To be fair the main point of contention though at this present time is the lies told and the principal behind it, I think all of this would be cleared up by Sean just coming out and being honest...

Which I fully expect will happen after the PC launch.

Tiny lies are always present in the industry, and this is a much a tiny lie (if it is at all, we'll see) as tiny lies can be.

See Uncharted 4 at 60fps, ok, at the end they stated that the game was going to be at 30 but still, there are always promises that aren't kept in the final release. And if this is actually a lie (I still think it's a very strong word) is a lie about something that the developers don't want to happen at all and don't want you to invest time in it. As much as they said that you could meet other people they also said that this is a single player experiencie and that you should focus on that.

If you go against that... well, it's expected to end up being dissapointed regardless the existence of the feature.

My two cents.

Don't care, I was told not to expect a multiplayer experience. I also don't feel "lied to", it's one small item that I can take or leave. It's not like he's my spouse or something, so my emotional attachment or vulnerability to being jaded is pretty much zero. I also don't want to see him get "burned" for this, he's been a nice dude the entire time, I assume they are working through things now, maybe it will be added later. It has nothing to do with the game at this point, it's about mob mentality wanting to break someone. I'll repeat what Sean has said before, "if you want a multiplayer experience, go play destiny". Some might say the constant toxicity/low attention span is representive of the stereotypical gamer, which I do not wish to promote.

So, I can totally understand why people are angry with the Sean Murray. I hope that if it turns out to be true that multiplayer (as he has described it, "seeing other players") is not present in the game, he gets whatever negative press he deserves.

However if this "multiplayer" is what had you hooked on the game, I'm not sure what kind of game you were expecting. NMS was never about joining your friends and exploring the galaxy together.

My opinion, for what it's worth

Well, there've been many warnings that this game was overhyped to high heaven, concerns about procedurally generated content etc. Many wouldn't listen and chose to continue imagining their own fantastic space game. The developers played around with these expectations, set many of them that now are not getting fulfilled and cultivated the misconceptions with intentionally vague information.

It's just this year's most prominent victim of videogame hype culture.

Inspiring.

I lost interest in the game a while ago as i realized it looked very bland and lacking depth, but other than that and no one being sure what the game involved, were there any specific complaints before release?

I stepped off my ship onto a new planet. I knew someone had been here because this planet already had a name.

It was a beautiful planet though. I spent hours there collecting and observing the wildlife.

As I sat there, just staring into nothing (or was it everything?), I thought I saw something off to the side of the screen, in the distance.

Was it another person? The first discoverer of this planet? A new friend?

I walked closer, hoping that I wouldn't scare them off. "I come in peace," I thought to myself with no way of informing them otherwise. The excitement was like nothing I've ever felt before.

But when I reached the spot, there was nothing. How had they got away? I was alone again.

Well, now I know they were never there because Sean is a liar. The planet's name was 'Duckshit', by the way. That's what this game is to me now.

Oh good god. I lost it at Duckshit. Please start a live-blog of this game.

The breathless, outraged tone of some of these posts is really something.

And you wonder how things like Gamergate get started. After awhile their anger just fuels more anger but people fail to step back and realize what they're arguing about really isn't that important.

really love this developing narrative that criticizing the communication of the features of this game basically leads to gamergate. it's extremely good shit.

As an aside, it seems counterintuitive to me to allow player-selected strings to show up in the first place in a game that aims to be atmospheric. Like, why would I want to play this and see a "Planet m1ndsl4y3r" or whatever? Same can be said of Souls.

I'm eating lunch imagining Bish standing over this thread, hammer raised high above his head as he constantly looks over to EviLore in anticipation. Waiting so desperately for that slight nod of the head that grants him power to unleash his wrath.

I think No Man's Sky is Sean trying to send us a message, him being coy on the details because at the centre of this universe layeth the meaning of life itself, the essence of our very beings.

Once we reach that place we will no longer need to "see" anything, that's the message with this game I believe, we don't need to "see" we don't need to be with others, isolation with the slight promise of communication which is swiftly taken away from us just as we think it's close because that is life, forever changing, forever suffering, 18 quintillion planets and not a single soul to see, we know people are there but we can't reach out to them and touch them...all we want is to be touched...

