Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I realize this is the first in-game Fire/Dragon too---all we have is Mega Charizard X and Reshiram, sure you can technically use them in-game but that's pretty cheap. I like when Type combinations formerly held by Legendaries/Megas are given to regular Pokemon since those are the ones I use the most.

Seems to be based on soft shelled turtles, and they are fuglier than that pokemon.

What the fuck is this?? Wow, the laws of nature... is such a fucking amateur lol. There's not supposed to be ugly animals, anywhere, ever, lol. It's unjustifiable and I don't like it. Way to go nature, your designs are trash. Nature must be all out of ideas lol. I wish we could go back to the neolithic era when everything was beautiful all the time

Jesus... They ran out of ideas?

Every time someone says that particular phrase in regard to a new Pokemon I'm sitting there thinking "god what an idiot". And someone steps up to say it every single time a new Pokemon is shown.
Since like Gen 3.
Amazing that these guys have been able to create like 500 extremely varied Pokemon since then despite 'having run out of ideas', right? Or maybe it's just that you don't know or care or care to know about the design inspirations and intricacies of any given monster that doesn't immediately appeal to you, and would rather just assume that it's pure nonsense. Why can't dudes just say "I don't like thing" and maybe go the extra mile and talk about what part of "thing" doesn't appeal to them... instead of making posts worthy of ridicule like yours

I don't know why you guys are posting those beautiful turtle pics. Their resemblance to the new pokemon is pretty vague tbh, which just looks like a badly designed fire kappa.

This looks fierce as fuck
This one seems like it wants to sell you drugs

When it comes to evaluating Pokemon designs, my primary criteria is whether it adds an interesting new wrinkle to the overall pantheon. And Turtonator meets that criteria well.

It has a unique look that borrows from mata mata turtles (the shell, neck and head), softshell turtles (the snout), kappas and Gamera. Only one other Pokemon stands with its back to its opponent (Mawile). It's also the only Fire/Dragon who is neither a legendary nor a mega evolution. It's also uniquely ugly — in a good way. In a generation with many softer, more rounded designs, Turtonator stands out with a sharp serrated shell, jagged spines, etc.

I really like the bit of spice he adds to the lineup with his visual design. Even his personality stands out a bit, with the world-weary eyes and no-bull attitude. And the concept is awesome — a "turtle detonator" with a sulfur-coated shell rigged to explode.

Agreeeeee

Gen VII stays looking terrific

There's really just no case to be made for the idea that Pokemon designs have gone off the rails.

I'm sure it's a frustrating sentiment, seeing fans new and old liking things that don't tickle nostalgia, but there's just no arguing with any coherent reason that "my design I like is better than yours because I don't like that one."

No amount of Gen I comparisons are necessary, just look at how consistent the creators of the series are at designing these things.

Actually, if you want to know a reason the series is still successful, it's exactly because the monsters continue to be so carefully and consistently well-designed (plus some nostalgia pandering).

Of course not liking specific designs is to be expected, but the bottom line is the designs are as good as they've ever been (and I believe better).

Man, what a BAMF. Probably my favorite of the new Pokemon shown so far. Always glad to have another member of my turtle-themed Pokemon team.

I feel that its design also has a strong "cartoon explosion" motif going on (the kind used when censoring the shit out of things), with the chest marking, head, and shell all looking similar to those, complete with a mouth that looks a bit like a gun and a classy 'stache.

I think it's a really cool design. It also has pretty good typing IMO.

I feel most of the new designs (including XY) are designed differently in order to make better/easier 3D models. I dislike how tortunator is just straight lines and sharp edges.

No crisis though

Good observation. Your point is backed up by the screenshot in the OP -- the in-game explosion caused by Shell Trap matches the eight-point red/yellow pattern on the shell and helmet!
