It's a shame the 45 to 22nm PS3 cell chip shrink did not lead to any products such as a cheap PS3 revision.

I don't think Neo is allow to have improve AI or physics that influence gameplay, parity rules.

Yeah, you don't want to upset 40.43 million players, just because the few new guys who bought the new thing have extra power. It'll be just better resolution/fps and some extra features aside from gaming, like (possibly) 4K movies playback.

If Neo is designed as I expect it to be they can emulate the Cell with the PS4 APU & emulate the RSX with the new GPU.
I don't think so. fewer than 8 Zen @ 4 Ghz maybe.

Why would they do it though. In the big picture, Sony said the 2013 PS4 would be equal to Mid level PCs for the next three years (2013 -2016). NEO is keeping the PS4 current with mid level PCs for three years (2016-2019). 2019 is when the next PS4 iteration launches (from efficientgaming.eu). See the pattern. It's in AMD and Sony's interest, to keep developers happy, to produce games on the Consoles that are easily portable to PCs.

The question is where does the PS4 Slim fit? Casual games and I think Media which is going to need UHD capable and WiFi n-AC.

I repeat, including UHD blu-ray in 2016 and later consoles only costs pennies more than not including it. WiFi N-AC is the only addition we know of to the PS4 Slim and the APU @ 14nm is half the size of the APU at 28nm and should roughly cost half and with reduced power and weight we have "Slim" pricing. NEO is roughly twice as large as the Slim or equal in size to the 28nm APU in the launch PS4 so the cost for the APU and price for the console should be similar to the launch PS4. This is the basis for the articles pricing the PS4 Slim and NEO.

Or a feature inside not related to the power of the APU?

Ehh I suppose but what would you need built inside the box thats an added feature? The only one I could see would be PS3 backwards compatibility so in essence PS3 chips but I don't see that happening at all.

If its that thick I'm pretty sure its for cooling reasons

Almost 90% sure that we're going to see God of War there, and maybe even get a release date for Spring 2017. It was already rumored to be Neo's flagship title, and makes sense for it to release soon after.

The release date will be Holiday 2017 then get delayed to 2018

You don't think a ~ 2TF PS4 APU would be able to emulate the ~ 200 GF Cell?

It's not only matter of processing power. Cell had six extremely fast coprocessors, and data bandwith between them and core Power cores was immense [over 200gb/s].

Sell my PS4 now and get a decent value from Gamestop or wait and gamble it out? Fuck.

You can get 150 at Amazon today and they pay to ship it and you have 7 days to ship so you can wait til after the conference and decide. Lock in a price now with them.

Isn't gamestop offering like 120?

There is like no chance Neo is coming out this coming week, could be a month, two, six. Could be a long time without a console.

Can extra floppies help improve physics/AI?

Definitely if the developers choose to implement them, IIRC I saw a demo which showcased hundreds of AI running on a GPU but I can't seem to find it.

We could get some cool stuff like implementations similar to what's seen in PC games that utilize GPU accelerated PhysX!

PlanetSide 2 PhysX Trailer - This got removed from the game, I can't remember why though.
Borderlands 2 GeForce GTX PhysX Trailer
Assassin's Creed® IV Black Flag™ PhysX Update
Warframe PhysX Trailer

Batman: Arkham Knight NVIDIA GameWorks Video
Batman: Arkham Knight NVIDIA GameWorks Batmobile Video

I don't think Neo is allow to have improve AI or physics that influence gameplay, parity rules.

PhysX doesn't really affect the gameplay though, additional physics effects it could be seen as a visual improvement for games.

I agree the obvious would be for better (quieter?) cooling or more flippty flops but I put that out there because a dev here hinted of a feature in the box we don't know about.

Microcode ladies & gentlemen microcode!

The SPEs are vector units & the CU are vector units so if they use microcode to reconfig the CUs to look like SPEs the software would never know it's not actually running on a PS3.

I know what microcode is.
Ladies and gentlemen, all emulation problems are solved, we were all too dumb in the end.
I mean, tech doesn't work by buzzwords but on what it actually is. You can call both cell and a GPU same but they aren't. They have similar approaches but are really different.

Depends on the actual code and the used algorithms but I would say yes more than no.
Then again we have to wonder if devs want to invest in gpgpu or just use the higher clock of the CPU.

This is what I wanted to see. Thank you!

Oh man. I hope at least some devs use the extra power of Neo for GPU-based physics effects. Keep it 1080p30 but have hecka debris and maybe some small scale fluid simulations. I will buy two copies.

Could you give us your opinion of what the specs of Neo will be come Wednesday?

Just seems to be a waste of your own time to come up with unlikely possibilities just because they are technically possible.

?

Informed speculation is fun and requires a bit of self education.

Baked in PS+. Err what? Why would he even put that on twitter to embarrass himself?

The way they explained it was weird and confused alot of people.
We should try and find the leak to clarify the situation. Some read it as September onwards and some read it as October onwards.

Why does a few people keep saying October. I thought the original leak here on GAF said from September onwards? Which would mean there are already Neo mode games ready to go.

I think (if I'm not mistaken) that physical games released in Sept would need a Neo patch through PSN, while games in Oct onwards would need a Neo version on the disc.

time to take my meds
forever edition lol.

anyways.... whos making the OT for the meeting?

i vote gofreak. one of the few who will be realistic about expectations and not allow the hype train get the best of us.

I thought October was the date for Neo mode to be included in the core game code, September for Neo mode in a patch.

I could be wrong, though.

I'm hoping these 'parity' rules are just a way to not piss off current PS4 owners and we'll see parity loosely applied.
Once Neo is actually revealed.

Sony should mandate GPGPU use for physics and stuff like that. JC3 should have never been released in the market in a state like that.
