Kotaku: XB1 Slim 2016, More Powerful XB1 Scorpio/VR 2017, iterative boxes from now on

The consoles are severely under-powered. I wouldnt have minded to stick to one HW had they been more powerful to begin with. The xbox especially. But to stick to this under performing console for another 3-4 years? No thanks.

No they're not. Uncharted 4 looks better than most PC games I've seen, and DOOM is beautiful in its own way too while running like butter.

If you're going to chase the latest greatest graphics card, they will always be "Severely underpowered".

sigh....rip consoles. It was fun while it lasted. That so many people on here seem fine with this is bumming me out.

Who played Rise of the Tomb Raider or Uncharted 4 and is like "ugggh we need more power sooner this suuuucks!" ?

Me. Because I wanted to play them at 60fps with better draw distance and lighting.

Not me that's for sure, and not some of the people on youtube. Uncharted 4 is mind blowingly good IMHO. Ratchet and clank was fantastic.

I'm ready for this fall, and looks at these games, I dont see myself saying " this is weak, I need more power".

No one asked for these consoles not even developers did. It's one thing if when they were building these they went with weak CPU's and GPU's but wanted to make them more profitable than they have in the past. You can't have your cake and eat it too. This move to me is them wanting higher profit margins on hardware regardless of the possible negative long term effects this can have on the gaming industry.

This move is them wanting to jump in on VR asap.

Heres the thing though

What are the implications of a PS4 Neo announcement if Microsoft doesnt want to announce the Scorpio?

Would they feel pressured to reveal their cards there and then to make sure coverage gets out there?

2017? Seems like Sony beat MS to the punch again.

I know PS4 is running riot but if people are happy with it and are lukewarm to a Neo upgrade, Microsoft can hype the wait for the better device with Scorpio. It may not be better in some ways but you can turn being late to the party into an advantage. Tease something Xbox as something ground breaking, mysterious is coming 2017, turn the hype up.

I would harp back to that original Xbox dark background logo and that subtle heartbeat I. The play more campaign with 2017. Get people talking.

I would bet there is no Scorpio or Neo at E3

Well we can imagine the new Xbox will be on the scene for a year or two max before the potential PS5 becines a reality that will more than likely leapfrog the new Xbox again... fun and games. Oculus support is good to see and something that could cause me to show some interest in Xbox again. If Xbox effectively becomes a decent PC in a box then that can be a good thing.

A PC in a box locked to one store front, mind you.

It always sucks to me how decent gaming PCs aren't something you can just go to a store and pick up, ala a console. Xbox might be that kind of PC, but being tied to a single storefront might not make that convenience worth the trade.

I'm not sure MS cares any more though. Thurrots speculation, longer term, of Xbox as a software platform makes sense to me. Xbox as Microsoft's Steam competitor, Xbox hardware as Steam Machines, albeit more locked down to their store, and presumably more subsidised as a result. But in any case, there's a radically reduced dependency between the store/platform and any one box.

why would sony announce neo so early and cripple ps4 sales ? unless launch is imminent which would have leaked already ...

You have more powerful hardware with new dev kits, what do you mean "not from scratch' the only thing they don't have to worry about is architecture (probably) but that still means they have to start over, adjust for the new version, use the new tools, etc.

I mean they won't have those periods in between cycles where they have to get used to an entirely new system and architecture.

This. I always find it funny that people think these things are so easy to just throw together. When a company release a product they are already R&D'ing generations down the line.

I think that nowadays it's more or less dependant on the software part which deals with hardware differences. Getting this “right“ with a decent and thin attraction layer is more important as we won't see stuff like Cell anymore.

Thats definitely somethin that could happen

But what if Scorpio goes first and Neo doesnt show up at all? I mean they showed that 360 E along with the Xbone.

Oh jesus, its psychological warfare

Neo and Scorpio are like two shrouded wild cards that need to be executed perfectly

This makes me glad I sold my Xbox One and went all in on my Windows 10 gaming PC. I want to play those Xbox exclusives.

That's what i'd like to do too, though there is no confirmation about all next games on Windows 10 yet, for example Gears 4 is Xbox One only, i guess E3 will clarify better, also Final Fantasy XV won't release on PC, so i can't sell Xbox One yet

I hope so, because that would mean my consoles aren't old tech for another year or at least 6 months longer.

But isn't Sony making devs patch games starting October? That would indicate a fall launch no?

Neo being a no show at E3 doesn't mean they can't launch in the fall

yeah for sure, but having some neo info out there right now gives them a lot of time to react where they can. Not everything is set in stone.

They still will be under-powered, now with devs not being familiar and getting down and dirty with the hardware.

Yep, as was the Sony one's as well. Gauging market interest for something that has not been done before in the console space.

Maybe they'll see the backlash or actually have a business meeting with marketing and top strategists and see this plan will not work at all and makes zero sense.

I thinking MS will ditch the Xbox One branding for whatever this 2017 machine ends up being.

I think it's best to ditch that name completely with a fresh start. I'm thinking that if this machine is late 2017 it's going to be the follow up to the X1.

