I'm up in the air about this. I love, love, LOVE slashers. I have slasher memorabilia, listen to soundtracks, love the movies, have slasher tattoos, all that stuff. Give me teens in the woods being hunted and I'm a super happy dude every time. I never get tired of it, thematically.

The thing is I don't like games where all you can do is run and hide. Now, I guarantee you I'm getting the Friday the 13th game but that's only because I love Jason. I am seriously considering buying this just to try it out because I love the themes so much, but I'm almost 100% sure I would hate it.

Please convince me to buy this :(

You can host games so you can be the killer and hunt them down. There's actually a lot of people who prefer being the survivors, to play with friends and many find their gameplay surprisingly fun. While running and hiding from the monster is the deal, it does work quite a bit differently with a human-controlled killer and having an objective or two to focus on along with friends to work with.

I think the OST for the game we've heard so far do a good job at getting their own slasher horror vibes going.

Main Menu Theme
Also a variation when on the Survivors or the Killer screen when starting a game:
Survivors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmTduhLaQSA
Killer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eakXwJxyw7Q

Can hear some of the 'Chase' themes from the Beta here also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAp_40VdrAw

Got multiple killers and slasher settings. The beta only has the Trapper, but on release also have the Wraith and the Hillbilly (which isn't listed in the OP as full bio and details not fully revealed, but we know he uses a hammer and a chainsaw), and for settings on release outside of the forest we also have a farm and industrial setting.

Thanks for the info. It does sound pretty tempting!

If you like tense cat and mouse games and are fine with an early access game disguising itself as a retail release with numerous game-breaking and hair-pulling bugs and design decisions, I really recommend it. I've been playing it since last week and despite these issues, I'm still having fun.

My biggest concerns are how they're going to combat cheats with "their own anti-cheat"(supposedly all data is client side and there's a cheat engine out there that lets you edit values) and how long the community will last.

Been watching groups of people on youtube play this and it's convinced me to purchase it. Looks like it'll be good fun solo and with friends.

Did I read the indie thread wrong o_o

EDIT: Says PS4, but I search it up for PS4 on google, and nothing pops up. Sigh. Oh well, I guess.

Their Steam FAQ says they'll look into it if the PC version is a success which it might be due to the popularity among streamers and it's been on the Steam top sellers page for a couple days.

Watching some streams convinced me it was worth a purchase. Have a quick search on Twitch.

Did the same for someone above on this page, too.

I did bite the bullet and posted some impressions in the beta thread:

"My kids and I put about an hour or so into this today when I got home from work. Definitely fun! It was a lot more light-on-its-feet than I thought it would be! Quite brisk, in fact. I was imagining these huge areas where it might be ten minute stretches of just running and hiding with nothing happening but it isn't that way at all. Games, when I played, lasted maybe fifteen minutes tops."

In addition I've found it fun but it has some issues with bluetooth headphones where the sound cuts out in-game. I had the same issue in Doom, mind you. Also it stopped recognizing my wireless controller, which ALSO happened in Doom oddly enough.

I tweeted to the devs that they should include some visual cues in addition to the heartbeat for the killer's proximity as an aide to the hearing impaired. In reality I just like to chill with podcasts while I game but I figure LOTS of folks can benefit from a visual cue, Maybe a faint, pulsing red aura around the corners of the screen perhaps.

Apparently this game still has bugs from the "beta" (losing rank due to killer quitting/crashing, frequent disconnections, lobby issues, lag, etc.) so buyer beware. They've extended the 10% off sale to July 4th so it might be better to wait and see.

The Killer that can stealth makes it so much harder on the survivors. The other two are way easier to win on.

Picked this up just now after watching a few streams. Looks like fun.

Played a few rounds as victim, managed to escape on third round. Intense experience.

Yeah, intense is definitely the best word for it. I get a real sense of anxiety I haven't felt from any other PVP game in a long time. It's extremely satisfying to successfully escape from a killer chasing you down. I know it's only been out for a day, but I'm surprised at how bad most people are at repairing generators. I actually hate it when someone joins me on a repair because 90% of the time, they'll screw it up within 5 seconds.

As a new player I tend to get distracted while sitting there on the generator. Instead of focusing on the next skill check I'm panning my camera around like crazy so I can see It coming. On the last generator we needed, probably 5% left, missed two skill checks in a row. The other player on it was probably yelling at their screen, lol.

