And that episode won for BEST WRITING at the Emmys.

Meanwhile, The Americans can't even get nominated for anything when it shits all over Game of Thrones in every aspect but budget. TRASH.

2015

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series "Do Mail Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?"

The best episode of season three lost best writing to the masterful and trenchant BAD PUSSY.

Hahaha complaining about something not getting nominated for an Emmy

The Americans is so good it may be one of my favorite shows. I had similar feelings about The Expanse but only after getting through like half of it. It was a bit of a slow burn, but it really gets good.

The Fall is generally excellent but my feelings on it are tapered a bit by how bad it got in the last episode of season 2

Don't forget about The Shield.

And yet when it happened it the book, did you really care? Did boycott reading asoiaf? Did you blame JRR Martin's poor judgement for writing such a scene?

Who are you to claim that I didn't care? Of course I fucking did. It's rape, and it's brutal. She didn't deserve that and neither did the readers.

But I don't blame George's judgement, because as Funky said, rape is a harsh and cruel element of the world he built. I don't have to like it, but to simply ignore that reality is not possible.

Also if you're trying to compare this to The 100 and drag me for it, don't even bother. Because these are two very different issues done by two very different people and have no relevance to each other whatsoever.

The really amazing thing about The Americans is how we're now four seasons in and the quality still hasn't dipped. Incredible.

Rape in show - tacky, tasteless, just for shock factor, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are hacks

Rape in book - "well I didn't really like it but you know, that's the universe, and it's a vital story to tell." GRRM is so talented, etc

But The Shield is amazing, AMAZING I tell you.

With Game of Thrones I got really into the TV show and I decided to read the books

I read book 3 both parts well and they were so interesting and really drew we in. Well written

Then I went to book 4... I cannot stress how badly written it was... It was such a drag I gave up

When I want to listen to someone talk about The Wire, I listen to that sweet dvd commentary

That's how most people react when they hit book four. It has some good moments but it's so poorly paced and padded that it's almost not worth it. Same with book five. Except the chapters set in the North in book five are some of the best in the series. The rest is trash.

Still waiting for book six to come out this millennium.

And people still don't know about it.

Wait, maybe the show is great because of that.

Most likely.

If it had gotten popular you can bet it'd be going completely off the rails by now and its sedate and purposeful storytelling would be out the window.

I feel like the Americans is already pretty over the top.. It's very entertaining but let's not pretend this is a super reserved, highly cerebral show

It's as reserved as a TV show could ever be.

Most show wish they could film a scene like that recent Tainted Love killing.

Because I still need to watch it. :(

But I might order the Blu-ray soon.
Do it now

I never thought about listening to the commentary, I imagine it would be super interesting

*puts it on list of things to do*
Because The Wire ended years ago, I talked about it back then.

It is the greatest though. You're right about that.

Fair enough. I really need to do a rewatch one of these days.

That scene is still too much. Not quite as much as a certain suitcase scene in season three tho.

Incidentally, it made me learn that version of Tainted Love I know so well is actually a cover.

The fact book5 is more of the same makes me give up even bothering to read the books

The pacing in book 4 is atrocious and
no Tyrion :(

Might not bother reading the books anymore tbh

I have so many questions, yet I want none of them answered.

So The Americans and The Expanse are good shows, yes?

Beach girl just messaged me, three close friends are leaving to live elsewhere so that's where all her time has gone, been thinking about if we are compatible and apologises for leaving me hanging, really sorry because I am a super nice guy, she hasn't been making romance a priority for way too long, do I think we are compatible or did she just not give it enough time.

Just kill me now.

Ouch. "Super nice guy" should never be used when trying to re-kindle any sort of romance.

Have a cold one and let it blow over.

