FCC wireless chip filing makes me think Sony will announce new Vita hardware

lol gaf never disappoints. You think Sony would really be stupid enough to release anything new with the name Vita, that name is as much poison as the Wii brand

People are setting themselves up for disappointment. A new Wi-Fi chip is a new Wi-Fi chip. At most this is a Vita revision meant to complement Neo's 5GHz Wi-Fi.

I can't see it. There have been no rumors about this.

Also really poor thread title.

I might be imagining things, but the title originally mentioned the Wi-Fi chip. Did a mod change it?

I'd love that but rereading OP, I don't even see Vita anywhere. Couldn't this just be a new wireless adapter used by Neo ?
ODFM modulation is the same used by Cell phones and the coming ATSC 3. Sony is also going to support IoT with ODFM radios at what used to be TV frequencies and are now cell phone.

Sony Corp. agreed to buy Altair Semiconductor Ltd. for $212 million, acquiring technology to power the next generation of smart appliances as the firm looks for growth beyond chips for smartphone cameras.

Altair, with modem chips for fourth-generation cellular technology, will help the company make component devices featuring both sensing and communication capabilities, Sony said in a statement Tuesday. Altair, based in Hod Hasharon, Israel, makes chipsets that can connect security systems, power meters and cars to the Web with the deal due to close next month.
So same WiFi frequencies are being used with different modulations that are more robust. 4K video is going to need a more robust WiFI.

If anything, this new chip is likely headed for the updated PS4 revision confirmed to be at that September 7 meeting, which is dubbed the PlayStation Neo. Second rumor has a PS4 "Slim" at the same meeting and again with 4K media support.

Multiple ATSC 1 & 3 Vidipath tuners with WiFi are supposed to ship in 2017.
There will eventually be wireless VR glasses which also need a wifi radio

I find it interesting that Cable Labs produced the next two videos.
Youtube video of the near future from cable Labs
Youtube explanation of the technology which requires "near compute" or local processing/game engine.

Like I and others have pointed out upthread, OP should not have come up with their own codename and also should have presented this being a new Vita model as pure speculation.

But that article you linked overlooks the fact that those are applications for two different wireless modules. One of them fits the naming conventions for previous wireless modules in the PS4, the other is similar to previous Vita wireless module model numbers.

I don't think concluding that a 5GHz capable Vita model could be released is unreasonable, there's just no evidence that it will have other upgrades and/or will be announced at that Playstation event.

Not so.

Ok so to follow up my last post:

It looks like the source is linking this application to the Vita because of the similar module numbers. The application for the wireless module has number J20H091, which is similar to the Vita's wireless module nr. J20H056 (according to this post).

However, it looks like the PS4 has a similar WIFI-BT module number: J20H071, as seen in this pic.

So if the source's only lead is the similar numbers, then this rumor is already dead.

Has this been confirmed that NEO will have a new wireless card?

This. The source lists TWO wireless modules, one that very closely resembles the one in the PS4, and one that very closely resembles the one in the Vita, both adding 5ghz connectivity.

Not saying this rumor is true at all, but if these two chips really exist, it's a possibility that a new version of Vita is on the way and it won't be a cheaper version (like PSP Street) because 5ghz chips are an added cost onto the old model.

Edit: And if they really are releasing a new Vita hardware model, it'll probably be at TGS. But if I'm a betting man, it's nothing.

yeah at the very least these listings indicate 2 pieces of hardware

Whats being contended is whether this means a new vita or the rumored PS4 slim

Either way its clear that there is more than just the NEO to show

From the picture, this is the first radio for a STB in the home to support IoT appliances and more.

Wishful thinking.

Sony is done with portables. They'll keep the Vita alive in Japan, but I can't see a new platform.

In order to keep the Vita alive in Japan they could very well do a minor refresh like DS/DSi, 3DS/N3DS or PS4/Neo. It's not like Sony would invest millions to develop a new SoC, they already use off the shelf parts.

I went through the last few pages but, can someone explain how we made the connection fro "new wireless chip" to "Vita successor to be announced"?

Edit:
Mutliple chip filings so the assumption is Multiple devices/skus

Either Vita is getting a revision or PS4 Slim is real

Take your pick

Oooooh

Wiereless = portable = VITA obviously.

But...it doesn't? OP should cop a spank for this one.

Not really, they could be replacing modules in the same units going forward, or not doing anything at all. Huge leap from what I can see. Like Uncharted levels of gap stretching.

For reasons unknown (lol) it didn't even spread to the Italian site OP is associated with (according to his profile), but crisis averted regardless.

I think you're onto something. OP is trying to sabotage the Internet so their own site is the only one with credibility left.
How do you say "I'm onto your game" in Italian?