Yeah, I don't worry about watching my surroundings while repairing until I start hearing that heartbeat. Playing with headphones also seems to help. I should try playing as a killer sometime so I can really understand what their weaknesses are.

I managed to find some games around 12-2 AM, so that was nice. Not many, though, but I liked what I played. Never survived and never killed all survivors ;(. It's definitely a tense experience, which is incredibly unique in a MP game for me. Being chased is such a goddamn thrill, damn.

I've tried to convince some friends to buy it, but so far it's just me solo until they do.

Anyone making an OT?

The key to the skill checks is there is always an audio queue before it pops up. Once I figured that out I usually don't have many problems one-shotting the generators though it still does happen that I miss a check.

For a top seller on steam this seems to have next to no hype on gaf.

Was thinking about buying but reviews on steam say it takes awhile to find a complete match due to lobby jumping. There were more positive ones than negative though.

That stream was pretty great. Seems fun. There was finally a good match with a smart killer but Steam crapped out when the guy was the last Survivor.

My fear with this, just like the similar Friday the 13th game is how sizable the community will be. This game always needs people playing for it to work, and waiting 10+ minutes every time you want to find a game is rough.

As a huge horror fan of everything, this looks pretty awful to me. Janky as hell, not polished one bit. It's just twitch and youtube fodder, I hate to say that as it's a garbage term but I feel like that's the case here. Also the devs trying to push this out before the F13 game. Which could be awful too, who knows.

Kudos to the devs though, it's very hard to break into this industry like they did. Major props and I wish them luck. Hopefully they can continue to polish THE F outta this game and turn it into something people like me would enjoy, or put out an entirely new product. The premise is good, it's just not (I can't think of the word!) done correctly.

But obviously they've done something right, there are a lot of people enjoying it.

Surviving isn't hard. Its the Killer that should get the applause.

He doesn't just survive, though, does he? He would be in single-digit rank territory if it weren't for rage-quitting killers and Steam disconnects. You don't do that by merely surviving, gotta get 15k+ points on average for a round.

Also fine as the killer but doesn't play it much because survivors have quicker queue times. :)

How exactly is the game not done correctly? What we have here is far better than what we have see on the Friday the 13th game.
Unless I'm buggin this and the new Friday the 13th game are the exact same concept, no?
Yes, although they're executed a fair bit differently

Is this any good gaf? Steep learning curve or just go and play ?

I wouldn't say there's exactly a steep learning curve. Of course, it takes a little bit to figure out the strategies involved, but you can figure those out with enough practice.

As for general impressions, I put about 10 or so hours into the beta and 4 hours into launch version so far.

Pros:
+ Playing as the killer is great. Each killer type feels unique in their playstyle in how to effectively hunt down the survivors. For me personally, I feel I'm best at the trapper (likely because of the hours I put into beta), then hillbilly and then wraith.
+ Survivors are fun to play, but obviously is much more dependent on the people you're with.
+ Procedural maps certainly make each map feel fairly fresh. Over time you're going to start seeing how the set pieces fit together of course but it does help make each playthrough feel a bit more unique.
+ Great atmosphere to the game. Having the killer be in first person is a great move. You have less situational awareness than the survivors (which are in third person) which in turn makes the survivors more tense as they hide somewhere with the killer 3 feet away from them on the other side of a rock.
+ Huge props for them doing a good job on the environmental assets. Survivors can actually hide in the grass (and have the killer be like 1 foot away and not notice), you can lose the killer in corn fields and the fog is thick and does a good job hiding crouched survivors.
+ The offerings/perks can change the game in interesting ways. For example, in beta I had a perk which had the crows give a visual signal 25% of the time when a survivor walked nearby them.

Neutral:
= I wish each survivor was balanced differently slightly (movement speed, repair, heal times, skill check ranges, etc). As far as I can the only difference is cosmetic.
= Killers should have more options to do to the survivors than always hanging on a hook. I'd also like to see more variation in the primary weapons of the killers. Maybe a whip, throwing axe, etc.
= Survivors need more items to play with. Noise makers, flare guns, etc.

