Why the fuck was the online multiplayer logo even on the box if the developers knew there was no online multiplayer in the game?

I really don't understand this... did they really expect people not to find out the game doesn't have multiplayer?

For all we know, the man could be on vacation and doesn't want to get caught up in this discussion till he's back in the office. I can't believe this thread is still going on. People buying this game for the online feature alone is a joke as well. You cannot tell me you were on the fence and the mention of online and a "slim" chance of finding someone was enough to push you over and buy this game. It wouldn't have even been a big enough feature to see people on these plants playing to drastically change the dynamics of the game. Those of you bitching about this and not playing the game are truly missing out.
PC version is coming out tomorrow, bit difficult to play at the moment for some.

And I don't think he is on vacation in the week his games launches and is yet to come out on a platform. Come on now.

Also, I know it may seem crazy for some of us to not want to reward vague PR and unclear messaging, but it's where we stand.

I guess we can put "they're under NDA" on the chalkboard, but it will be pretty bitter for people when it turns out that's not the case.

Can't be the simple explanation that the devs were (intentionally or not) misleading. Must be some complicated theory that explains it all!

I've worked in media and entertainment for a good handful of years now and ive literally never heard of an NDA that says what you can and cant talk about after a game/product releases

If sony made an NDA that included langauge that kept sean murray from answering the reasonable questions people have, then this is a whole different level of fucked.

Hes not answering cause it will cost first week sales. there is no other explanation that actually makes sense in reality not the bubble some of you guys are living.

PC is being released tommorow so that might be when the NDA finally ends. If not, we have some serious things to consider

This thread is great.

Though actually I feel the comparison isn't quite apt -- Molyneux at least exaggerated about interesting things, and after the fact usually pretty up front about it. Murray [seemingly] lied about a somewhat boring feature he didn't really need to lie about, and has yet to own up to it [address it].

My money is on "Oh shit I thought we could patch it in before people noticed it wasn't possible." then doubling down on "maybe we can patch it in before it becomes a PR nightmare."

FTFY

And how the hell can you even make Molyneux [repeat offender] seem decent in comparison is beyond me, lol.

Yes, just because he downplayed the multiplayer focus means that he can obviously remove it / not make it clear that it's still in the game.

Yes we're allowed to be lied to. This is basically what I'm getting from you.

We are not trying to break him down. You just came in here to assume things.

All we're discussing is getting a clear and concise answer: "Is this feature still in the game? Yes or no?"

I don't see why you came in here other than your human nature, boredom and your mob mentality to not read the thread and drive-by with a comment.

It's not in the game. Period. Move on.

Or we can act like jaded spouses that were cheated on.

oh im sure they did. after theyve dropped 60 bucks on it.

selling an idea of a product is way easier than selling the actual product

What? I'm pretty sure exploring planets and galaxies online with others was like one of the biggest draws to the game for a lot of people since the reveal of this game.

Definitely some purposefully misdirection / lies on Hello Games part.

Hope the issue a statement on MP. Obviously it was never a seamless mmo. But they said it would have some kind of co op and never said it didn't.

If it was removed for various reasons and they just never bothered to tell the user base then that a Bit of a dick move.

I do think people love controversy, and love to break people down, especially when said people are popular. So, while he made many statements down playing the multiplayer focus and saying it's generally single player, we have people "freaking out". Because human nature, boredom, mob mentality. Carry on.

What, no. Its quite simple. People buy games on day 1 based on premise and advertising. If these is shady shit involved in this - that should be a no go - Simple.

Its like going to a showroom to buy a car and the guy can't tell you if you get a new or used car for the msrp.

If that's the case, then the developer lied and their honesty is at stake.

You even said he downplayed the multiplayer focus but in actuality, he was making empty promises. I don't see why you would support someone who makes empty promises even if it's one promise.

It would've been better if he cleared this up way before the game launched.

I can act as I please as we have been discussing in this thread what are the possibilities for the media silence and whether Sean is lying or not. I don't see why I should move on when this is a topic of discussion and sort of the point of the thread. If you had nothing to say, then there was no need for you to post your comment.

But hey, if Sean lying is no problem to you, that's it. Period. Move on. You don't wish to discuss with us in this thread.

No, they never saw each other.

If true this was 4700 posts of hilarity

SS or didn't happen

Update 3: 8/10/2016 12:42AM. Thank you to all the people who tuned in to my stream you really made my week! I was so nervous when I found another player I was barely able to function but we did it! Me and Psytokat beat the odds and found each other already! I will try again soon to see if we can try again when the servers are more stable. Stay tuned!

This update is what i got confused with.

Their wording is messed up there and ambigious.

They found each other in that they found the same system.

They never met each other or saw the other's avatar

Exactly, but this could be some bs NDA that exists that they are under to make sure sales do not drop and preorders are not cancelled.

Hey guys, it's OK. They weren't trying to lie, they were just making sure the truth didn't get out before they got $60 out of as many people as possible.

An NDA for not being to talk about game modes in a released game?

Exactly, but this was one of the excuses that was come up with.

I don't quite believe it since usually once the product is out there, the NDA is done. If this is not the case, Sean is keeping silent to keep the sales up.

thanks for the clarification.