This gen has really felt like a holdover one. Both the X1 and PS4 have felt vastly underpowered for the most important games i..e third party games.

I didnt have a problem last gen in terms of power because then, the HW was actually impressive for the time. This gen was pretty clear to me from the start, they saw that a lot of people bought a Wii and figured "hey we can cut costs on power, people dont care!"

Well, clearly people care. This HW is biting them in the ass, especially on the VR side of things. Big mistake that theyre now correcting.

So wasn't the PS2 compared to Xbox and Gamecube yet it had amazing games regardless. PS4 was under-powered on launch, yet we are getting games like drivclube, ratchet and clank, bloodborne, uncharted 4, horizon.

Power isn't everything Nintendo knew about that. This will create more problems down the road especially if this becomes a trend. If it's just for a stop gap because they made the decision with the weak hardware in the beginning and going forward are still doing regular console cycles that's a different story.

But fingers point to iterative being the way they want to do things now.

I mean they won't have those periods in between cycles where they have to get used to an entirely new system and architecture.

IF THEY stick with AMD, and something similar to x86 they wont have to anyway. It wont be that big of a change like it was going from POWER PC architecture to x86. They would be just going to something more powerful but with similar architecture that gives them way more power, and flexibility.

Saying going iterative makes everything easier transition wise for developers is a cop out. If they stay the course and go with better hardware that's still supports or has x86 based architecture there wont be a lot developers have to do. They wont have to start from scratch.

If MS is going with Zen+Vega+HBM2 combo for ultimate 2017 performance, then it will be a good thing if [Jaguar-based] Neo launches this year.

It remains to see what will this "steamboxfitication" of Xbox brand do to the MS gaming. Will it confuse people, lead to the dissatisfaction of Xbone users who bought their console for exclusives that will now arrive also on PC, or will all go well...

In any case, I don't expect Neo or Scorpio announcements at E3. IMO Sony will announce Neo at Gamescom/PGW/TGS for Oct launch, and MS can announce Scorpio at CES for March launch.

I wouldn't be surprised if they announce their future plans for the Xbox console with more details compared to Phil's comments back in March.

End the conference with a tease of the new console.

Yep, technically it could really just be a spiced up Xbone, but a complete rebranding can make real results

This 2017 machine will (and I think should) be given a new name and a completely new visual image

Didn't Shinobi say Neo would be announced later in the year?

I think Scorpio will be announced around the Windows Redstone 2 update in the spring, along side Surface 5 and whatever they're doing with phones.

The 2017 Xbox, which is codenamed Scorpio, will have a more powerful GPU, according to three people familiar with this model, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to speak about Microsoft’s plans.

This was too easy.

I am cool console iterations, Microsoft and Sony will probably iterate every 3 years or so. I dont think it will be every year.

So you're cool with console iterations just because you think you can predict the future?
Yes, maybe Sony and MS will release new consoles every 3 years. That doesn't mean that new consoles are not released every year, if you think about. This won't bother you if you stay loyal to one brand. Otherwise, have fun...

I personally believe that we will see 2 year cycles if this strategy succeeds.
If MS manages to eat Sony's lunch with Xbox2, Sony will start working on the next iteration the moment this happens.

If the Oculus thing is true, PSVR just got quite the slap in the face, since it makes much more sense to get a Rift, which works on PC and Xbox One instead of a VR device that only works on the PS4.

but if you have a PC that can drive an oculus rift, and MS releases all their games on PC, why would you want the xbox?

I do like the general sound of it though - OR compatible suggests at least GTX970 performance which should be doable on a smaller node - maybe MS will get rid of the embedded ram and go with GDDR5 to save die space? All games on Xbox/PC basically makes xbox a convenient living room PC for gaming which isn't necessarily a bad thing ( although compatibility with steam would really seal the deal)

What?

Clearly people DON'T care, considering the Ps4's sales. With graphics, we've hit diminishing returns. I'm glad PC exists to push the envelope, but PS4 is absolutely in "good enough" range for millions of people. Hell, more than good enough.

VR is indeed the only way this makes sense, I get why we need more power for that I suppose. It's also entirely unproven and maybe not worth risking the traditional console lifespan. I'd rather have them wait to see how it turns out on PC, then worry about VR for next gen consoles.

And gens don't have to be 6 or 7 years, I would love a return to a 5 year lifespan. That would mean next-gen is only 2.5 years away from now.

Im not sure how I feel about yearly or almost yearly iterative consoles. Unlike goddamn iPhones there's no contract with Xbox that will let me upgrade my console with little to no extra payment needed. And I've been rocking my iPhone 5S no problem and before that one I had an iPhone 3GS. I'm not one that upgrades tech every time theres a new one. I fear this might fragment the audience.

lol if anything scorpio is NOT 1.5 like neo .... "new and revamped architecture" points to a bigger upgrade
You'd need it. A GPU in itself would not bring what is necessary to properly run VR. I don't think it's going to be some big improvement for games.
