WSJ: Sony Plans New PlayStation for Graphics-Heavy Games

I don't recall phone publishers completely dropping at one point in time the iPhone 5 for example, and then only making games for the 5S. It's not the same thing at all.
New software increasingly runs like garbage on older phones. 6 years ago the latest iPhone was the iPhone 4. Even last years OS ran like garbage on it.

What you described is fragmentation. It is the difference of user experiences between different devices. Be that loading times, texture sizes, frame rates etc. It is not just the ability or inability of software to run on different devices.

What do you think it is?

Options. That is what I think. Are PC's fragmented?

How about someone who affords to put in a faster HDD that does load faster than your stock one?

This is an ice cream cone pic argument through and through.

It is not fragmented if everyone is gaming on the same ecosystem. Steam is not fragmented at all, lol.

I don't think it will be that hard for amd to get Sony a 4 tflop + Apu at roughly the same cost or slightly more than the launch Apu. At least expecting an apu that is servicable for 4k 30 fps aaa. Im expecting games to have an option for 60fps 1080p with more bells and whistles, or 4k 30fps with mediumish settings. Expecting a $499 msrp.

Even with the new fab process, wouldn't top of the line still be prohibitively expensive? I guess a better question would be: what do you mean by "top PC"?

well i guess I would be happy if it lets me play The witcher 3 with top ultra PC settings. if the new PS4 can pull that off Im in. i would pay 499 for it :)

So does PC gaming and that seems to be doing quite well.

You're underestimating the enthusiasm of console gamers to drop another $400 for the latest and greatest in console hardware.

As a PC primary person there's a big difference between replacing a part and replacing the whole thing.

This E3 is going to be crazy town. Prepare for a lot of worried/elated games writers making terrible analyses and predictions via podcast.

Because WSJ didn't use a 3D printer for their article.

Doesn't Sony's top line 4K tv's come with X1 upscaling processors? Why would we need an in built scaler when they have their own built into the TV's themselves?

I fully believe that Sony's plan is to create a PS4 capable of outputting games at 4K native. They'd be fucking stupid not to. Why wouldn't they go the whole length if they know it's gonna piss consumers off anyway by bringing something equal to a half measure.

Of course it's gonna be about £500-£600 but people will pay it and those costs are gonna come down eventually anyway. Isn't that what people are saying about VR? That it'll take time for the masses to accept it and jump on board when the price lowers.

Fragmentation is around whether this system is released or not.

My internet is faster then yours

Wiimote vs Controller
Cross play among platforms

Somehow me manage.

You still don't have to worry about upgrading for several years. The box you bought is still going to offer the same experience regardless of a fancier version existing.

The upside is the PlayStation you eventually buy will run your old games better. That's a great thing!

I mean, that's not even a given. None of these speculations are a given. There's not a single thing confirmed. It was a month ago people had somehow came to the conclusion that Microsoft was putting out a modular Xbox. This PS4.5 is exactly that imo.

If this just ends up being a PS4 with a 4K capable blu ray player and upscaler are people going to be mad or relieved?

And the VR box built in maybe - relieved. I think that's all it should be. A bit of the way into year 2 of the PS4 is no time to release a more powerful SKU when we're just getting into the meat of things with optimization. What incentive is there to squeeze it for all its worth when there's simply more powerful hardware sitting there for the using.

I can see so many ways releasing PS4.5 could turn out badly for customers and Sony.
Don't see many downside not making PS4.5 thou.

It's not a given, but it's been talked about by one of Sony's head honchos in Japan.

Wish I could remember where I saw it.

For some reasons, I'm now much more excited about this E3 than I was before. Kinda happy that great performance on consoles will no longer be a wishful thinking.
