Andrew House surprised by timing of Project Scorpio announcement

Microsoft trying to outsmart Sony makes sense. Unfortunately for them, they only ended up outsmarting themselves. I don't think that Sony ever planned to announce Neo at their conference - that spot may have been meant for a game that ended up as a no-show. It's not a completely new product like PSVR and it's not a brand new console, so it makes a lot of sense to make the formal Neo reveal closer to launch.

Adam Boyes tweeted it ended as it was planned, month's before. It was an odd ending though, it really did feel like a bit was missing.

If this forum was a good indication of what the general consumers cared about, Platinum would have had at least one game that didn't flop by now.

In the grand scheme of things, no, history has shown power isn't as important as stuff like the price, or what releases first, it's probably on the same level as exclusives, important, but most don't buy the system for it, as long as it has FIFA and CoD people are good.

I know that's right!

Anyway, whoever wins the next E3 will most likely set the momentum for the rest of the gen.

Could be a reason for MS's weaker game showing/lack of 2018+ titles this E3.

MS has always had a smaller "announce/release" cadence than Sony, so this isn't surprising.

2018+ is so far away.. Sony has always shown games so far ahead they sometimes show up at 3 E3 events before they are released. They won the E3 hype war last year, all with games that could be still over 2 years out.

PS4 succeeded because it's a global device. Remove every country but the US and UK and the two are more or less tying.

And here's a great example of the boring reality that just doesn't make good console war fodder on english-speaking forums and comment sections.

If they want to improve the fortunes of the xbox, one of the first things they should do is try to sell it outside of the us/uk. But alas. More power will restore the balance of nature and put xbox back in #1 where it had reigned supreme for at least a hundred years. And everyone will live happily ever after.

Isn't PSX usually in December?

But Osiris Black who first leaked everything said 2017. I'm expecting 2016, but we really don't know for sure.

I'm going by this quote of his:

The first unofficial date I had heard for the Neos release was March of next year but there are mixed messages as of right now.

Which makes it sound like he's way less certain on the release date than the other things he said.

Then there's the timing of Neo games, there's the whole releasing before the holidays to hit the 20 million ps4s this year they're aiming for instead of right after, the musings from several insiders that it's going to be revealed at PGW or Gamescom - that combined with Andrews statements here really makes it certain for me that they're aiming for this year.

I would love to reply, but apparently saying anyone won any E3 is now smh/invalid until they get an award on TV.
(must wait for Neogaf poll thread?)

"The dynamics of the tech industry are such that there's a much heavier emphasis on immediate gratification than there was."

smh. He should tell that to the guy that lines up games for the E3 presentations.

I honestly felt like they needed to announce Scorpio and did a great job of doing so! Many people seem to forget that the Xbox One was originally a very different console before release.

The Xbox One details leaked before Microsoft was ready to address them and everyone had questions. Xbox leadership at the time wanted to stick to their original marketing plan and it cost them dearly. Everyone revolted against their new ideas because they didn't have the confidence to answer questions outside of their planned statements.

As a result, they ended up changing the console in the months before launch and basically turned the Xbox One into a copy of the PS4, albeit with less powerful hardware.

Phil's Scorpio announcement was his way of heading off the rumors for this new console. That's also why they addressed things like game and accessory compatibility. This was the Xbox team finally being proactive instead of reactive, and I think it will show in the years to come that it was a great move.

The responses are gold in this thread. I think this will be the last generation for Microsoft as everything will always be playable and they are planning for the future. I hope ps5 will be the same but ps2 remasters games have me worried.

Power doesn't matter? Did I dream all those DF face off threads? Grass Gate a figment of my imagination?

I won't deny power matters to a lot to a group of people, but I do think this is a very poor metric. I have no idea how many people read DF, for example, but I sincerely doubt that number comes any close to the tens of millions PS4 owners, for example. Only the people who care enough are the ones who post (both positive and negative).

I do think Sony goes in that direction as well. it is just that the PS3 hardware is something of it's own (and the PS2 as well).

Not really fiction though, is it? and your little whine isn't relevant to the point.

PS...

Power doesn't matter? Did I dream all those DF face off threads? Grass Gate a figment of my imagination?

