I'm super stoked about the design since it's what I've wanted all along.

The price point for games is what scares me the most. I'm a handheld gamer, and I like the $40 price point. I haven't bought a $60 game since the N64.

Slick, but a complete waste of money for people who like home console gaming and couldn't give two shits about handheld gaming.

How is it any different than Wii U? The only added cost to this versus a normal console would be the screen, which Wii U had. If anything not having to have a wireless card for remote play (or whatever U used) would make this a bit cheaper than that solution, so what's the problem again?

Are Nintendo's games having trouble with it? I don't really think they give a fuck about anyone else's games.

No, because they don't do third party or next generation sized games. If you are right, they might fail miserable. They have to have third party support.

I think I read something about 70% of splatoon players using gyro. Even counting people who don't know they can turn it off I would classify 30% of players turning it off as "a lot".
But it's not the majority, which means that most people enjoy Splatoon's gyro controls.

Didn't think they would go Hybrid, same OS yes, but not a single console.

So...is it more powerful than the Wii U at least?

Just have a decent control scheme, no fucking god awful, unnecessary gimmicks and you have me intrigued.

At least there will be games on this thing.

After thinking about it some more, l think l'll reserve judgement until we see the first games. l want to get a better idea of this thing's graphical abilities but also of the kind of experiences Nintendo will offer on it. lf the games end up looking barely better than Wii U's if even that, l'll pass.

l'm also not sure why everybody calls it a "hybrid". To me it's a handheld, and it marks the end of Nintendo as a competitor on the home console market.

The Ugly: Say goodbye to competent ports of big games like COD:AW (48GB), with cartridges that only have 32GB capacity, not to mention the hit in visuals.

If there is a hit in visuals, the sizes will be smaller. I'm sure they won't be stuck with one small cart size. So basically:

32GB is the recommended cart size. 64 and 128GB carts will also likely be availiable. However using reduced textures should help make games smaller

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
60$ handheld games will be a tough sell.

In europe most first party WiiU games cost 40€...max 50€ - 3DS and WiiU first party releases cost more or less the same nowadays. I expect NX games to sell for 40-50€ as well...with some exceptions ala Zelda that will likely retail for 60€ as well.

As a fan of their handhelds I'm excited for this, As a console fan I'm kind of disappointed, and as a fan of Nintendo games I couldn't be happier. I let myself buy in to the rumors of the NX being an Xbox One level machine visually so to hear that it's using tegra is a bit of a disappointment. It's possible we still don't have all the pieces to the puzzle though and I'm sure that's already been discussed throughout this topic. I'm glad that this seemingly means that all of Nintendo's games will be on one device. We shouldn't really have to suffer through the same droughts we have before because their focus will always be on this one device.

I'll give you gyro controls, but I don't see how you couldn't do Quick Spawning and Inkstrikes with an on-screen overlay.

not really an elegant solution for something that didn't need one

in a game like this every second counts and a single input is quicker than multiple inputs

I'm thinking the detachable controllers could have configurable clickable touchpads like the Steam controller instead of d-pad and buttons. That would make them useful both in the handheld and in the dual controllers modes.

Not necessarily, especially for stuff like Quick Spawning & Inkstrikes. There's also gyro controls to consider, but that can easily be incorporated to a regular controller.

The screen in the dock can be still used like the Gamepad for Pikmin 3. You could still respawn or hit a inkstrike quickly using it in Splatoon.

Detachable controllers can still have gyro in them.

I hope they make a revision that removes the handheld functionality and is cheaper. I have no need for a screen and it would be permanently docked. I would never use the system as a handheld device.

I'd like to take a trip down memory lane.

Its not a hybrid.
Only the Kardashians know the specs.

There is no hybrid.
Actually we know. Handheld and console. No hybrid. ^^
It´s not a hybrid.
Nope.

a) because its a dumb thing to do. You get a shitty handheld and a shitty console.
b) Nintendo told us: "It´s not a hybrid", "Its multiple devices, maybe even more than 2, sharing software like iOS and android."

So no, it wont be a hybrid.

How will that work if it needs to be in the base station?

If they use the Wii U streaming technology, the controller would merely stream to the box, which would display on the screen. It wouldn't need to be docked at all.

No bald cap? Lies!
I think we were going to hit $60 handheld games with the graphical bump, anyway.

Just now it's less of a sting since they're $60 console games, too.

I would hope they would go for the middle ground of $50 and more importantly embrace variable pricing of games. They've already have variable prices for different titles on the 3DS and Wii U. Having a shared platform they should embrace this even further.

I dont' think there's reason at this point to believe 32GB would be some kind of hard cap. 64 won't cost much more, especially by next year.

There are plenty of reasons the types of games you're talking about probably won't come, having nothing to do with storage space. :(

That's true. Although it still makes me wonder what the average GB size for AAA games will be in 2018 and beyond, if games are already hitting 50GB?

If anything, I guess this eliminates the need of a high capacity HDD or SD card for memory if it uses carts (unless a consumer buys games from eshop, in which case hopefully the 512GB card goes down a few hundred dollars in price).

If there is a hit in visuals, the sizes will be smaller. I'm sure they won't be stuck with one small cart size. So basically:

Aaah, so cart size more than likely wont be a problem.

I think it's more likely that they make a revision that is Handheld-only and can't be docked and is cheaper.

WiiU streaming tech will hopefully be there for dual screen games.

Hmm that wasn't the impression I got from the article. It could work if the "dock" actually were more like a Chromecast and received the image directly from the controller, but one would think the article would have made that clear if so.

Is 1080p lagless streaming even possible though without the horrible artifacts the GamePad suffers from? What looks "okay" on the GamePad will look like garbage on a proper TV, even at the proper resolution

Pop up a map on the TV & move a cursor where you want it.

But... it's in the base station.

Unless the base station is another form of controller the screen won't be in your hand it'll be somewhere plugged underneath your TV. So they're going to implement dual screen gaming so you can look at a tiny second screen from 2-3m away?

So will the NX come with long-ass cables for power & HDMI?

Neoxon gets it.

720P would be god damn amazing for a handheld, but then what happens when its connected to the home unit, it then becomes a 1080P machine?

Sucks for people that only want a handheld. But it's going to happen.

worth noting is that Nintendo will likely continue to use different price points for different games. eshop only stuff like boxboy, budget physical games like captain toad and yoshi's woolly world, and then your full price games.

Can your phone be used exclusively as a home console?

Then no.

This thing will behave as a true home console when docked. It'll boot up via the controllers and will turn off via the controllers. It'll boot straight to its OS dedicated to gaming and navigate via the controllers.

Your phone doesn't do this.

I mean, we haven't had a dedicated gaming OS since the gamecube. The ps3/4, xb360/1 and wii/u all boot into media center type OSs that have apps, media capabilities, social networking and more in their OS. They boot into a HTPC type OS from which you can launch all those or games. In that way, they're in fact closer to smartphones than they are to dedicated gaming devices at this point.
