At this point I'm convinced that a re-release of the 50s version of Ben-Hur would make more money than this one.

man i really like toby kebell so it's a damn shame he keeps appearing in these shit flops. now add to that jack huston who is prolly one of the best actors i've seen on TV in the last 10 years as the lead in this piece of crap and it's just....whew.

careers cut short before they can even take off :(

hopefully they do re-release Ben-Hur in theaters prior to this remake. I would be down to check it out on the big screen for sure. the bluray looks incredible.

You would think that TCM would have tried to run it for a week like they have been with other films in the past couple of years, but their classic pick this month is Animal House.

That's OK, though, since next month is Dr. Strangelove and October has The Shining, so I'm more than happy with them right now.

Could you imagine if Margot and Will weren't in that movie

Now that would be true basura

forreal. funny how so many dumb nerds were shitting on will smith's inclusion in here when he was by far the best part of it (could make a case for viola davis too but she's not in it as much). and margot in that club scene. oh my god, what dreams are made of breh.

i don't have that channel but technically isn't every day a "classic pick"? lol. it's TCM. they only play old movies right.

edit: never mind, they play it all week huh. yeah weird timing on their part to put on Animal House instead

It's a Will Smith-type role, but outside of After Earth, I don't recall him ever having a truly terrible performance, and After Earth is justified since M. Night Shyamalan has the uncanny ability to suck the charisma out of even the most amazing of actors.

One of the trades ran an article saying that Ben Hur was tracking for a $13-14M opening.

It might end up behind both Kubo and War Dogs next weekend. After next weekend we hit the real dry spell. Don't breath might be the only film with the potential to crack $10M OW until Sept 9th. With a few minor under performances, we might not get a $20M+ opener again until The Magnificent Seven on Sept 23rd.

People bitch about Will but it needed a fucking lead and he did just fine

Margot's interesting to me, because she's a stunner and could just coast on that shit forever but she clearly puts in the work for her roles. Harley was good.

We'd still have Captain Boomerang.

I loved that fucker but he wouldn't have saved it

Oh yeah, I forgot the idiocy that is the summer season starting in fucking April.

In the US, Civil War was a May movie. First weekend of May has been the start of Summer since Spider-Man 1. Prior to the 2000s, it was Memorial Day weekend, but then studios started going crazy with their $100M+ blockbuster release schedule.

And now with Deadpool and even BvS I would not be surprised if it gets pushed up even more.

Actually, I'm talking about their partnership with Fathom Events to get these films in movie theaters. I saw The Planet of the Apes last month and it was awesome.

As Suicide Squad shows, there are still benefits to releasing your film when most people under 21 are off of school, lightly employed, and have more spare time than they know what to do with. Even front-loaded films get a solid first set of weekdays before people start losing interest. Suicide Squad might end up with a similar second weekend to BvS, but it will easily avoid the sub 2x OW multiplier fate.

That said, I think studios are finally cluing into the fact that picking a different month is better than cramming 3-4 mid-level releases into every week of June and July so that they all suffocate each other.

Cineplex was doing this in Ontario a few years back. I don't know if they are still doing it. I got to see Casablanca for the first time on the big screen, instead of on a random AMC showing.

Don't forget Winter Soldier last year.

That was 2014. But Furious 7 did the same thing on an even larger scale last year.

If you look at next year's schedule , it's pretty clear that the studios have decided to make March/Spring Break season a new dumping ground. I don't expect the rest of April to make it through the decade before we see notable films scheduled every week.

I can't wait till one day when someone gets brave and releases a hit blockbuster film in September and it makes bank. That'll really shake things up!

Since we're talking about Furious 7, let's talk about how it beat Ultron and BvS and all your goddamn comic book movies

Family wins over all

eventually they'll just release big movies every month, a never ending summer

Then we can hear people bitching about being so sick of comic book films as they continue to dutifully attend all of them each and every month.

Thanks to Universal's Chinese overlords. I still have no idea why that of all films made close to $400M there. Fast and Furious 6 made $60M.

Update (Fri)*- Sausages to sauceoff 34M wk, Pete's dragon 22M, Skwad racks in estimated 13M Fri 45-50M wk as anti-DC machine in full flow. *wait for actuals!

Legit one of life's great mysteries. I don't even think they did any Chinese stunt casting or any of that. If I didn't know better I'd say it was all Monopoly money

But Furious 7 is a comic book movie.

Comic book movies wish they had the balls to have their early-movie set piece be jumping a 3 million dollar car through 3 skyscrapers in a row

"Thing about street fights? The streets always win"

Someone got paid to write that AND say it

Didn't people speculate that F7 did so well in China because Paul Walker was a handsome white guy who died? Could that be why they hired Scott Eastwood?

I'm not insinuating that they're going to kill Scott Eastwood.

Also, Fast & Furious X Mission: Impossible when?

Not only that, VIN THEN PROCEEDED TO STOMP THE YARD

The big climatic end to their fight is him doing a slamdance move

Does China dig white people?

Dunkirk looks fucking wack but I should catch up on Apes probably

He wasn't even bad in After Earth (and was in it a lot less than the trailers made it seem), it's just that everything else about that movie was trash.

Deadline Saturday AM update

Based off updated industry figures this morning, The Warner Bros/DC pic is headed toward a -67% second weekend drop that’s quite close to Batman v. Superman,‘s -69% free fall. That was one of the worst second frame declines for a superhero movie tying with 20th Century Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. For a second last night, it looked like Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy would hold the record for best second weekend in August with $42.1M, however, Suicide Squad looks like it’s headed toward a $44.4M weekend. Many reports show the film spiking today in ticket sales.
