Vita "hacked," (PSP) homebrew on the way (not piracy)

I'm at work so I can't check this out myself right now, but, suppose I download ALL of the Vita stuff I own, then backup all of it in a PC.

If I don't update the thing anymore, like, keeping the WiFi off forever, would I need to connect again to transfer my games?

I could stay in that FW version forever if so.

Yeah you should be fine doing that I would think. I bet there will still be work-arounds anyway for downloading the latest Vita games.

That's a big thing for me because I really want to play God Eater 2, haha.

Likewise, there are still several Vita games on my list I'm looking forward to:

- Hyper Light Drifter
- Sale and Sanctuary
- Bloodstained Ritual of the Night
- Dungeon Punks
- Samurai Gunn

And I know there are others that I'm just not thinking of right now lol.

Interesting
Wonder if thisd allow me to play crash 1-3 and spyro using it

The developer isn't writing code for that. I think emulators will be the best thing that comes out of it unless/if others try to make that happen themselves.

It does not let you install or run Vita “backups”, warez, or any pirated content.

This is amazing news. I'm glad this is being released on current firmware and I saw it before Sony released an update. I would have inevitably updated and cursed myself forever. I've been dying for a portable emulation machine since I lost my PSP.

My main concern is for the future, when the website you have to access goes down. Hopefully an alternative is being worked on.

How do you add roms to Retroarch via the FTP server? I can't find a guide for this thing.

Remember, this thing hasn't been released yet, so we don't have a full tutorial of what to do lol.

I'm sure people are going to write detailed guides on everything soon especially with the beset homebrews to install.

So what are the chances that someone will port over a Dreamcast or PS2 emulator to the Vita now? Is the Vita even powerful enough to do PS2 emulation?

Ooh. Havent homebrewed since the PSP pre-3000 revision. This looks too good not to pass up. I'd love a GB emulator.
I just have to make sure I never turn the Vita off XD

From what I understand, it creates a 'shell' bubble on your VITA and you can run the installer from there, so once you downloaded it, you shouldn't need the website again.

How well do the current cores fare? I was excited for Retroarch on PSP and that didn't quite work out from what I've seen.

I have not personally tried it, because I thought Rejuvunate was too much of a pain to set up. But from other people on the Wololo forums, they had positive things to say, but it was still in its infancy of development.

It runs some PS2 ports fine, and some PS3-level games (with obvious concessions) well too.
It wouldn't be 100% accurate emulation, but I would expect it to be possible still.
Though if it doesn't run well, I don't know why anyone would want it.

There's no way in hell the Vita is powerful enough to run a PS2 emulator... A port is something completely different.

Nah, unless SONY makes it, I doubt the Vita has any shot at running a PS2 emulator. Otherwise we'd see something stable by now on Android which hasn't even been done yet.

Dreamcast, Nintendo DS, CPS-3, and n64 I could definitely see happening though.

I'm terrible with time zones, what's the ETA until it goes live?

And is a Internet connection required for all activations or just the first one?

Regardless, I'm super excited. I had botched an earlier upgrade and lost all my custom bubbles. Can't wait to see all the emulation possibilities with this.

What are the risks of getting your PSN account banned with this? I really, really don't want to lose all my PS3-PS4-Vita purchases just because I install Gitaroo Man (which I already own on UMD)...

No. There are some PSX games on the official PSX emulator that have slowdown on the Vita / PSTV.

For example Suikoden 1 and 2 spell effects have slow down for example.

If some PSX games have trouble running on the Vita, I doubt PS2 games will ever run on it.

Technically that's still running in PSP mode, a native Vita PSX emulator may have better performance.

I agree about PS2 emulation though, just considering that even direct PS2 ports push the system already.

I can't find the info...

What exactly will work on this new "hack"?

Emulators in general?
PSX backup games?
PSP backup games?

Those are based on the psp version though, so I'd expect a nativa vita version to work flawlessly if the psp version was able to run it near flawless.

PS2 is very unlikely though, ya. Dreamcast seems like it should be doable however. Would Gamecube be possible as well with its simple architecture?

It'd be great if we could get a Vita version of IR Shell officially ported over. That thing was a beast.

At the very least a custom Vita UI, the built-in one sucks!

Not sure I've understood properly.

If I update now, can I get access to PSP homebrew/ISOs on 3.60, in addition to this new hack?

I've not touched my Vita in a while, but I know it's on an older firmware where I can run the PSP games I own that aren't on PSN, although I didn't set it up properly yet.

Edit: I said "games" but it's really just OutRun 2006. Why on earth is that not on PSN..

There is no way to run non-homebrew in its current state. I'm sure people will patch in backups and piracy one way or another when it goes open-source. Or even before that, if the WebKit exploit is leaked.

Until it's released, we can't say anything for sure. Here's how I understand it:

The 3.60 update "fixed" (read: broke) the exploit that allowed us to run PSP ISOS with a loader like ARK or TNV.

What this hack does is, basically, grant you full access to the Vita's software, so you can install things as if they were official. It's a temporary exploit that you have to rerun when you turn off your console, like the non-permanent PSP exploits or the userland Wii U exploit we currently have.

From what I can gather, at the moment we'll only have a handful of homebrew emulators that have already been ported for this exploit. I don't know if the PSP ISO issue could be solved with this exploit. It could potentially be solved, and I sure hope so, because that's my main interest in this stuff. A proper and quality implementation of the PSX emulator would also be great.

But, as I said, at the moment we only have a handful of emulators. If you don't want to lose the ability to run PSP ISOs, don't update just yet. Wait a bit to see how it all develops. Otherwise, go ahead and update, since HENkaku only supports 3.60.

Edit: As a PSA before locking my Vita to 3.60, what games do you guys consider to be essential for the platform, so I can buy/download them ASAP? I'll be glad to hear your suggestions!

I already have:

MGS 2 and 3
Danganronpa 1 and 2
God of War Collection and GoS
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time
FFX/X-2 (also on PC and PS4)
FFT
Digimon Story CS
Gravity Rush
Rainbow Moon
Proteus
Soul Sacrifice
Freedom Wars
Dragon's Crown
Tearaway
Trails in the Sky (also on Steam)
Spelunky (also on Steam)
Woah, Dave! (also on PS4)
Knytt Underground
Guacamelee!
Terraria (also on everything)
Rogue Legacy (also on PC and PS4)
Suikoden 1 and 2 (I'm not interested in PSX games, since they mostly are in Spanish on the Spanish PSN)
Ratchet and Clank Trilogy
Persona 2, 3P and 4G

Wait a minute... Are you also excluding PSP and PS One games? Because you can double that list, easily.

There are other Vita games that might be must-have depending on your niche tastes. And there are games to come, too.

I consider Garou: Mark of the Wolves a must-own on any platform and it isn't out yet.
