New Overwatch update filters "gg ez" into different, hilarious phrases

If we lose because the other team was better, I always say "gg". If we lose because our own team were a bunch of total dumbfucks, I might say "good job team..." in match chat. If the match ended with our Hanzo standing outside the point instead of contesting it, I spam "Thanks Hanzo!!!!". Yes, I get salty too. :(

Lol, there are people who are upset they'll have to actually use something creative to talk smack after a match now.

If you really can't come up with anything original you deserve to have it filtered.

I'm not a PC player so I never see these messages but what's wrong with it? I'm assuming gg ez means something like "Good game, easy" or something like that. I don't see how I'd be terribly offended by someone saying good game to me and that it was an easy win. Okay perhaps the easy part may be considered a little harsh if you had a close game, but if the other person wins and says it was easy for them then I don't really see what the big deal is. I've definitely heard worse stuff online. This definitely does not seem like something worth filtering, especially with ban messages. If they had to they should probably filter out the cuss words.

Or perhaps I'm missing something else entirely?

I've always found "GG EZ" among the most gentle forms of smack talk and think it's funny how upset some people get because of it.

However I also love creative "censoring" of smack talk where all kinds of hilarious scentences get made. I think these are a bit too long but whatever. I'm looking forward to seeing them in matches.

I need this technology for neogaf. It could replace "should of" with "should've" and "this makes me cringe" with "i dislike this because it's unusual and clashes with my sensibilities".

So, GG 2ez is still fine? :p

Don't remember which game did something similar, I know steam had a profanity filter where it was replaced with <3. I'm sure there was another game but don't remember.

Find it a funny approach, I see people just bypassing the filter and typing other rude shit.

When does the update come out? I was gonna say I could've sworn I've seen plenty of GG EZ earlier. Anyway, whether or not my teams get stomped I just stick to GG unless something supremely dumb happens (had an all Genji game that we lost but was super fun today).

"GG EZ" is the laziest form of trash talk. That's all it is. The culture on PC communities is such that people can't resist trash talking especially when they have no business being that way. If it was an actual curbstomp, there's usually a ton of creative and specific things you can trash talk about. "What were you guys thinking?", "Thanks for the free win", "Lol, what was with that team comp?", etc. There's no need to say "gg ez" because that goes without saying. It's always the close games where you made the other team work for the win, and if they're not sporting players, they want to feel better about themselves and they'll go "gg ez" because the only other thing they can say is probably "well fought" or acknowledging the other team being a worthy opponent. If they can't bring themselves to say that, it's "gg ez". It's stupid, it's boring, and if this makes it funnier, it's a win for everyone.

I tend to type in a "ez game ez life" if I win a game against players who are taking the game waaay too seriously, or when we scrape a victory off of them after getting shit on for most of the game.

Not proud of it. But when you win a game by the skin of your teeth against a lamer...

That being said these are hilarious.

Wow, I never thought people would really get mad with "gg ez". You guys gotta get some balls.

And I feel like at this point (at least in CS and DOTA) most of time people (like me) use this phrase ironically. Your team got destroyed? You fucked up in a fight? Type in all chat "gg ez".

Especially love when a game is 3-0 and the opposing team says GG. Cause of course they would, they won.

I say gg when I lose.

I always say gg after a match, win or lose, unless the enemy team was a man down. To me, gg is the equivalent of shaking hands after a game - just the polite, sportsmanly thing to do.

This is just sad.

I still don't know if the kids are the ones writing "gg ez" or the ones getting butthurt from it..

I play League & in 98% of games, there will be always at least one player to write gg ez, gg izi, etc. That shit aggravates me so much to the point that NOW I write it too when I see stupid hate/flame retardation during all the match. So yeah, I guess it's both sides

it isn't ballsy to spout may mays in a video game

it's just really annoying

I want to be a sporting and nice person all the time, but when your own team sabotages any chance of victory and are basically a bunch of fuckups, it's hard! :(

These are my favorite threads; posters falling over themselves to say "what babies" or "get thicker skin" or "grow some balls." It ain't that someone saying "gg ez" is making me lose sleep. It's that it's a lazy, obnoxious thing to do when you've already had (presumably) more fun during a match, because you won.