Uuuuh, if it's not a puzzle, racing or sports game? I can't think of a single one, but some form of conflict is basically required for all genres outside of those three.
conflict doesn't have to be violence though.

like why no political thriller?
I guess the big problem is that non-physical interactions between people are hard to make anything other than an adventure game but still, so many adventure games include violence too. like not even something like life is strange avoids that
Not quite sure what the first part means, (please explain more so I can understand), but I would like to see that list too.

first part was probably unnecessary. i was on a bit too much of a roll...(there were a few threads and stuff previously too)
but i just meant most people actively complaining about sexualization in games are complaining about female sexualization which isn't entirely the same argument as overall. The general argument is way less vocal but thats largely because its so ingrained in our culture that people will consider it without anyone arguing it
but yeah it probably could have gone without saying

but I'm just clarifying so we really don't have to get into this again... :p

It sounds like the TV show/Book series, written by GRRM, sounds like I would need a couple of stiff drinks/bordering on black out drunk to be able handle some of the subject matter at hand there.

I realize my favourite movie of all time, Blade Runner, has a implied rape scene and that's why I haven't watched it again. I genuinely have no idea how you would be able to that subject matter without having kid gloves about it.

I dunno about y'all handle that subject matter in the news, but anytime I hear about it, I kinda worry about all my lady friends and relatives.

The whole subject of using sexual assault as to be edgy and to be shocking, rather loathsome and kinda immature or just shitty.

I dunno that's just me, though.

All good Granadier, gave a girl in her late teens to early twenties a jump start today and she called me a "nice man" to her friend on the phone, it's obviously all over for me.

Misha, we can add dating Sims to your list, but how the hell you'd make an enjoyable political thriller without it just being a choose you own adventure / Telltale type of thing I don't know.

Multiple people with VR interacting online? Now it's just virtual theatre games.

I mean, you could always swing for the other team and try your luck there. /s

David cage style game
yeah thats the exact same thing

oh I know. werewolf/mafia style games. not all of them need to end with killing someone and its all about setting it up for verbal conflicts. maybe there would be a way to expand that to single player and fit that kind of thing in a lot more nuanced scenarios.

I actually have an interesting game concept fairly related to that style. Multiplayer game. you each play emotions/needs of a character where you all have specific goals you want to fulfill. you each get to take a turn (without the other people knowing which emotion you are) with controlling the character and you interact with things to try to make your thing happen. Like envy might want to embarrass someone, hunger just wants a sandwich, loneliness wants to talk to someone, addiction tries to get you a cigarette etc. Multiple people's needs can be fulfilled at the same time but some of them contradict eachother

There are lots of board games with no violence that could easily be turned into video games, but I think most would be obvious as 'board games' — e.g. Greed Corp is clearly a board game, but with a mechanic that is most easily done on a computer (different parts of the board changing heights). Greed Corp is otherwise not a good example of this due to the violence you inflict on the other players and the environment.

Sorry I missed the discussion on sexualization/women in games— tempted to wade into the thread. I wish more games were even handed. I especially wish GTA were better (strange that SR is somehow better in this regard).

Don't think I'll ever read or watch GoT— I guess I don't feel the need to be hit over the head about how shitty things are and dragged through an emotional quagmire when characters I like are victimized when people in real life I care about are victimized already.

Has anyone read Iain Banks and GRRM and care to comment on the differences between how the two write terrible scenes? Iain Banks (whom I love, despite the following), seems to have written torture scenes with a certain amount of glee (am thinking of Use of Weapons, Consider Phelabas, and The Algebraist).

Tracer debacle still up for discussion, or should we pack that away?

Personally I'm not in the mood to debate (well I probably would but I don't want to) so only if its something I'd agree with :p

really though, you can if you want. I don't think I have anything to add unless theres a new development.

if and when we start a similar discussion up again, I'd like to talk about the potential for games that largely revolve around sexuality in a non-juvenile way

I started reading sunstone recently and I'm surprised how much I'd find a bdsm related comic engaging(of course the really nice art helps). would definitely like to see more things like that in media. I could definitely see some dating sims fitting that bill but you know how the general perception of them goes

A Sex Criminals video game adaptation? Would that be a heist game or a puzzle game?