Sean is part of the pantheon now

So where is this thread at? People still in denial and defending what clearly was a lie?

Yep, seems pretty much to be the case. edit: Wait, thecouncil may be using sarcasm... I honestly can't tell.

he didn't lie. stop saying that. Sean wouldn't do that.

it was a fib, at worst. but, most likely, just a misdirection.

I don't know how anyone can watch this video and conclude otherwise:

Then it would Sony's court as it would be their NDA

you realize that makes this like, if true....waaaay more fucked up right?

If it's not true, then Sean is doing everything intentionally. Keeping a media silence to generate more sales for himself.

I'm going to wait and see for an official response

My Limited Edition doesn't have a sticker over it, says "Online Play" and then underneath in parenthesis it says (optional)

One of two things can happen. You will see a patch which allows you to "see other people", or not. I'm willing to bet that patch would not be coming today, or tomorrow, or this month. It's clearly not hidden in it today. I'm simply trying to be realistic, the expectation has already been set.

Sean is not on vacation.

Sean said they were working on finishing up the PC version this week.

In fact, he said they were hoping to have it out by 2PM EST at the latest on Friday.

I can't find the article/interview where he said it though. I think it was a website interview from Monday or Tuesday.

EDIT: Here's a link:

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/heres-when-no-mans-sky-pc-version-launches/1100-6442458/

In a Reddit AMA, No Man's Sky director Sean Murray said his "best guess" is that it will come out at 11 AM PDT / 2 PM EDT / 6 PM GMT on August 12. This is not set in stone, however, Murray cautioned.

"We'll keep you up to date as we get closer," he said.

That's not set in stone either.

I was merely speculating on a possibility that it could be tied to whatever deal Hello Games has with Sony and their marketing deal for the PS4. After all, the only version currently released is the PS4 version. Seems all marketing and media has been the PS4 version only up to this point. It just didnt seem like much of a stretch to me that maybe there is language in the deal that does give Sony control until the PC version is released. If that doesnt happen in "reality" great, I will bow to your expertise on the matter.

That's because it only exists on here and the NMS subreddit. No one else actually cares.

I first brought this up in the NMS impressions thread at was quickly dismissed by a majority. Had to make a separate thread to see how newsworthy it really is. I think the people that care about this are the ones on the fence deciding whether or not they want to purchase this game. Those that bought the game and are playing either a) don't care since they didn't care about this part of the game anyways or b) are too hype-invested.

I've been following his discussion about the multiplayer mechanics since day 1, since that is a big deciding factor for me. When he said it wasn't multiplayer focused I got upset, but understood. When he said that we would still be able to find and see other players, it gave me just enough of a multiplayer hook to keep me interested. I think Sean knew he would do that to people like me, and that is why him and Hello Games continued to misrepresent the product they were going to deliver.

I'm flabbergasted this thread is still going. Reminds of the Dark Souls 2 graphics downgrade drama.
I don't understand why people can't let this shit go.
But that's how I feel, I let this sort of stuff go, probably means I'm a sucker

But doesn't that set off alarm bells in your head?

Sure, you may not have wanted or cared much about this feature. But some people did.

Take a look around reddit and some others in this thread, they were actually some who wanted this feature for the challenge. Because if the chance of meeting others is small, then why not take that challenge and show it can be done.

That was, as you say, that the expectation has already been set. And now, it's quite a predicament that we have yet to see anything that resembles what was stated in his countless interviews past.

This was a feature that was expected at launch. I know you're trying to be realistic but being realistic also means that the developer lied to us about a feature, albeit a minor feature, but still a feature.

This is because this is basically the only "multiplayer" component in the game of interacting with others.

He could just come out and say, "It's not in the game" but he's not. He's been on media silence. All it would take is one official clear statement instead of him being coy about the answer and everything would be relatively fine.

You don't get to Molyneux levels of reputation in one day. The entitiy Molyneux, formerly known as Peter Molyneux was decades in the making. It took years of hard work, lies, broken promises and deception.

People going overboard in their thirst for controversy.

Sorry, I didn't mean it wasn't important to people who were lied to and ended up buying it. I just meant that I think the game would have sold well without it / would have been able to function without that bit of false marketing. Like the idea of playing multiplayer in 2016 by itself is not mindblowing.

Whereas Molyneux's exaggerations tended to be more central to the gameplay, and at least engaged the imagination a bit more.

It's one of the bigger stories right now within the games media. IGN, Kotaku, youtube guys, etc. I even stumbled across German articles earlier without even looking for them.

Forgot about the PC release and is it then the PC crowd that's throwing this fit? You guys are going to mod the hell out of the game beyond what it originally is anyways, so this shouldn't be an issue still.

Let what go? No one answered anything.

Developer for the last 2 years: This game isn't really multiplayer but you will be able to see other players. No combat or anything, but you will be able to see each other. Heck, the only way you will know what you look like is when someone else sees you.

Consumer: We just played the game. Went to the same planet. We couldn't see each other. We tried for several hours. What gives?

Developer: *Crickets*

Until *Crickets* turns into SOMETHING, people won't stop talking about this.

As far as im aware, Peter always admitted that it couldn't be done right before release.
