Rumor: Bethesda will announce Skyrim remaster at E3

Do you remember how badly Skyrim ran on last gen?

I was ready to be all negative about this, but this is a good point.
Just because PC owners have played a decent version of Skyrim, doesn't mean there won't be tangible benefits for non-PC owners.

If they add mod support its super easy to get a very polished version of that
Realistic Needs + Diseases, Frostfall and a few others and you're good

I know there are mods for everything. I'm just trying to think of what Bethesda would add to the game that makes sense, since they did this before with Fallout. I guess it's possible that mod support basically excuses them from having to add anything meaningful to the game. It could be a truly bare bones release.

If only my penis was as big as my GamerScore!
I would only play this again if they make some updates to some of the systems and UI and preferably AI. Know it wont happen though.

Technically true but skyrim is probably bethesda's most ridiculously well optimized game, it ran near maxed a few months after release with an early enb some texture and lighting mods at 30fps on my laptop from 2009. The specs of that laptop were like an ancient i5, 4 gigs of ram and a 1 gig of vram integrated chip.

You don't need a hardcore rig to get an HD treatment out of skyrim.

The cynic in me suspects that the HD skyrim is just gonna be steady 30 fps with the 4k texture pack, some lighting improvements, some post processing improvements running at 1080p and hopefully bethesda net integration for consoles with maybe a few UI improvements. That would be something that definitely puts the game on the map for console users who have enjoyed mods on fallout 4.

As for the PC version (if there is even one)? Considering skyrim is still one of the most played games on steam this would just an awkward release to me. Especially since this likely won't entice any pc user to upgrade on visual upgrades at all and Bethesda net integration is whatever since we have the steam workshop and the nexus mod manager, which is a wasted opportunity since the PC skyrim community is huge and still playing the game!

skyrim was fine on 360

I played 200 hours of Skyrim on 360 and loved it - but by today's standards, it is bad. It screen tears to hell, for one thing, and regularly runs mid-20 fps. It's also low res, and has low res textures, and the engine INI values are tweaked low too. I returned to Skyrim on Xbox 360 recently after playing on PC for a while, and god, it is rough looking back.

Fallout 4 runs 1080p30 on Xbox One with medium to high PC settings,, and it's well known they ported Skyrim to Xbox One during development of Fallout 4 - so I imagine Skyrim would run 1080p30 on Ultra, with mod support.

I would have probably played it in 2013-2015 space (as I missed out on Skyrim initially) but I don't even have time for the genuine new-releases in 2016 so... too late.

I was only a few hours into Skyrim when my console died, so it'd been one of my most-wanted remasters from the start of this new generation. Now that it's been another three years, though, I'm not sure how much I care anymore.

Where? Can't find it on their site.

A PlayStation 4 and Xbox One remaster of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is rumoured to be announced at Bethesda's E3 conference this Sunday, 12th June. We'll be reporting from it live; check our E3 2016 guide for conference timings.

Eurogamer understands this rumour to be true, and we've also heard Bethesda will announce The Evil Within 2, Wolfenstein 2 and re-announce Prey 2 during the conference.

I think this will be the case. Allow mods and let the community deal with everything else, sadly

That would take FAR more money and resources that would be better spent on the new ES game. A Skyrim remaster is a relatively quick cash-in that doesn't take a ton of resources to pull off.

If the rumors of a Prey sequel are true then I respectfully disagree. They're already going to be wasting a ton of money/resources, why not do it on Morrowind :D

This better not be delaying progress on the new one at all. Are there really that many people clamoring for this? Don't get me wrong, it was one of my favorite games of last gen but I figured just about everybody had already played it and would be more interested in sinking endless hours into a new one.

It was pretty obvious when Bethesda set up Bethesda.net that they were going to do this. I also don't forsee them putting much work into it; probably the latest version off Steam with the Bethesda "high-res" graphics built in (which is hilarious, because the official high-res graphics from Beth are terrible and use more resources than the normal graphics without looking significantly better.)

If they did this to resell Skyrim with "mods enabled" as the sole benefit from the original release, you can expect rampant mod theft of Nexus mods on Bethesda.net, and a whole lot of Skyrim modders exiting the scene due to the drama it will cause. It won't be the death of the Skyrim mod scene, but I would expect to see a significant decline in mod creation for the PC scene.

Please let this be real.

But please, for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE don't be another 20 fps slide show like the PS3 version.

I'm almost certain there won't be one. Wouldn't make any sense at all unless there's new expansions or whatever

I think this is firmly aimed at console only folk. In which a remaster makes perfect sense

I would love, love a proper updated version of Morrowind on a better engine / graphics (without dumbing down things). I really love the magic system there and even like the combat (yes, even with RNG).

PS4 is much easier to develop for and much more similar to a PC, so I don't think that will be an issue.

My real question is whether or not it will look better than the PC version with the mods my Alienware Alpha can run.

After 170 hours of Skyrim I feel like I'm done. I certainly don't feel like starting a new character.

For PC to make sense there would have to be some significant and fundamental improvements to the engine. It would have to basically be running on the Fallout 4 engine. Maybe if it had fewer loading screens along with visual improvements.

But unless the mod kits and whatnot were the same I think the existing modding community would be hard-pressed to uproot and move to a slightly better version of the same game.

Out of the box? Doubtful; they'd need to do serious work on upgrading all the textures in the game to do that and redo the lighting system from the ground up and I don't see them putting that much work into this. I would wager this is just a cash-in to gain access to the mod scene for console users. Maybe include the "high-res" textures Bethesda created after the game shipped back in 2012.

Yep. I certainly don't expect it to look any better than vanilla Fallout 4. But as long as I can use mods I'll be happy.

I would say even that would be a stretch. If it comes with the free high-res texture DLC included, it will look like this:

And run at a solid 60FPS. Vanilla Skyrim ran 60FPS for me with the high-res textures on a GTX 440. A PS4/XB1 should have no problem with it.

I'd be content with that. Honestly I'd rather have better fps than better graphics.

Pretty underwhelmed by this news. As people have said I'd have preferred either an updated Morrowind or something new.

Personally I'd have liked an Oblivion remaster with updated character models. Who knows, maybe they'll surprise us.

Played through the bulk of the game and DLC on PS3 but had to give up as it was running so poorly it became overwhelmingly frustrating.

I'd love it if I could somehow carry on from my PS3 save file on the PS4. Probably too much to expect, doubt I could be bothered to start over from scratch.

Why is everyone so bitter about this?

The work was already done. They ported Skyrim as part of development for Fallout 4, it's not like they stopped working on TES6 or whatever in order to port this game.

Uff but I need the Alternate Start mod right from the beginning. It is superior in every way to the normal opening drag.

Morrowind would of course benefit much more greatly from a remaster but how many teens have even heard of it? Skyrim makes much more sense business wise, unfortunately.

Probably a smart business decision as far as remasters go. Not for me personally, can't do another 100 hours of Skyrim and the PC version with mods is there if I ever feel the urge.