It's brilliant, he's a genius.

It's beautiful. He truly have ascended the space time continuum, for all of mankind.

I think it's unfair to call this unimportant. I think being able to see someone else would be not necessarily integral to the game but something that can do nothing but add to the experience.

The chance sighting after many hours spent playing would be something I think that would stand out in many players memories of the game.

Like that's ever going to happen.

The PC version is still 2 days away and the game is getting 50% scores with Mediocre reviews and there's all sorts of drama with not being able to actually see someone else in the game, not to mention people are meeting up with each other much sooner than Sean said we would.

I have gone from extreme hype for this game on Monday to possibly canceling my Pre-order and just waiting a few months to see if they patch it up with more features.

How could so much attention and hype have been given to a game that never really showed off much of anything except a math formula?

Sean was on late night TV shows for heaven's sakes!

Mojang didn't get on Late Night TV until AFTER Minecraft was already a hit game!

How did it come to this? Are we all just really desperate for a good space-exploration game that we're willing to let our guard down and accept mediocrity?

I am sad.

=(

Maybe you will have fun with the free game Space Engine (not really a game yet in the traditional sense, but it's also got procedural worlds, galaxies, all seamless and photorealistic) you can move around in it and explore (sadly no procedural life itself) It's awesome and I've used it for a long time now, really enjoyable in a different way. Fun to just find planets and explore them. Check out some pics in this post I made a while back.

You could argue that those two people meeting on twitch and working together has formed a deep bond, a true friendship from this entire experience, maybe that's the point?

Maybe Sean has made the ultimate cooperative experience?

Sure. Sean just needs to remember:

The twist is that the fabric of the reality is trapped on the center of the universe, and so the flux of the space continuum eternally broken, we are alone in the universe, every person is alone, but the first player to reach the center of the universe will fix the reality and so the multiplayer aspect of the game, and then the real game (an MMO) starts in that moment.

That's why Sean is being coy, he can't spoil the surprise, he can say there's multiplayer but at the same time he can't deny it, because is there.

Multiple times over the course of two years of development, Sean said things to the effect of "you can see other players." If that's not true, he lied. If development plans changed and they didn't implement it, they should say that. People in this thread have actually been really civil and I don't see people demanding the game be changed, but I do see people who want to know if a promised feature was pulled with the only notification being a vague tweet less than a full day before release.

That doesn't sound like "entitlement" to me.

What if it's just not working right now?

Maybe the player characters are so alien and removed from human likeness our brains cannot comprehend their shapes and thus are unable to perceive it.

Is anyone open to the idea that it's still planned but since it's launch day the servers are being hit pretty hard?

Not really. If it's still planned, why can't they just come out and say it instead of avoiding answering the question? Also if it's planned, what do servers being hit hard have to do with it.

Yeah, maybe they're invisible.

Holy crap I think you are on to something. I mean he did say in that interview "Your player looks like nothing else in the game."

"Looks like nothing else in the game"

"Looks like nothing else"

"Looks like nothing..."

Mystery solved.

NO!!! Because he LIED TO US!!!!!!111!!1 Where's the pitch forks?

Don't be a jerk. People are definitely open to the idea, we just aren't getting any confirmation from the actual devs.

I don't see how some of you can be spinning this as a positive for the game.

How did it come to this? Are we all just really desperate for a good space-exploration game that we're willing to let our guard down and accept mediocrity?

Possibly, yeah. I like exploring in Elite Dangerous but it’s exploration mechanics are fairly meek. NMS does look to be a decent space exploration game, irregardless of whether or not it has multiplayer. It would of course be a hell of a lot more fun with multiplayer, but it looks like this is not the game for that kind of experience. Ironically enough, Elite’s multiplayer has worked pretty awesomely for exploration meetups and has been a lot of fun, especially on the planet surfaces.

But there aren’t many space exploration games, there just aren’t.