Power only matters to the side that has it, that is something that will probably never change. Just flip flop current DF thread posters with their content and you have post scorpio DF threads.

you have some kind of data to correlate DF threads with console sales?

I wouldn't call Apples model as a model for progress. They announce things in cycles and many people who are in the apple ecosystem are trapped in the "Should I upgrade now???". Many people get burned when a revision comes out of thin air.

Furthermore people have to understand that Microsoft have been clear in their messaging that they are targeting 4K and VR. It makes sense that when 4K TVs and VR Peripherals; Remember, Microsoft doesn't have their own, are still so expensive and niche consumer products, that they are not in a hurry to release it.

I think people are confused because they imagine this leap in fidelity. I don't think so. I just think people need to understand that VR and 4K are insanely taxing. It's the same games, the same experiences, but having a 4k mode. We've already gears Gears 4 devs talk about about how Scorpio mode is scaleable / adaptive resolution.
And so; If you're someone who is not going to buy a 600-800 dollars VR headset or a 4K TV within the next couple of years, you have a good incentive to buy a regular Xbox One without worrying that your game wont work. And at the same time, you know what is on the horizon.

I think Microsoft hasn't been unclear. It's just confusing because these revision consoles are ending traditional console cycles as they have been known in the past. You really can look at the performance hit on PC when you crank it from 1080p to 4K in games. It makes perfect sense that Scorpio is for the resolution. And yes, with that resolution its going to look a lot sharper, if you have a 4KTV. Which I assume many people are not going to have.
And if you're someone who is on a budget or doesn't have a high allowance it might make sense to get a Xbox One now, and then invest in a Scorpio in 3-4 years or later as 4Kprices and VR prices go down. It's still incredible early for VR, and game adaption is not high and Microsoft doesn't even know if they will have their own VR.
I don't see the value or the sense in being a early adopter like this. You pay a vast premium for tech that has a lot of bugs and for low software support. I'd be more interested in buying a Xbox One S in a well priced bundle this Xmas.

MS tries to have a smaller announce to release cycle, but even Crackdown 3 and Scalebound were announced in 2014 and isn't coming out till next year.

Everyone tends to announce things too early. With the exception of probably Fallout 4 last year.

I for one am glad that Microsoft announced what they're up to. If Neo is out this fall then I would have preferred they showed it at E3. Sony making vague non-committal comments about their hardware does me no favors. I do really like the idea of an upgrade timed for this fall just based on the games coming out though.

Look, I gotta be real. I'm a Sony fan, through and through, and I hope Scorpio falls flat on its face and in its place have NX succeed.

Thank you

Edit: And please release PS4 Neo this fall.

Thank you x2

I don't buy it that they wouldn't announce no matter what. This industry is not completely like phone and tablets yet, you have to announce early to generate hype.

That's why they announced VR so much away from release, that's why they announced the price of psvr along their competition despite launching way further and it's exactly why Ms announced a more powerful hardware before sony had the chance.

Of course if neo releases this year they will sell because of availability, but just as some potential xbone users will now wait for Scorpio some potential neo buyers now know there's something better on the horizon.

If for nothing else, the idea that you'd open your show with a hardware announcement that gets immediately snowed over by the hardware announcement you make at the end of it is extraordinarily baffling. If someone is on the fence about the Xbox One, why would you give them a reason to jump in and then immediately take it away by making them wait for a better hardware situation?
Andrew answered that himself. The slim is available "now" is cheaper and will play the same games.

Powerful device is not what the mass market wants and they need affordable console with games that differentiate from others and also more games with good diversity for everyone which PS4 is doing. XB1 scorpio will make only hardcore fans/gamers happy (due to its price) to play their exclusive at high FPS/Resolution (not anymore as everything coming to PC from now, so hardcore gamers mostly have high end PC and only people left are fans). I don't see their high end solution going to be a success to extend their base and they could have waited until next E3 to reveal this as their target for this console is only minority and not for mass adoption.

After Andrew's talk with Financial Times, I'm much less convinced that NEO is coming out this year. Wasn't the original idea of a fall release based on that timeline that was "leaked" about games needing a NEO mode starting in October?

Looking at that from another angle, that might just be when they originally wanted to start stockpiling NEO-compatible games. Start in October and release it in Spring when they can say that X number of games already released will have dedicated modes for the new hardware.