Blizzard has done a lot to reduce possible toxicity in Overwatch (lack of traditional scoreboards, elimination of potential "kill-stealing," etc.), so anything they do along those lines is welcomed by me.

Now if only they can somehow filter the chat so you don't have to see people complaining about their teammates when they lose.

Good. I always called this out when it happened on our team. Not so much on the opposing team, but when I know we just barely won the game thanks to overtime then it wasn't an easy win. It would have been a gg, but not ez, get over yourself stupid team mate that struggled more than me.

We already have profanity filters in basically every multiplayer game. Disallowing trashtalk is not censorship.

Yeah I had a game once where we lost on Defense in Overtime after a really hard fight. They powered through at the end, we just couldn't quite hold, and lost. As usual one of the worst players on the winning team was the first to go "GG EZ!!!!" and then I went "If it was so ez why did you have to win in Overtime, lol." and then he started escalating the shit talk while the rest of his team was telling him to shut up. In the while we were waiting to start on Attack, the guy pulled a your mom insults on a friend of mine before quitting the match. Hilarious. We proceeded to destroy them on Attack. But with the shittalker gone, everything was polite after that. Felt bad for them having to play with assholes like that on their team.

I think if you really want to trash talk someone, get creative.

Like for Overwatch. say to them "Maybe you should give Battleborn a try instead?"

There are people who are offended by "gg ez"? I always thought of it as a joke and never took it seriously. It's just a little taunt. I guess growing up with Unreal Tournament has made me immune to the little things :)

EZ means they spent no effort in beating you.

Which makes people get pissed.

My response to ggez was always "like your mom/sister"

Can they do something about console players spamming "Thanks. Thanks. Thanks." Every time they lose. My friend does this all the time and it pisses me off.

My favorite is when the game is tied KOTH and the last match sits in overtime with both teams at 99% and someone on the winning team goes "gg ez". Like how was that "ez"? We were as tied and evenly matched as possible in the game.

I think it's more like the 4chan word filters where they took something that was massively over used and changed it to something idiotic to get people to stop posting the same cliche crap.

There are tons of other insults that aren't filtered. People will just have to be a little more creative when taunting other players.

You sound like you might be a part of the problem. So you almost lose then talk trash because you scraped by and won? I don't get this type of behavior.

That's actually a pretty good reason. Variety in taunting is something I always enjoyed. Some of the stuff that people come up with when playing League is incredible.

What does gg ez mean?

I'm so far from what the kids are doing these days.

Good Game, Easy though

GG is generally used on good terms then EZ turns it to and insult on the other team meaning there was little or no effort involved.

I think its a weird thing for players to get annoyed about, I've had many friends in LoL, Overwatch, CS etc that lose it when someone says ez o_O

I'm all for Blizzard changing it though to make for a nicer online experience for some and hopefully it will rub off on players in the long term. It should be something that can be enabled/disabled though for players looking for the real gritty true online experience.

That's the whole point...

You call "gg ez" after a nail biter, "gg close match" after you completely crush them.

GG EZ is like the gnat of insults. Like it technically counts as an insult but is so ineffectual it may as well not even register. Also what's all this talk of "lazy" insults? You want something more elaborate to be insulted by? There's plenty of homophobic, racist, cuck variations to go around thank you very much, unless you want someone to breakdown personal innerworkings through how you played and develop some sort of targeted insult through those means, but that's probably not gonna happen.

Edit: Also D.Va has a voice lines LITERALLY saying easy mode, so yeah.

GG is good game.
Ez is easy.

By saying ggez you're easily dismissing all the close hard efforts that your enemy have put in. It's very unsporting like and to say that after a very barely win is more douche.

The best thing to do against people you know are toxic is to smother in kindness. I don't say that to be cheesy, it really does work. The results are almost always one of two things: a.) they lighten up and cut their poor attitudes, or b.) they get so mad at you and it's funny in an admittedly mean way. Because they're trying so hard to be big and tough, throwing insults and vulgarities, spewing toxicity... and they're doing it towards messages like, "We can do this!" and, "Very well done, -insert person who just did something good here- :)"

It's the funniest stuff.

Bonus, if you do it long enough in a match it can really improve your own mood as well. It's easy to get caught up in your positive persona and have it actually effect you. Or maybe this bit is just a personal thing.
