MCV: Mario & Pokemon coming within 6 months of NX launch, 3rd parties, exec comment

You both make good points. Plus, there's always the possibility some nuance in his words is lost in translation. So, that's reassuring. Thank you.

I don't know that E3 is no longer relevant. They even leaned on the BotW showing at their last investor briefing. I think it's definitely less relevant than it used to be, though.

I agree, but at the same time they do need at least a few big titles at launch. They need to make a big splash.

Many Wii U games.

I agree, but based on comments Nintendo has made I expect a different title and different look when we next see 2D Mario. I guess it's now spent 3.5 years back on the shelf so we could be due for a new unveiling.
We know it has Zelda on launch. It will likely also launch with a big showcase new IP. Those and some quality smaller titles as well as stuff from third parties to flesh out the launch are what's needed. Pokemon and Mario are definitely titles to be saved for the months ahead.

My thought was that releasing Mario Maker meant that Nintendo was done with the side-scrolling Marios. Hopefully. We'll see.

At least with this current formula. They will do more Mario 2d in the future because they still sell millions. But not soon and with a different style, I hope.

Remember the NX was meant to launch this Christmas and was then delayed due to a lack of games. I'd be excited.

It was most likely delayed because of hardware reasons (tegra x2? or at least a custom chip based on tegra for pascal seems to be what current rumors go for.)

Emily Rogers saying it's not likely to be Mario Maker port, hype!
I don't honestly understand why you guys keep bringing up Mario Maker. It's a new Mario game like the article said. We haven't had a new 3D Mario game in 4 years (into 2017). Miyamoto has commented on 3D Mario in the past.

Mario Maker is a 2D platformer.

You know Mario Maker is a result of them working on their internal Mario level making tools. Why would they work on those if they never intend to design another 2D Mario game?

Who said they haven't already? MM was publicly revealed only 12 months after Luigi U came out. Besides, MM comes with levels built with Mario Maker, so..

Reminds me of Wii U's infamous 'launch window', where most of what didn't make day 1 seemed to get delayed.

My hopes: new 3D Mario has been in the works since 3D World, finally debuting for NX launch window. Pokemon NX Stadium, letting us import Sun/Moon stuff. Neither seems too unlikely.

this was expected but nice to hear nonetheless

can't wait to see the new mario. I believe miyamoto hinted at a new direction for the 3d mario series.

Going from NX's March release estimate, they'll likely be Christmas releases, so a year on from Sun and Moon. Either the third version of that/numbered sequels, or the Diamond and Pearl remakes, like how ORAS came a year after X and Y.

So, pessimistic view:

Zelda BotW downgrade edition
Pokemon S/M straight port
Mario Maker port
Sonic Project 17
Just Dance 2017
Injustice 2 late port
Skylander Imaginators late port
Dragon Quest X streming versions from 3DS
Dragon quest XI 3ds port

Optimistic view:

Zelda BotW upgrade edition
Pokemon "Rainbow"
Super Mario Galaxy 3
Sonic Project 17
Just dance 2017
Beyond good and evil 2
For Honor
Injustice 2 GotY edition with Pokken character ( :\ )
Skylander Imaginators Nintendo edition (all amiibo recognized in-game :\ )
Dragon quest X and XI PS4 versions

Edited with SE games

I think everything you said it exactly on point, but I do want to mention that per Wiki New Super Mario Bros. 2 is the fifth best-selling game for the Nintendo 3DS, selling 10.39 million copies worldwide as of June 30, 2016. So it did well. And NSMBU despite its bungled marketing/launch/presentation/timing did excellently relative to the Wii U install base. So I agree with your point, but I think there's a bit less fatigue for SMB even now, but I agree the right presentation is crucial.

Those sales still do fall short of what NSMB DS and Wii accomplished, though. Those games were monster system sellers that propelled their respective consoles into good graces. MW2 aside, Nintendo practically dominated the holiday of 2009 with the Wii because of NSMB Wii. Something like this didn't happen with NSMB2/U.

I agree with you. But 1-2 more midsize titles from Nintendo at or very soon after launch would probably be wise. Like with GCN or Wii.

I agree. I think it's a chicken and egg situation a bit but as you say they are system sellers. I do think the proximity of NSMBU to NSMB2 and the marketing around the game and Wii U in generally hindered its success. But you make good points and I don't disagree with anything you wrote. :)

I don't think we know if Miyamoto was referring to a 3D Mario or if the article was. I assume Miyamoto was but I don't think we have enough info to surmise what the MCV article referred to.

You forgot the most important game for both views, Dragon Quest XI. Pessimistic view for that would be 3ds port, optimistic would be ps4 port.

You mispelled "Super Mario 64-2", but all correct apart from that

Hope there's a new Monster Hunter game in the first year. Sure would boost sales in Japan. Wonder if it'll stay NX exclusive.

What was the last Konami game published on a Nintendo platform? I have almost no faith in Konami being on NX.

Well, they've published some Virtual Console games. The latest on Europe and the US were the TurboGrafx-16 games (Konami now owns Hudson games).

So technically they have published games on a Nintendo console not that long ago :D

You are totally right. sorry.
Don't know why I skipped SE in my list (and DQXI is one of my most anticipated games, either way!)

For the pessimistic view, I feel I should mention Warner makes all the LEGO games.

GameFreak makes Pokemon spinoff titles themselves frequently, so if we're getting a NX game out of them it's probably not a sun/moon port. "A Pokemon game" can be a lot of things.

But if they surprise us by having the first cross-gen Pokemon release or heck, even put out a 3rd version on the NX or something I'm not gonna complain.

I agree. Miyamoto never really specified. My opinion is their doing a new style of 2D Mario. The "New" series has been put to rest with Mario Maker. I want to see Nintendo do what they used to do with 2D Mario going from Super Mario Bros to SMB3 to SMW. All completely different artstyles, new mechanics and they're all great games. That's the core Nintendo to me unlike the "New" series which was meant for a more casual audience.

That was for 2D Mario and I consider Mario Maker as a 2D Mario game, which means it will only be 2 years between Mario Maker and next year. It will be 4 years for 3D Mario counting next year- leading me to believe 3D Mario is the next Mario game releasing.

Total lack of EA from the list of 3rd parties, but totally expected, unfortunately. I still wonder if Nintendo really plans to do nothing about sport games.

As I mentioned, it's not an exhaustive list since Bandai Namco/Koei Tecmo aren't on MCV's list and we know from Serkan Toto & Koei Tecmo's own financial statements that they are both supporting NX.

Nintendo will have three main blocks of time to work with from launch to the holiday season.

Launch to June (Launch window): They need big games here that will get people interested in the system, especially new games;

- Zelda
- New IP

July to September: They need a good amount of smaller titles to ensure there is no drought here.

- Pikmin
- Smash Port

Holiday Season (Holiday Push): They need the biggest sellers of the year here to consolidate the year and carry momentum into 2018

- 3D Mario
- Pokémon Eclipse

The two examples in each period above is what I'd consider examples of games that most naturally fall into the time lines that I outlined. Of course things don't usually work out that neatly but that's the sort of line up I'd expect, just with a larger volume.

A third version of Sun & Moon? Doubt it. Probably either a port of Go or a spinoff like XD.

Mario is definitely a New Super game.

In the actual article, maybe a typo or something, but has it been brought up they mention "A breakaway controller," not breakaway controllerS? They say the rumor is 100% true, but then there is that. So, which is it?

And as I commented already, most probably it's just the launch period list. Still EA missing at launch is important.