I get the feeling with Crackdown showed it early because wanted to say "Look the cloud is actually a thing". Scalebound they probably wanted to let people know that there was a Platinum game coming. That was probably a good decision, I know people who bought Xbox One just for that game.

I always thought why the Scorpio was revealed was to stop the rumors and leaks surrounding it. They are set on a key date of holiday 2017 while we know nothing of when Neo is coming out. My opinion is that these upgraded consoles after 3 years is a slap to the face of the existing consoles owners who already invested a lot of their money on something that will be inferior in just 3 or 4 years in this gaming generation.

Project Scorpio announcement could be a bigger mistake than the Xbox One Reveal.

Most people will probably know there is a new console coming and it could result in people waiting for the next big thing.

They just gave away the coming 18 months to Sony.

I am most interested to see how this effects Sony.

The scorpio will be a beast. If the Neo is barely an upgrade compared to it...

Then again, Sony now has a huge install base. Will be interesting to see what the market decides.

I know why they showed them. I just think the whole narrative of Sony doesn't show any games that are coming out soon whereas Microsoft always shows games I'll be playing soon is silly.

His 'where's the box' line reminded me of Major Nelson's 'showing off a console without showing the console... that's one approach' tweet right after the PS4 reveal.

Funny how they've now copied that approach.

I have a slight inkling that they're going to bring forward the release date by about 6 months.

From what Phil has said, their affordable device for the mass-market will be the Xbox One and Xbox One S. Keep in mind that pricing on game consoles always lowers over time. Those who buy at launch will do so because they want the power, those who wait can pick up the One S in the meantime.

Their announcement wasn't just for the power-hungry, it was also for the late-adopters. They let everyone know that if you buy an Xbox One now, your games and accessories will be compatible with Scorpio when or if you decide to upgrade.

To be fair, Sony was most likely taking those 18 months regardless, so maybe MS are hoping Sony are equally damaged by the news.

Looks like dude is shaking his pants since their entire narrative this generation have been power and sales due to lack of exclusives.

If the Scorpio is as powerful as MS says this could put Sony in a difficult position.

Sony confirmed the PS4 long before it was shown. It's almost Major Nelson's tweet 2.

Not much will change. A 40% difference in power (let's say the rumored Neo specs are true) won't change much for the Xbox One consoles, just because they have a "more powerful" and "more expensive" one in their console family.

PlayStation shaking their pants? And you really believe that?
And did Sony confirm the PS4 1 1/2 years before it launched?

I've got the feeling Microsoft has halfway written off the XB1S already. The upgrade was probably mostly a part of their standard hardware iteration and production cost-cutting measures and not a major R&D push in and of itself, and they're most likely looking at what's coming on the horizon with PSVR and assuming that the XB1S is not going to create a particularly significant change in their fortunes dropping in that landscape.

So, they're putting it out because it's ready to go and they might as well, but they're announcing Scorpio now to let people know that (despite how it's likely to appear for the next year) they aren't completely bowing out with the arrival of PSVR.

If the rumour that Neo is going to be release during October this year is true, maybe they'll announce it at Gamescom or TGS.

But honestly, at this point I don't think the rumours are true.
The reason is because, if its going to be released during October, that means the manufacturing should have already begun quite a while ago.
And normally, we'd see some leaked photos of "something" relevant to the new hardware by now.
Like how parts of the iPhone or previous consoles leak before the announcement.
Since we're not seeing any of those, I think it'll be released next year at the earliest.

But this is all a guess.

Yes. The guy is shaking in his pants by the prospects of a new console 18 months out that belongs to a tarnished Xbox brand.

yeah, it may have not been the best business decision for Microsoft to announce Scorpio so early in terms of immediate sales impact, however, I do think that in the long term it could be good.

Imagine had they announced just the slim and said nothing of Scorpio, then a lot of people would have upgraded to the slim thinking it would be the best version for quite some time.

And then when they (would have) gone to announce Scorpio (hypothetically) next year, people would have gotten upset because they had just upgraded to X1s this past year and then it would be outdated already.

So from a customer standpoint, I think it is good that they are being a lot more transparent in telling us what their vision for the future is.

But this likely will hurt the impact that the X1s will have this fall significantly.
