Comes from an interview with Kimishima in today's Asahi Shinbun

http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASJ4Z0R76J4YPLFA002.html

Translation/summary from
Kimishima hints that Nintendo is looking at a production system where "we can do as much as we can ourselves."
Kimishima also says that Nintendo would like to have it's first movie ready within the next 2-3 years.

Some clarification
In the interview, Kimishima mentions the 1993 Super Mario movie as the reason why Nintendo is NOT looking at live-action movies.
Instead he seems to prefer 3D CD/anime-type content where Nintendo should produce as much by itself as possible.
Also note that he does NOT give a time frame. He says the first title won't be ready this year but also won't take 5 years.

In theaters?

Either way, I'm hoping it's either Zelda, Kid Icarus, Splatoon, Xenoblade, Star Fox, or Fire Emblem.

I wonder if it's influenced my Disney's recent BO domination? I just hope they pick Zelda as one of those projects.

I can see them making their own studio down the road. I don't mind this sort of expansion where Nintendo becomes more of a media company. They can be a media company while still being a toy company.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
I'd like it to be a Smash Bros movie. Covers tons of IPs in one go.

While it's not the safest bet (which would be working with an established partner that is known to put out quality content) it would be cool if they pull it off right.
The shorts they've put out are really good and I imagine they can share assets like they did with the Star Fox short which used the CG renders from the game while adding new shaders/textures

Nintendo Cinematic Universe about to happen?

I'm always interested in if they would actually do this. Have all the franchises take place in the same universe.

Stuff like Mario, Kirby and Animal Crossing is pretty easy to have different kingdoms that you could travel to.

Metroid, Star Fox and F-Zero could all take place in different parts of space.

Fire Emblem, Zelda and Kid Icarus I think could also exist in different places on the same world.

The question is how would stuff that's very different work? Does Luigi come into a Zelda dungeon and help beat a boss?

Question is, can they top Legend of the Crystal Coconut? an adventure of dong expanding proportions.

Really though I dug the Pikmin shorts so hopefully that's a promising sign.

Mario, Star Fox, Kirby, and Metroid could make pretty easy transitions to film. Zelda would have to be re-tooled in a lot of ways.

No bald cap? Lies!
I'd like it to be a Smash Bros movie. Covers tons of IPs in one go.

They'd be smart to make an amiibos movie that basically apes The Lego Movie and Toy Story. Use all their major IPs, get people interested in possible solo features, especially for less popular/well known franchises like Metroid and FE and such and be able to market and sell a fuck ton of amiibos. Cause really it's all about that merchandising.

Wasn't there an Animal Crossing anime film? How was that?

Very good, but since it was Japan only its revenue was small, but well enough.

Nintendo cinematic universe setting up the inevitable smash bros (avengers) movie would be really cool.

Post credits scene. Donkey Kong is hanging in his treehouse and a knock on the door. CGI Kimishima his eyes obscured by a glasses lens glare. He produces an Amiibo Card with Donkey Kong's name on it with the Smash logo.

"Would you like to play."

Looks like there's a pretty big article here with the whole interview, but you have to register to read the whole thing.

Google translate says Kimishima recognizes the Super Mario Bros. live action movie wasn't very good. Doesn't have to be a Hollywood company they partner with necessarily but needs global reach.

They tease about Zelda before it asks you to register to read the other 2/3rds of the article.

I don't know what that quote means, but in terms of actual production/animation Nintendo needs to just team with a studio with a good track record and let them do what they do while maintaining creative control over the story. The Animal Crossing movie and Layton movie are both pretty good but I think Nintendo would aim for better.

They should get the Project X Zone people to help out. They're great at making all sorts of different properties feel like they exist in the same space. I was pretty impressed by their pikmin shorts so hopefully they can build off that.

At least you can talk. Who are you?
2018 seems really early if they haven't started anything yet. Surely they'd have Mario as a forefront for their first proper movie though.

Fucking FINALLY
