so I'd be interested to see what DICE would actually do with WW1.

Hey man, we never claimed sanity. I just want to get my Somme and Kaiserschlacht with high production values on, is that too weird?

So you want Insta kills from unseen explosives? Play CoD on veteran. If you want it to be even more realistic find a hack that renders enemies invisible. So you die from a random explosion without ever even seeing an enemy. The ultimate realsitic ww1 game. :p

There's verdun, which I've never heard of and.....what else? Battlefield is one of the biggest shooter franchises of all time. A ww1 game would be absolutely shocking and a huge financial risk to EA. what we are speculating about in this thread has literally never been done before.

It would be cool if they did an alternate history BioShock Infinite kind of setting. Not in terms of a floating city, but more so the stylization of the game and its weapons. So diesel punk, I guess.
