Given the speculation based on the patents, that would seem to be the case. Also, extra controllers improve processing power of the console. And placement of haptic buttons wherever you want.

On topic, if it's a real leak (IF), it doesn't necessarily mean it's the final form factor.
Here's an actual early prototype of the Wii U Gamepad:

Nintendo also changed the 3DS style slide sticks to actual analog sticks before release. So anything can happen between now and reveal/release.
But they had a year to make that change. If Trev's source is to be believed, we're getting at least one of the NX devices this year.

I'm so disheartened by the negative reaction to this. Like I said before, I enjoy the "newness" of this, fake or not. Nintendo don't have many other options here. A true hardcore traditional game machine would flop because those gamers already have Playstations and Xboxes. This (again, if real) is a blend of two worlds and looks very versatile.

Also I'm sure there will be a peripheral that'll give folks real buttons. The virtual buttons aren't an issue at all for me personally.

Looks like a prototype... but a touch screen controller shouldn't be too farfetched. Haptic feedback could allivaite the lack of buttons... plus allow developers to change the control scheme to whatever they feel like.

Doubt it's fake. Why would someone spend the time and money to make a real looking controller just to troll peole?

With that being said, I hope it is fake. Looks awful, although it could be a dev kit unit and the retail version will look different.

Same reason we are any manufactured leak. People do it for the lulz.

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
For a second let us assume this is real. So any guesses on what game is displayed? I see a guy in a hood, but it seems like a really odd camera angle, even for a first-person game.

Reactions to this (fake) are interesting. Seems a lot of people just want more of the same shit, just new. I shouldn't be surprised I guess.

As always with NX, I'll wait patiently for official unveiling.

bish gets all the credit :)
Whatever new screen technology this is using will be usurped by the phone market months after this gets released. I guess they will at least be ahead for a month or two, unlike the gamepad screen which was years behind when it released.

I don't know if anyone has already noticed but there seems to be 3 buttons besides the B button.

This still doesn't change the fact that I am TeamFake.

I have a hard time believing this is real just because they already did the whole screen in the middle of a controller thing.

Unless it's a handheld.

Either way, looks fake.

Copied someone else's pancake recipe
So, if this true, we went from Iwata announcing NX at the press conference with DeNA on 17/3/2015, and no leak until exactly one year after (or one year one day Japan time perhaps). That is astonishing.

If that were real I think I would officially be done with Nintendo. Thankfully it's not real.

If the controller were a fucking rubix cube I'd probably still buy it for Zelda. Though I'm not sure how you'd play Zelda with a rubix cube. Might be cool for puzzle solving though I guess

Would it really take much time to change something like that? So long as they haven't begun mass producing it yet.

TO BE CLEAR. I'm in the state of mine where I can consider freeform screens possible on an NX controller. or in general on the NX.

But it won't look like that picture.

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
What a ridiculous"innovation".

I'll reserve judgement. Hopefully there's something else we're not seeing. Maybe a new sensor? More forms of interface?

I sure hope so, because just taking buttons away is pathetic.