Cons:
- Video settings are crap. You need to use an INI file to unlock framerate from 30fps and disable vsync (necessary since I have a gsync monitor).
- P2P connections, so sometimes you end up with jerky movement/animations depending on connection quality between everyone.
- No party queue support (you can do private matches if you have 5 friends). They've said this is one of their top items to fix.
- Ranking system is overly harsh right now (as compared to overly easy in beta IMO). I'd imagine they are going to tweak this in one of the first updates.
- Matchmaking is iffy. Can take a while to get into a match as there are a lot of lobby hoppers (generally trying to get into a match with a friend). As the killer, it also takes 1-2 minutes before anyone joins your lobby (seems like there's some sort of lobby queue you go through because as soon as one survivor joins, you get tons of people joining and then leaving due to the lobby hoppers, etc).

Overall, I think the game itself is really fun. There's a certain psychological aspect to the game as you try to outsmart each other which I enjoy. There's lots of tension and decent amount of variation. However, it needs more polish. Video settings and party system are my top priority items for them to fix. Ranking needs to get a bit more attainable, or less harsh (you shouldn't be able to escape as a survivor and derank!). If you're looking for a fun horror-style competitive game, this is a great one as long as you're willing to put up with the issues I called out. I think it's perfectly fine for some people which may want to wait until the beginning of July when the discount ends to see how much the game has changed, and if they've been making changes based on community feedback. They have a strong foundation of a game, so it's going to be exciting where they take it!

Now, for some pro-tips:
- Use headphones! Do not listen to music while you're playing this game. Audio is easily the most important aspect when trying to hunt down survivors. When a survivor sprints, they do heavy breathing which is pretty noticeable if they're nearby. Also crows going off, grass/corn getting bent, walking on metal, vaulting and starting generators all make sounds. If you can pick up those sounds, it's pretty easy to triangulate them to investigate.
- As a survivor, don't always sprint! This ties into my previous tip. Not only do you leave a visible trail to the killer to follow, you also breathe heavily which is very noticeable. I've gotten so many survivors which sprinted away, I lost them, but could hear them breathing nearby. Always fun to pull a survivor out of a closet when they think they're being sneaky.
- As the trapper, be sure to use your traps obviously. Best places are inside/outside windows of buildings as survivors try to use those as juke spots frequently, as well as finding choke spots near generators. I personally think those who waste their time placing traps at the bottom of hooks are silly and not worth the time or the use of a trap.
- As the survivors, use the chance when a survivor gets captured to get generators. Ideally, if 1 survivor gets captured, there's going to be 1 nearby who can wait for an opportunity to get him off the hook. The other 2 should be going after a generator and if you fail skill checks on purpose, sometimes you can lure camping killers away so you can try to rescue the other. If you have an only camping killer, then just generators asap and you'll likely escape since the timer for a survivor dying from the hook is fairly long.
- With that said, don't be a lame camping killer. Sometimes it may be necessary when it's 2v1 and you know they're trying to attempt to rescue their buddy, but overall I hate the killers who just stay at a survivor until they die. If the survivors in the match are smart, they'll get generators during this time and you'll probably lose. Plus, it's more fun for everyone, and if they rescue a survivor, you now know roughly where half the team is.
- As the hillbilly, it's not always necessary to try to be stealthy! If you're in a more open map, do chainsaw sprints to patrol generators! When you do long distance sprints to a generator, survivors typically won't have a long time to react since they'll likely be waiting for the proximity heartbeat instead of the chainsaw sound if you're using the chainsaw constantly. The farm maps are so much better for the hillbilly than the forest maps.
- As the wraith, remember that even when cloaked, you are not completely invisible. Astute survivors will still see you since you refract light a bit. My recommendation would be to avoid lights and have wider patrols going along more of the edges so it's less likely survivors see you.
- In terms of spending bloodpoints, remember that bloodpoints are a common pool which can be spent on anyone. If you played a few rounds of a survivor, but want to rank up a killer, go for it.
- As the survivor, if you find the item box on the map, it's almost always worth a search since you can bring those items back to the campfire.
- If your buddy is injured, HEAL THEM! Injured players make a lot of noises.

It's not on consoles and it's a indie game and multiplayer only, so there ya go :p

Yeah, i just saw a cinemassacre video about it and after reading this thread i was wondering if there was a console release of it, i wanted to try it but i don't think my ancient PC would handle it well at all.
