I polity disagree with the above sentiments.

Fact of the matter is reviews were a big draw for both youtube and the website. While you might be only tuning in for the personalities instead of reviews, a solid chunk of traffic was made up of people who did the exact opposite. GTs reviews were in many ways one of bedrocks of the site. Going forward that might change, but it's my hope that it doesn't.

True, a lot of GT's reviews got like half a million views upwards, definitely their highest performing output.

Shane goin off on Adblock users. Yea you tell em buddy! Shame on you for using adblock! Just stop goin to websites that have ads you don't like.

On a recent episode of Pachter Factor, Pachter commented that Kyle should basically join Sifted. I wonder if Shane is trying to get any of the staff.

In a perfect world, yeah. But, just last week there was a website (Forbes) that required people to disable Adblock to read their content. There happened to be malware in their ads. This is a big problem with many sites. Yahoo had this issue months ago with their Flash based ads.

Yea malware has been spreading like crazy through legitimate website's ads. Some sites have gotten out of control with it. I was trying to read an article the other day on a site and legit couldn't because I was getting pop ads and redirects, and I was viewing it on an iPhone which I didn't think that stuff was happening on phones as well.

even if you have adblock on your phone with cydia those pop up ads that redirect you still come up, they're very frustrating.

Hell, I've had it happen on GAF. Something that used a Java exploit (or maybe it was Flash). Not to mention all the mobile ads that redirect you to the App Store without asking. And GAF is careful about their ads. It still happens.

Brandon says his goal is to announce the new thing by the end of the month (or at the very least, give people a name)

Suggests people from GT past may be involved (probably Damiani) and supposedly everyone is still on board to do it. He doesn't want to announce anything too early and doesn't want to make any promises like "yes ____ will be involved" and then have them get a way better job offer somewhere else

As of right now, it's coming. From what Brandon was saying on the Kinda Funny interview, streaming will be the focus from the get go (easiest for them to do), followed by video content. Reviews are low on the priority list, as they probably won't have the support to be a full fledged "review site"

really good to hear that interview on Kinda Funny. Hopefully this happens, we need the GT crew back.

Man, jist learned about it now. i don't go on GAF as much :(. But have great memoried of GT. I remember watching E3 2005 til last year with them. From Zelda Twlight Princess screening to the present. Man time flies, seems GAF will be one of the last bastions of gaming if and when IGN and GS go belly up. Live on GameTrailers

Nothing from Matt or Don yet. Doesn't mean they're not involved, but weird they did not tweet the same image.

While I love Don and hope he pops back in as a guest on the streams when he's able to, part of me hopes he got that Nintendo producer gig if he's not part of this. Seemed like a great fit.

I was being sarcastic w/ my comment. Shane is such a clown for sayin just stop visiting sites if you don't like the ad.

The announcement of the announcement. Hype!

Stop having intrusive and malware infested ads and I'll disable it.

I disable adblock on many sites because I trust them enough to not have that. Simple as that.

If they stop having ads full of malware and stop running hundreds of fucking scripts per page, then yeah, people will stop using Adblock and NoScript. Until then, people will keep using them to deal with shit like this:

Again, if that's too much for you, don't visit the site.

If I think a game is too pricey I don't go and pirate it.

Yeah GT had some really nasty ads, wtf was Shane on about?
Thankfully, things became more manageable with the move to YouTube.

That said I'd rather pay a sub for something I really care about, than having ads up the ass.
Sponsorships are also perfectly fine with me (mentioning audible in the podcast and that sort of thing).

This would be valid if 90+% of the sites on the internet didn't do this kind of thing. At that point, people are pretty justified in doing whatever it takes to keep their RAM from being flooded with useless crap and their CPUs running smoothly, instead of chugging to death on hundreds of pointless tracking scripts.

I don't think I had any real problems with GT's ads on the Viacom player besides the sheer number of them, but that player broke so often that scraping the video URLs with AdBlock was a better option anyway.

That's fair enough, but to say that they didn't have shitty invasive ads is just bullshit.
The way I did it, I just went there, downloaded the video (when the download button worked) and bailed out asap.
That's not a smart way to entice people to stick around and watch more videos.
Complaining about ad blocker and telling people to fuck off if they don't like sketchy ads, is the typical bullshit to come out of Shane's mouth, one of the reason why I think GT improved when he left, tbh.
Just missing the real problem, because of his boneheaded arrogance.

With the switch to YouTube, thankfully all that bollocks went away.

With adblockers like uBlock Origin you can select what to block and only block known malware providers and trackers. That obviously doesn't stop malware on legit channels, but most of those should be covered if you block flash. The high number of scrips still suck, but most of the pages I visit are light on scripts and I'd also blame the trend of flashy animations. I don't need your fucking drop down menus that break when I use a mobile device or weird scrolling that breaks when I use PGUP/-DN/HOME/END.

I don't know how much influence Shane had over this - don't know his exact role when he was at GT -, since ads are mostly run by the sales department or external companies. Editorial has zero influence there and can't just pull bad ads offline or something. I get the frustration with adblock users then, since those do have a direct impact on the editorial team in terms of layoffs and even closures because of lack of money. If 30-50% of your users block ads, that is also 30-50% less employees you can put on content - a real problem for gaming websites that are almost all understaffed.

That's not what i'm talking about.

I'm saying the the arrogant position he's holding over this thing, is the same type of attitude that made him insufferable on Invisible Walls (i'm hardly the only one to think so, too).
I know the monetization of the site was largely outside of his control, and complaining about AdBlock is fair enough to a point, but you also have to examine what the hell you're doing and how you can fix it beyond "if you don't like it go away!".
And not having terrible and invasive ads is a good place to start.
You have to work with the audience and find common ground, because there's enough content out there for people to move on and forget about you, if you keep being abrasive and boneheaded.

Note: A little pic I threw together this morning from my awesome time at PSX 2016 with krae_man, Bryan, Wario64 (not shown), and others. Meeting some of the GT crew was definitely my highlight of the show!
