Man if this new PS4 is as good as todays top PCs then Im in. if its just marginally better, I wont pick it up.
How much do you think a top of the line gaming PC costs? What are you willing to pay for the PS4K?

New software increasingly runs like garbage on older phones. 6 years ago the latest iPhone was the iPhone 4. Even last years OS ran like garbage on it.I don't recall phone publishers completely dropping at one point in time the iPhone 5 for example, and then only making games for the 5S. It's not the same thing at all.
isn't it already capable of that?
What you described is fragmentation. It is the difference of user experiences between different devices. Be that loading times, texture sizes, frame rates etc. It is not just the ability or inability of software to run on different devices.

Even with the new fab process, wouldn't top of the line still be prohibitively expensive? I guess a better question would be: what do you mean by "top PC"?
If this just ends up being a PS4 with a 4K capable blu ray player and upscaler are people going to be mad or relieved?
Why are ps4.5 discussion threads allowed when NX discussion threads aren't?
Because WSJ didn't use a 3D printer for their article.
So does PC gaming and that seems to be doing quite well.
You're underestimating the enthusiasm of console gamers to drop another $400 for the latest and greatest in console hardware.
As a PC primary person there's a big difference between replacing a part and replacing the whole thing.
What? Lol
To upgrade your pc you buy a new gpu, more memory or something like that. One part as opposed to the whole thing. What? Lol
He's saying that usually when you upgrade a PC, it's single parts and not the whole PC

That it's not comparable to buying a whole new ps4.I know this, lol. It is a sad argument. What is the merit of it?

It's a heck of a lot cheaper, that's what!
The price ends up being about the same though so I don't see your logic there.
Anyone can sell their old PS4 like GPU.

Upgrading a single part as opposed to replacing the entire machine.
This will fragment the user base. Sony can't really think this is a good idea, could they?

That doesn't make it a good idea.Nintendo certainly thinks it's a good idea.
This E3 is going to be crazy town. Prepare for a lot of worried/elated games writers making terrible analyses and predictions via podcast.

You still don't have to worry about upgrading for several years. The box you bought is still going to offer the same experience regardless of a fancier version existing.
The upside is the PlayStation you eventually buy will run your old games better. That's a great thing!
Because WSJ didn't use a 3D printer for their article.
Upgrading only one part compared to upgrading your entire box. And if you're going to spend the same, the upgrade will be larger. What is?

This is simple logic.
I can see so many ways releasing PS4.5 could turn out badly for customers and Sony.
Don't see many downside not making PS4.5 thou.
For starters, getting leapfrogged by the XB1.5.
I mean, that's not even a given. None of these speculations are a given. There's not a single thing confirmed. It was a month ago people had somehow came to the conclusion that Microsoft was putting out a modular Xbox. This PS4.5 is exactly that imo.
Oh please, like anyone would even give a shit, the xbox might as well not even exist at this point.
For some reasons, I'm now much more excited about this E3 than I was before. Kinda happy that great performance on consoles will no longer be a wishful thinking. This E3 is going to be crazy town. Prepare for a lot of worried/elated games writers making terrible analyses and predictions via podcast.
